New York Times/Politico/Wall Street Journal: Trump Says He Has Ordered Troops to Protect ICE Facilities in Portland
The
New York Times [9/27/2025 7:15 PM, Luke Broadwater, Anna Griffin, and Hamed Aleaziz, 153395K] reports President Trump declared on Saturday that he had directed troops to be sent to Portland, Ore., saying he had authorized them to use “full force” to quell protests directed at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities. The order was the latest instance of Mr. Trump’s use of the American military on the nation’s streets, after federal troops were sent to Washington last month in an effort to crack down on crime. Federal agents will begin arriving in Memphis as early as next week, after the president authorized the use of the National Guard there as part of a similar crackdown. Like Mr. Trump’s other dispatches of federal forces, the Portland directive was quickly opposed by state and local officials, who called it unnecessary. Gov. Tina Kotek, a Democrat, said in an afternoon news briefing that she had spoken with the president and Kristi Noem, the homeland security secretary, on Saturday, and that she had told them to stay out. She did not plan to approve the use of the state’s National Guard, she added. Tricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security, said in a statement that “President Trump and Secretary Noem are taking action to restore law and order following weeks of violent riots at ICE facilities, assaults on law enforcement and the terrorist attack at our ICE facility in Dallas.”
Politico [9/27/2025 6:04 PM, Gregory Svirnovskiy, Paul McLeary and Irie Sentner, 14810K] reports President Donald Trump is directing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to send U.S. troops to Portland, he said Saturday on Truth Social, making the extraordinary pronouncement that he is greenlighting the use of “Full Force, if necessary” in an American city. “At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists,” he wrote. Further details about the president’s actions were not immediately clear — including what legal authority the president would rely on to authorize “full force” of the military in Oregon. A federal law, the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, generally bars the president from using federal troops to enforce domestic law. The order came as a surprise to many in the Pentagon, and several officials were unsure what the orders will actually entail. One official, who was granted anonymity to discuss the order candidly, said they expect it to be a National Guard mission that would look similar to Los Angeles and Washington, which was focused on “supporting federal and local law enforcement,” by doing logistics and and not much more. The official was unclear on what the president’s claim that “full force” was authorized meant. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek said at a Saturday afternoon press conference that she spoke with Trump and Noem in separate calls in the morning, where she reiterated her view that Portland is not in need of federal intervention. Kotek said she had no advance communication with the White House, and got official word on Trump’s plans only when he posted them on Truth Social. “Portland is doing just fine,” she told reporters. “And I made that very clear to the president this morning. Our city is a far cry from the war-ravaged community that he has posted about on social media. And I conveyed that directly to him. That we got this, we are good, we are doing fine.” Kotek also told reporters she wouldn’t approve any authorization of the Guard. “There is no mission for them right now,” she said. The White House and the Defense Department did not respond to requests for comment on the orders. Portland officials, including Mayor Keith Wilson, warned of an influx of federal agents throughout the city in a press conference Friday night. “We did not ask for them to come,” Wilson told reporters. “They are here without clear precedent or purpose. We have seen that their presence harms commerce and prosperity and opportunity in other cities like Washington, D.C.” The
Wall Street Journal [9/27/2025 6:19 PM, Jennifer Calfas and Robbie Gramer, 646K] reports Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek, a Democrat, said Saturday she told Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem that local officers can handle protecting Portland. “There is no insurrection, there is no threat to national security and there is no need for military troops in our major city,” she said at a news conference. A group of Portland residents has protested outside of an ICE building in the city for over 100 days, and their standoffs with federal police have led to arrests of some of the demonstrators. In a memo this week, Trump cited “riots” in Portland as part of growing attacks on ICE agents. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement: “We stand ready to mobilize U.S. military personnel in support of DHS operations in Portland at the President’s direction.”

CNN: Trump says he’s sending troops to Portland to protect ICE facilities
CNN [9/27/2025 11:13 AM, Kit Maher] reports President Donald Trump said Saturday he will send troops to Portland, Oregon, a city he described as "war ravaged," to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities he claimed are "under siege" by Antifa and "other domestic terrorists." The White House did not provide additional comment when reached by CNN for clarification on what the president meant by "full force" and which troops would be sent to the city. Shortly after Trump’s post, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said the Trump administration is investigating the "highly organized" nature of protests in certain American cities, claiming that some are being paid and funded. State and local leaders, including US Sen. Jeff Merkley, Portland Mayor Keith Wilson, US Rep. Maxine Dexter and City Council members, urged the community to stay peaceful at a news conference on Friday night, according to CNN affiliate KPTV, after the city saw an increase in activity by federal agents. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek wrote on social media Saturday her office had not been notified why the troops were being deployed.

FOX News: Portland mayor condemns federal intervention, claims videos of anti-ICE riots were from years ago
FOX News [9/27/2025 10:55 PM, Alexandra Koch Fox, 40019K] reports Portland Mayor Keith Wilson on Saturday dismissed President Donald Trump’s plan to send federal troops to Oregon’s largest city, claiming there is no lawlessness or violence there. Trump announced Saturday morning he plans to send troops to Portland at the request of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. The president said he directed War Secretary Pete Hegseth to provide "all necessary troops to protect war-ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists," adding he was authorizing full force, if necessary. Hours later, Wilson said during a news conference the number of necessary troops is "zero" in Portland, "and any other American city.” "This is an American city," Wilson said. "We do not need any intervention. This is not a military target.” The mayor alleged the president would "not find" lawlessness or violence in the city, claiming video footage showing violence in the city was from five years ago was "recycled and then recycled again.” "If President Trump came to Portland today, what he would find is people riding their bikes, playing sports, enjoying the sunshine, buying groceries or produce from a farmers’ market," Wilson said. "We’ve had hard conversations, and we’ve done important work in the years since that footage was taken, we reformed our public safety system. We’ve refocused our community and on our economy, and we’ve redoubled our efforts to help our most vulnerable.” Since June, protests have erupted near an ICE facility in Portland, where city officials cited land use violations, including improper detainee holding times and boarded-up windows. The building has been vandalized with anti-ICE graffiti and clashes between protesters and federal agents have occasionally turned violent, leading to the use of rubber bullets, tear gas and flash bangs. Video obtained by Fox News Digital confirmed another violent protest in August, with footage showing protesters rolling out a guillotine, lighting fires and fighting with authorities — forcing law enforcement to disperse the crowd with munitions. Instead of sending troops to protect the federal facility, Wilson suggested the president send "hundreds of engineers, or teachers, or outreach workers" to Portland instead of a "short, expensive and fruitless show of force.” "I am so deeply disappointed with the federal government’s irresponsibility," he said. "At the end of the day, this may be a show of force, but that’s all it is. It’s a big show, and after the big show, everyone goes home. That’s what I want to happen here today in Portland. We have a long and proud tradition of peaceful protest. We have a long and proud track record of being at the forefront of positive social change.” "There are new risks today, risks that we do not yet fully understand," he continued. "The administration has refused to elaborate on what they mean when they say they will deploy full force against our city and citizens.” In his announcement on Saturday, Trump did not say he would deploy full force against the city of Portland and its citizens, as Wilson claimed. The president said he would send "all necessary troops" to protect the city and its ICE facilities, authorizing full force against domestic terrorism "if necessary.” Portland, a sanctuary city since 2017, has resisted federal immigration enforcement, making it a focal point during the administration’s immigration enforcement initiative. In August, Attorney General Pam Bondi sent a letter to Wilson, warning the city’s sanctuary policies undermine U.S. interests. She demanded Portland affirm compliance with federal law and end practices that obstruct immigration enforcement. The City of Portland did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment. [Editorial note: consult video at source link]
CNN: Portland’s city leaders and residents are pushing back against ICE. Now Trump is sending in troops
CNN [9/28/2025 5:15 AM, Andy Rose, 23245K] reports a day after President Donald Trump’s second inauguration, the mayor of Portland, Oregon, knew that a “sanctuary city” like his was going to have a bumpy four years ahead. “We must come together to live our city’s shared values of freedom from fear and sanctuary from federal overreach in the days ahead, no matter what our city may face,” Mayor Keith Wilson said in a letter to the city council on January 21. In the past eight months, the city has reaffirmed that commitment by joining a lawsuit against the Trump administration and issuing a zoning violation notice for an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility that has been at the center of almost constant protests throughout the summer. Most of the protests outside the ICE facility, about 2 miles south of downtown, have been peaceful, but occasionally have ended in the deployment of tear gas and resulted in the facility being closed for several days in the summer. President Donald Trump on Saturday followed through on his pledge to make the city a target of his next National Guard deployment, saying in a social media post he was directing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to “provide all necessary troops” to Portland, a city he described as “war ravaged,” to protect ICE facilities he claimed are “under siege” by Antifa and “other domestic terrorists.” Trump has said, without evidence, that “paid terrorists” are wreaking havoc in Portland.
The Hill: Bondi deploys Justice Department agents to ICE facilities
The Hill [9/27/2025 7:53 AM, Filip Timotija, 12414K] reports Attorney General Pam Bondi said Friday night that she is deploying Department of Justice (DOJ) agents to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities and "wherever" federal immigration officers come "under siege." Bondi’s announcement came just days after a shooting at a Dallas ICE field office, where one detainee was killed, and two others were seriously injured, an attack the acting U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Texas called the "very definition of terrorism." On Friday, Bondi said she is instructing Joint Terrorism Task Forces around the country to "disrupt and investigate all entities and individuals engaged in acts of domestic terrorism, including the repeated acts of violence and obstruction against federal agents." The attorney general directed the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Marshals Service to "accelerate our efforts alongside the Department of Homeland Security to locate, apprehend, detain, prosecute and remove all illegal aliens present in our country."
FOX News: Bondi declares ‘new era of political violence’ as federal agents deploy to ICE facilities nationwide
FOX News [9/27/2025 4:33 PM, Alexandra Koch Fox, 40019K] Video:
HERE reports Attorney General Pam Bondi vowed a federal crackdown Saturday, saying that America has entered a "new era of political violence." Her stern warning against extremist groups targeting federal officers comes a day after she announced Department of Justice (DOJ) agents will be deployed to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities nationwide. Bondi’s announcement, posted in a video on X, comes days after suspected gunman Joshua Jahn, 29, opened fire on a Dallas ICE facility from a nearby rooftop, in what the FBI has described as a "targeted attack" on federal law enforcement. Jahn took his own life Wednesday after allegedly killing one detainee and wounding two others. Bondi wrote in the post that there will be "ZERO TOLERANCE" for political violence and domestic terrorism. "Assassins have tried to murder President [Donald] Trump twice and tried to kill Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh," Bondi said. "In Minnesota, legislators, and even children attending Mass, were gunned down in cold blood in two separate incidents, and an assassin targeted and murdered our friend Charlie Kirk. A sniper shot three people at a Texas ICE facility, and now more than 200 violent rioters were at a Chicago ICE facility, chanting, ‘arrest ICE, shoot ICE.’ At least one had a gun.". She noted if protesters "so much as touch one of our federal officers," they will be sent to prison.
AP/Washington Post/Wall Street Journal/Breitbart: Trump officials ask Supreme Court to uphold ban on birthright citizenship
The
AP [9/27/2025 12:24 PM, Mark Sherman and Lindsay Whitehurst] reports President Donald Trump’s administration is asking the Supreme Court to uphold his birthright citizenship order declaring that children born to parents who are in the United States illegally or temporarily are not American citizens. The appeal, shared with The Associated Press on Saturday, sets in motion a process at the high court that could lead to a definitive ruling from the justices by early summer on whether the citizenship restrictions are constitutional. Lower-court judges have so far blocked them from taking effect anywhere. The Republican administration is not asking the court to let the restrictions take effect before it rules. The Justice Department’s petition has been shared with lawyers for parties challenging the order, but is not yet docketed at the Supreme Court. Any decision on whether to take up the case probably is months away and arguments probably would not take place until the late winter or early spring. The administration is appealing two cases. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit in San Francisco ruled in July that a group of states that sued over the order needed a nationwide injunction to prevent the problems that would be caused by birthright citizenship being in effect in some states and not others. Also in July, a federal judge in New Hampshire blocked the citizenship order in a class-action lawsuit including all children who would be affected. The administration has asserted that children of noncitizens are not "subject to the jurisdiction" of the United States and therefore not entitled to citizenship. The
Washington Post [9/27/2025 9:26 AM, Justin Jouvenal, 29079K] reports Solicitor General D. John Sauer filed two petitions with the high court seeking to overturn injunctions by lower courts that found the policy was probably unconstitutional. Trump signed the ban on his first day in office, and judges have repeatedly blocked it from taking effect. The order directs government agencies to stop issuing citizenship documentation to children born to parents who are in the United States illegally. Sauer said the ban is part of Trump’s larger efforts to change the U.S. immigration system to combat what he said are “significant threats to national security and public safety” posed by illegal immigration. The
Wall Street Journal [9/27/2025 11:38 PM, Mariah Timms and Lydia Wheeler, 646K] reports that a number of lower courts have ruled that President Trump’s executive order limiting birthright citizenship is unconstitutional. The Supreme Court already took up the litigation once, on a preliminary question about how broadly judges can issue injunctions against the administration. The White House’s latest appeal puts before the court the central question of whether Trump can deny citizenship to children born in the U.S. unless one of their parents was a citizen or permanent legal resident. “The government has a compelling interest in ensuring that American citizenship—the privilege that allows us to choose our political leaders—is granted only to those who are lawfully entitled to it,” U.S. Solicitor General John Sauer wrote in a submission to the high court.
Breitbart [9/27/2025 10:32 PM, Staff, 2608K] reports that “The lower court’s decisions invalidated a policy of prime importance to the president and his administration in a manner that undermines our border security,” the DOJ said in its appeal to the Supreme Court, as reported by USA Today. “Those decisions confer, without lawful justification, the privilege of American citizenship on hundreds of thousands of unqualified people,” the appeal said. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco in July ruled in favor of a challenge filed by officials for Washington state and three others. In a separate case, U.S. District Court of New Hampshire Judge Joseph Laplante granted class action status to a case filed by individuals, which enabled that court’s ruling against the president’s executive order to have national impact. President George W. Bush appointed Laplante to the federal court in 2007. The DOJ wants the Supreme Court to review the New Hampshire case and Laplante’s ruling despite the matter being appealed to the First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston. The federal appellate court has not ruled on that case.

Bloomberg: DHS Says Tariff Collection, ICE to Continue Under Government Shutdown
Bloomberg [9/27/2025 4:12 PM, Gregory Korte, 19085K] reports the US government plans to continue collecting tariff revenues and pursuing its immigration crackdown in the event of a shutdown, according to the Department of Homeland Security. With government funding set to expire after Sept. 30 unless Congress acts, federal agencies are updating their operational plans in the event of a shutdown. DHS said that most of its security and revenue operations will be considered essential, according to a document dated Sept. 19 and posted Saturday on its website. The Trump administration has dramatically increased tariffs on a wide range of US imports and touted the revenue as a key tool for making a dent in the federal budget deficit. The agency’s planning document says that US Customs and Border Protection will continue revenue collections under a funding lapse. The agency, which houses Immigration and Customs Enforcement, is also at the center of the Trump administration’s stepped-up immigration enforcement, all of which is set to continue whether or not a stopgap spending measure is passed. Under the planning document, nearly 258,000 of DHS’s 272,000 employees will be classified as essential. That’s a higher number than under planning documents the department issued a year ago, when it had 7,000 fewer employees.

CBS New York: Demonstrations held across NYC for Stand Against ICE Day of Action
CBS New York [9/27/2025 7:52 PM, Kristie Keleshian, 45245K] reports New Yorkers citywide took part Saturday in what was called the "Stand Against ICE Day of Action," full of peaceful demonstrations and canvassing events. This follows a series of events from the past few days fueling outrage over U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s practices. Demonstrators marched down Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn and packed Sunset Park for one of eight events held across the city, started by members of the City Council Progressive Caucus. "Not only our immigrant neighbors should know their rights, but regular U.S. citizens should know their rights because we see this administration is breaking, violating laws all over the place," Councilmember Alexa Aviles said. "If they were doing things legally, there would be no issues or no problems, so I’m constantly questioning what they’re doing," Assemblymember Marcela Mitaynes said. Demonstrators were told to wear white as a way to show peace in their message. "We reject this violent Trump agenda, and we want our neighbors to know that they are safe here," Aviles said. Demonstrator Damien Andrade said he was participating to stand in solidarity with his father, who is undocumented. "He’s also very scared to go outside today, and since we’re trying to get him papers and, you know, that process, it takes a very, very long time," he said. He added, "We’re not seen as humans, we’re just seen as objects to be just thrown and we’re not ... We all bleed the same color. Everybody on this Earth bleeds the same color. It doesn’t matter about your race, your nationality.” Rallies follow Texas ICE facility shooting, violent altercation in NYC. The Day of Action comes one day after U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi promised to send Justice Department agents to protect ICE agents following a shooting on Wednesday at a Texas ICE field office. One detainee was killed, and two others were injured. The AG said on social media that these attacks "only strengthen our resolve to complete the work begun.” Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement, "We are not going to allow domestic terrorists to attack our law enforcement.” The rallies also follow an incident that happened Thursday at 26 Federal Plaza, when an ICE officer was caught on camera pushing a woman to the ground as she pleaded with him after her husband was detained. The ICE officer has since been relieved of his duties. McLaughlin, in a statement, described the agent’s actions as "unacceptable and beneath the men and women of ICE.” New government statistics also show that non-criminals make up the largest portion of detainees arrested by ICE at 35%. Of those transferred by Customs and Border Protection, 81% have no criminal charges or convictions.
NBC News/AP/Washington Examiner: [PA] Kilmar Abrego Garcia transferred to a Pennsylvania detention facility
NBC News [9/27/2025 2:14 PM, Minyvonne Burke, 43603K] reports Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland father who was wrongly deported to El Salvador and later brought back to the U.S. before facing new deportation efforts, was transferred to a central Pennsylvania detention center Friday morning, his attorneys said. Abrego, 30, was taken to the Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Philipsburg, according to federal court documents filed by his attorneys. They said Immigration and Customs Enforcement notified them of the transfer earlier in the day. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin confirmed Saturday that Abrego was transferred. The court documents state that an ICE official told Abrego that the transfer to Pennsylvania would allow his attorneys "greater access to him." But Abrego’s lawyers said it is "not yet clear whether that is true." The
AP [9/27/2025 8:25 PM, Staff, 37974K] reports that court records show Immigration and Customs Enforcement notified Abrego Garcia’s lawyers Friday that he was transferred to the Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Phillipsburg. It said the location would make it easier for them to access him. However his attorneys raised concerns about conditions at Moshannon, saying there have been recent reports of "assaults, inadequate medical care, and insufficient food," according to a federal court filing. The Trump administration has claimed that Abrego Garcia was a member of the MS-13 gang, an allegation that he denies and for which he was not charged. The administration returned Abrego Garcia to the U.S. in June, but only to face human smuggling charges. His lawyers have called the case preposterous and vindictive. The
Washington Examiner [9/27/2025 11:46 PM, Christine Valora, 1563K] reports that the long-running deportation saga of Abrego Garcia has become one of the most high-profile cases of Trump administration’s deportation efforts to date. The administarion has claimed that Abrego Garcia was a member of the MS-13 gang, an allegation that he denies and for which he was not charged. An Immigration and Customs Enforcement official told Abrego Garcia’s lawyers that the transfer from Virginia’s Farmville Detention Center will "allow Mr. Abrego-Garcia’s legal team greater access to him," the filing stated. In response, his attorneys said, "It is not yet clear whether that is true.” Abrego Garcia filed a status report on Sept. 19, detailing how his detention at the Farmville Detention Center "placed substantial burdens on the defense’s ability to meet" with him, his counsel told the judge. Abrego Garcia’s lawyers have argued that travel to Moshannon is far more difficult for members of the defense team based in Nashville, and not easier for those in New York. "Conditions at Moshannon are also deeply concerning," his attorneys said, citing a detainee who died by hanging in August, reports of assaults, inadequate medical care and insufficient food. The administration returned Abrego Garcia to the U.S. in June, but only to face human smuggling charges. His lawyers have called the case preposterous and vindictive. Abrego Garcia has pleaded not guilty.
NewsNation: More clashes at ICE detention center near Chicago
NewsNation [9/27/2025 10:13 PM, Mills Hayes, 6811K] reports officials in the western Chicago suburb of Broadview say Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency officers warned local police there will be a "s— show" in the village Saturday as protesters continued clashing with federal authorities at an ICE detention center. A village spokesperson said ICE officers told the Broadview Police Department on Saturday that federal authorities would launch an "enforcement action throughout all of Broadview" and again deploy chemical agents. David Ormsby said the ICE comments are seen as retaliation for Broadview leaders urging the Trump administration not to "make war" on the community. "ICE is seeking to intimidate the Village of Broadview because we dared exercise our 1st Amendment constitutional rights calling for an end to their war on Broadview. We will not be intimidated," Ormsby said in a news release. In an emailed response to NewsNation, ICE denied its officers made threats. "This is made up. Our law enforcement enforces the rule of law. Period," Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said. Forty migrants arrested in Chicago as protests continue at ICE detention center | NewsNation Prime. NewsNation correspondent Mills Hayes was at the ICE facility Saturday evening as officers made arrests and deployed tear gas and other non-lethal methods meant to repel crowds. Border Patrol Commander-at-Large Gregory Bovino, whose department is handling security, was on hand. A protester who identified herself as Amanda Starr of Wisconsin said she returned to the ICE detention center in Broadview, even after being struck by a rubber bullet on Friday. "If they’re treating protesters like that, out in the open, how are they treating people in that building?" she said. The suburban ICE facility has been the backdrop for tense encounters between federal authorities and protesters who oppose the Trump administration’s mass deportations of undocumented individuals. The White House launched "Operation Midway Blitz" earlier this month in Chicago, a sanctuary city at odds with Trump policies. Demonstrators are trying to impede operations at the Broadview facility. Despite the clashes, ICE officials said 40 migrants were arrested as part of the operation Saturday. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, a Democrat, blamed the Trump administration for setting the stage for trouble. "Donald Trump is using federal agents to stoke fear and violate constitutional rights — all with the aims of expanding his control and sending military troops to our cities. It’s unlawful and un-American. We must all stand up and speak out against fanning the flames of violence," he said.

CBS Chicago: ICE agents launching "enforcement action" amid ongoing protest in Broadview, village says
CBS Chicago [9/27/2025 8:47 PM, Marissa Sulek, 45245K] reports the village of Broadview is claiming that ICE came at them with profanities and intimidation tactics on Saturday. U.S. Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino posted a video to "X" showing multiple ICE detainments outside Home Depots and other areas in Chicago. It comes as the village of Broadview also sent out a press release on Saturday. The release reads in part, "In retaliation for the Village of Broadview yesterday calling on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency to "stop making war on our community," ICE agents this morning informed the Broadview Police Department that there will be "a s*** show’ in Broadview today." "I know personally I don’t like all the violence," Bryan Brannon said. Brannon has been outside protesting at the Broadview facility all week. That’s where the village said the Broadview Fire Department was told ICE agents would launch enforcement all day. They were told agents would deploy chemicals like tear gas and pepper spray against citizens, residents, and first responders. "It’s scary because they are already firing non-lethal rounds at us," Brannon said. "I worry that at some point they are going to get scared and start using lethal rounds or something." Broadview said the profanity was used in a verbal comment between village police and ICE. CBS News Chicago reached out to Homeland Security to see if profanities were used toward Broadview officials. They said in a response, "This is made up. Our law enforcement enforces the rule of law. period." "I came with a sign and bubbles because I am obviously looking for trouble," Lolita said. She said she wouldn’t be surprised if the federal government was using scare tactics. "That’s what they expect because they want to intimidate people and not have people show up," she said. Mayor Katrina Thompson said she wants residents to take precautions and protect themselves. The village said ICE is trying to intimidate Broadview for using its First Amendment rights to call "an end to the war." The village responded, "We will not be intimidated. We are Broadview strong." Chicago Tribune [9/27/2025 6:20 PM, Kate Perez, 5352K] reports following weeks of increasingly tense protests at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement processing facility in suburban Broadview, village officials on Saturday said ICE was retaliating against the suburb and its residents because the mayor asked the federal agency to stop "making war on my community." In a statement released Saturday morning, village officials urged residents to stay out of harm’s way and "take all necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families" from ICE. The statement followed a letter sent Friday by Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson to a Department of Homeland Security field office director that said ICE was endangering residents, police officers, firefighters and "American citizens exercising" their First Amendment rights as ICE repeatedly deployed tear gas, pepper spray and baton rounds during protests outside the ICE facility on Beach Street. As of noon Saturday, no major disturbances had been reported in Broadview. Tensions have also risen between Broadview officials and ICE. Village officials said in response to the letter, ICE made the comments to the Broadview police about launching more enforcement actions throughout the suburb, according to the Saturday statement. Agents also plan to deploy chemical arms again Saturday, including tear gas and pepper spray, ICE warned the fire department, the village officials said in the statement.
Washington Post: Videos of fatal ICE shooting in Chicago raise questions about DHS account
Washington Post [9/28/2025 5:00 AM, Kim Bellware, Jonathan Baran, and Arelis R. Hernández, 32099K] reports Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez had just dropped off his 3-year-old son at day care when an unmarked vehicle pulled in front of his car. Less than a minute later, the father of two was shot dead by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says ICE was targeting a “criminal illegal alien” who refused to follow their commands. In a statement, DHS said Villegas-Gonzalez drove his car at law enforcement officers, hitting one and dragging him a “significant distance.” “Seriously injured” and “fearing for his own life,” DHS said, the officer fired his gun. “We are praying for the speedy recovery of our law enforcement officer,” DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said. “He followed his training, used appropriate force, and properly enforced the law to protect the public and law enforcement.” But videos collected from nearby businesses and bystanders show both officers engaged in tactics that experts in policing said put them at unnecessary risk. Video also shows the hurt officer was fully mobile after the shooting and described his injuries as “nothing major.” And while DHS has said it is targeting the “worst of the worst,” records from Chicago’s Cook County show Villegas-Gonzalez had no record of violence. Since illegally crossing the border nearly two decades ago, he has been charged only with traffic violations in the city where he settled. “Reckless conduct, in my opinion, may have led to the officer being in a situation where they were, quote, ‘dragged,’” said Philip Stinson, a professor of criminal justice and founder of the Police Integrity Research Group at Bowling Green State University. “And I would use the term drag with a bit of caution in terms of accepting that as the truth, because we really don’t know.” Stinson is one of four experts with decades of experience in criminal justice who reviewed the footage at The Washington Post’s request. The experts said the videos provide too little information to determine whether the use of fatal force was proportionate to the officer’s perceived threat. ICE officers do not routinely wear body cameras, and the only available such footage is from responding agencies capturing the aftermath.
USA Today: Who were the victims of the Dallas ICE facility shooting? Here’s what we know.
USA Today [9/27/2025 6:50 PM, Eduardo Cuevas, 64151K] reports details are still trickling in about three migrant victims, days after a Sept. 24 shooting at a Dallas Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office. Names and nationalities of the three detainees who were shot have now been released. The shooting left one dead and two in critical condition, in what investigators described as a targeted attack against ICE personnel. No agents were injured in the attack, though the 29-year-old man allegedly shot detainees who were shackled in a van at the field office from a nearby rooftop. The official provided alleged criminal histories of the detainees, but did not specify which man died, nor the extent of the other two wounded men who survived. Dallas County Medical Examiner’s records indicate Guzman-Fuentes, 37, died; officials ruled his death a homicide. Federal officials have increased security at ICE facilities nationwide. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced in a Sept. 26 X post that the Justice Department would deploy agents to protect ICE facilities.
CBS News: Arlington family reeling after husband shot in sniper attack at Dallas ICE facility: "He’s a great husband, the best father"
CBS News [9/27/2025 9:33 PM, Steve Pickett, 45245K] reports Stephany Gauffeny describes her husband, Miguel Garcia, as a devoted father and loving partner. "He’s a great husband, the best father," Gauffeny said in an interview. But early Wednesday morning, everything changed. "I woke up and heard it on the news," she recalled. "I said, ‘I can’t believe this happened.’ Then I get a call — your husband is in the hospital and is part of this attack.” Garcia, 31, remains in critical condition at Parkland Hospital after being shot at least eight times. He is one of three victims in a sniper-style shooting at a Dallas immigration enforcement office and detention center. The family lives in Arlington. Gauffeny said Garcia came to the United States from Mexico at age 13. He was recently arrested on a DWI charge but had been released. She said she’s seen the video released by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement showing shackled detainees — and believes her husband should have been better protected. "Why are they now talking about taking safety measures?" Gauffeny asked. "Why couldn’t they have protected him better in their custody?". The shooting has sparked renewed conversations about violence and hate in the community. "There’s been a lot of hate going on, a lot of violence," she said. Authorities have released a photo of the suspect, but Gauffeny said it’s painful to see. "I don’t like seeing his picture everywhere," she said. "It hurts me. I’d rather see my husband’s picture — for everyone to see who he is. Not just a victim. Not just someone who was shot.” The suspected shooter, 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, was killed by law enforcement after a standoff near the facility. Investigators say Jahn opened fire from a nearby parking structure, targeting the ICE office and detention center. The motive remains under investigation.
New York Post: US preps for attacks against drug lords deep inside Venezuela as tensions flare: report
New York Post [9/27/2025 3:50 PM, Ryan King, 43962K] reports the Trump administration is reportedly drafting plans to strike drug traffickers inside Venezuela, potentially in weeks, marking a major escalation from targeting the cartel in boats in the southern Caribbean. President Trump has yet to approve any of the attack plans, but the move comes in response to concerns that Venezuela strongman President Nicolas Maduro, has failed to stem the flow of drugs from his country into the US and elsewhere, NBC News reported. Initial plans include the use of drones to strike leadership and members of drug trafficking cartels as well as labs, according to the report, which cited four sources familiar with the plans. "We’ll see what happens," Trump said earlier this month when asked about whether he would support strikes inside the South American Country. "Venezuela is sending us their gang members, their drug dealers and drugs. It’s not acceptable." The Post reached out to both the White House and Pentagon for comment.
Reuters/Axios: Colombian President Petro accuses US of violating international law after visa revoked
Reuters [9/27/2025 10:55 AM, Luis Jaime Acosta and Natalia Siniawski, 45746K] reports Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Saturday dismissed the U.S. decision to revoke his visa and accused Washington of violating international law over his criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza. The U.S. said on Friday it would revoke Petro’s visa after he took to New York’s streets on Friday to join a pro-Palestinian demonstration and urged U.S. soldiers to disobey President Donald Trump’s orders. "I no longer have a visa to travel to the United States. I don’t care. I don’t need a visa... because I’m not only a Colombian citizen but a European citizen, and I truly consider myself a free person in the world," Petro said on social media. "Revoking it for denouncing genocide shows the U.S. no longer respects international law," he added on a post on X.
Axios [9/27/2025 3:55 PM, Lauren Floyd and Marc Caputo, 14595K] reports that the Trump administration believes Petro, a left-leaning leader who’s an ally of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro, wants to pick a fight with the U.S. president ahead of the Colombia’s presidential elections next year. Petro is barred from reelection but and the U.S. does not want one of his allies to succeed. The U.S. position: it opposes Petro and supports the Colombian people. Petro said in a statement on X that he was expressing his "opinions freely." "International law is the wisdom of humanity and it protects me," he said. "Genocide is a crime against humanity and humanity must respond, judge, and punish. "Mr. Trump has violated the founding principles of the UN. Time to go to a more democratic place. I propose Doha as the headquarters of the United Nations."
Blaze: How many immigrants have actually left the country?
Blaze [9/28/2025 6:30 AM, Bill King, 1805K] reports about a month ago, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem held a press conference to announce that about “1.6 million illegal immigrants have left the United States population.” That’s a fraction of the number of people who arrived in the years that the Biden administration essentially opened the border. But it’s a lot of people, and it engendered much eye-rolling among journalists who compared Noem’s claim to Attorney General Pam Bondi’s declaration that President Trump’s drug interdiction policies had saved 258 million lives, roughly 75% of the U.S. total population. However, in the weeks since Noem’s announcement, several data points have since emerged that suggest her estimate may be reasonably accurate. It might even be too low. In August, the Pew Research Center estimated that the U.S. foreign-born population dropped from 53.3 million at the beginning of the year to 51.9 million by the end of June — a decline of 1.4 million in just six months. The Pew report noted that the January count of 53.3 million was “the largest number ever recorded” and that the decline this year will be the first decline in the immigrant population since the 1960s. About the same time, the Center for Immigration Studies estimated that the foreign-born population fell by 2.2 million in the first seven months of the year. The center estimates that 1.6 million of those who left were in the country illegally. If this estimate is correct, it would indicate that about 600,000 immigrants left, despite having the option legally to stay. The center’s report indicates that it relied in part on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which tracks the number of foreign-born workers. The bureau’s data shows that the number of foreign-born workers peaked in March at 32.2 million, before falling to 30.8 million by August — a decline of 1.4 million. Even so, the level remains historically high, and numbers appeared to stabilize in late summer. Last week, the Congressional Budget Office updated its demographic projections, based on changes in immigration patterns and enforcement since the beginning of the year. It lowered its projection for the population in 2055 from 372 million to 367 million. The current population is about 350 million, so their projection suggests that the U.S. will add only 17 million new residents over the next 30 years. That will be the slowest population growth in the country’s history. The Congressional Budget Office also projects that natural population growth (births minus deaths) will turn negative in 2031. At that point, any population growth will be almost entirely dependent on incoming immigrants. (Longer life spans play a minor role in such projections.) The office’s numbers still assume growth from immigration this year and in subsequent years. That certainly seems unlikely, at least for this year, given all the preliminary data showing that many immigrants have already left the country. If the U.S. population declines this year, it will be only the second time in the nation’s history. The only other time was in 2021, at the height of the COVID pandemic.

Daily Signal: Violent Democrat-Left Aims to Melt ICE
Daily Signal [9/27/2025 5:00 PM, Deroy Murdock, 668K] reports Joshua Jahn, 29, was just the latest perpetrator in the explosion in Democrat-Left political violence. Jahn’s assault on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas was like a fake-Gucci-bag knockoff of previous leftist attacks. Jahn was a rooftop sniper, just like Charlie Kirk’s suspected assassin, Tyler Robinson, and Thomas Matthew Crooks, who shot President Donald J. Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024. Like Robinson and Minneapolis transgender church assailant Robert/Robin Westman—who wrote "Hey fascist, catch!" and "Kill Donald Trump" on their respective ammunition—Jahn scrawled "anti-ICE" on his bullet. While Jahn apparently targeted ICE agents, he haplessly struck three illegal aliens, killing one. Jahn then fatally opened fire on himself. ICE and Department of Homeland Security personnel lately have endured relentless leftist political mayhem. Why all the bad vibrations? The Left’s violence-prone individuals take their cues from leading Democrats who deploy aggressive, extremist rhetoric against ICE. Regarding political violence, Vice President JD Vance got it exactly right on Wednesday. "We’ve got to stop it. We’ve got to condemn it. And that starts, unfortunately, at the very top of the Democratic Party," Vance said in North Carolina. "If you want to stop political violence, stop attacking our law enforcement as the Gestapo," he continued. "If you want to stop political violence, stop telling your supporters that everybody who disagrees with you is a Nazi. If you want to stop political violence, look in the mirror."
CBS News: [MD] Community outrage after ICE arrest in Prince George’s County turns chaotic
CBS News [9/28/2025 12:18 AM, Tara Lynch, 45245K] Video:
HERE reports a video showing an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrest in Prince George’s County has left a community on edge. It appears to show ICE officers pinning a man to the ground in Hyattsville in the middle of an intersection. During the scuffle, an agent’s firearm appears to get loose and once retrieved, the agent seems to point it toward bystanders. In a statement from Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, the agency tells WJZ Job Arias-Mendoza was arrested Sept. 24, calling him a "dangerous criminal". The agency says he entered the United States illegally from El Salvador at an unknown date and time. It also says Arias-Mendoza has prior arrests for first-degree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, concealing a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest. The nine-minute video showing Arias-Mendoza’s arrest has drawn some concern on social media and in Hyattsville. It seems he was yelling "help me" to bystanders, as well as shouting "I am American. I love America". DHS says Arias-Mendoza actively resisted federal law enforcement and attempted to bite an officer. He also had multiple knives and drugs in his possession, according to the agency. In a video showing the struggle, an ICE officer has his gun drawn before putting it in his belt. Seconds later it appears to get loose and fall onto the street. After a brief tussle, the officer retrieves the firearm and appears to point it at bystanders. [Editorial note: consult video at source link]
WBEZ 91.5 FM Chicago: [IL] Prison company hiring for Chicago-area ICE centers ready to cash in on Trump deportation campaign
WBEZ 91.5 FM Chicago [9/28/2025 6:30 AM, Tom Schuba and Frank Main] reports a politically connected prison company that’s been the target of lawsuits and a federal investigation is now hiring staff to support President Donald Trump’s deportation campaign in the Chicago area. Tennessee-based CoreCivic is benefiting from Trump’s aggressive immigration enforcement agenda and his reversal of an order under the Biden administration that barred the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Marshals Service from contracting with private detention facilities, the company told investors earlier this year. The publicly traded company — formerly known as Corrections Corporation of America — has posted online ads seeking administrative workers to support U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Chicago and at ICE’s Broadview facility, which is used to temporarily hold detained immigrants. The Broadview center is where demonstrators recently have been hit with rubber bullets and pepper powder while protesting the Trump administration’s continued immigration “blitz.” CoreCivic and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which includes ICE, won’t say how many people the company is aiming to hire for the $37-an-hour positions. “Increasing demand for the solutions we provide, particularly from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, contributed to a strong second quarter, as nationwide detention populations under ICE custody reached an all-time high,” said Damon T. Hininger, CoreCivic’s chief executive officer. CoreCivic spokesman Brian Todd said the company “plays a limited but important role in America’s immigration system” and helps the government reduce costs. Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said ICE has “a long-standing relationship” with CoreCivic that has stretched through the Obama and Biden administrations. McLaughlin said the federal government wants to partner with Gov. JB Pritzker, a Democrat, “to open the next state ICE facility — but he’d rather murderers, pedophiles, rapists and gang members be loose on Illinois streets.”
Houston Chronicle: [TX] Display outside 2nd Ward home depicting ICE agents being hanged ignites online debate
Houston Chronicle [9/27/2025 4:49 PM, Ashley Soebroto, 2356K] reports the owner of 2nd Ward home who built a display that depicts two mannequins with red hats being hanged from gallows says it’s his First Amendment right to put up the tableau. Mark Rodriguez, a 56-year-old native Houstonian, said he put up the display to express his feelings and the general fear among the Hispanic community about recent immigration crackdown. "When people are in fear of going to churches or schools or to restaurants, that’s like my 92-year-old veteran father," Rodriguez said. "He doesn’t carry his passport around. Would it give the right for somebody to ask him for his passport because he’s Hispanic?" Rodriguez said he’s not intimidated or afraid of critical posts, adding that display was not meant to threaten violence. "By no means am I threatening ICE, by no means am I threatening law enforcement," Rodriguez said. "It just seems that our country is being divided more."
USA Today: [TX] Wife of victim in Dallas ICE field office shooting found him shackled to hospital bed
USA Today [9/27/2025 8:19 PM, Rick Jervis and Eduardo Cuevas, 64151K] reports the last time Stephany Gauffeny spoke to her husband, she was encouraged by the excitement in his voice. He was coming home. Miguel Angel Garcia Medina, 31, was expected to be remanded to Immigration and Customs Enforcement from Tarrant County Jail in Arlington, Texas, over a DUI. But the couple hatched a plan that would keep them together even as the Trump administration stepped up deportation sweeps. Garcia started a visa process to stay in the United States permanently, had married Gauffeny and together they would raise four kids with a fifth baby on the way. “He was feeling happy," Gauffeny said in an interview with USA TODAY of the Sept. 23 phone call. "He knew he would end up with ICE but we had a plan to keep him in the U.S.” That plan imploded the following day. On Sept. 24, Garcia had just been transported from Arlington to the Dallas ICE field office when a gunman opened fire on the building and the van with an 8 mm bolt-action rifle, killing one detainee and seriously injuring Garcia. Garcia, 31, was one of three detainees injured or killed that day. The next time Gauffeny saw him, on Sept. 24, Garcia was in a hospital bed at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. His face was swollen. Tubes snaked down his throat. Staples closed a scar across his head. Dried blood dappled his face, neck and bedsheets. His arms were restrained to the bed and his feet were shackled together at the ankles. He was unconscious. “They’re not respecting him as a human being,” she said. “He can’t even move. It really feels unfair the way he’s being treated when he’s been [the victim] of a hate crime.”
FOX News: [TX] Dallas ICE agents stress focus on criminals during ride-along, day before shooting
FOX News [9/27/2025 8:00 AM, Elizabeth Heckman, 40019K] reports ICE agents say they have seen higher morale during the Trump administration. To understand what their work looks like on the ground, Fox News Digital joined agents in Dallas and Houston, observing operations and hearing directly from them about the focus of their mission. A Dallas ICE Assistant Field Office Director, who requested anonymity, said, "We’re working under an administration that has our back." The Dallas ride-along took place on September 23. Just one day later, a gunman opened fire at the ICE field office in Dallas, authorities confirmed. The Dallas agent noted that ICE’s role is often misunderstood, particularly when encounters are shared on social media without context. He emphasized that the priority of ICE is to keep the streets safe, saying, "We are targeting individuals with criminal history."
FOX News: [IA] Social media erupts after ICE arrest of superintendent in Iowa: ‘Crazy story’
FOX News [9/27/2025 12:30 PM, Cameron Arcand, 40019K] reports reactions poured in on social media following the Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrest of the Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent this week. Ian Roberts was arrested by ICE, which says he is in the country illegally from Guyana and was not legally permitted to work in the United States, and had a final order of removal from a judge last May. On Friday, he was arrested after allegedly driving away from law enforcement after "identifying himself" to them. He later abandoned his car in the woods, and Iowa State Patrol ended up finding him, according to a press release. The district said that Roberts had previously done an I-9 to prove legal status, but that it was conducted by a third-party group and that it did not know about an order of removal, according to the Associated Press. Roberts came to the United States with a student visa in 1999 and had charges for weapon possession in 2020, according to ICE.
NewsNation: [NV] Department of Justice removes Nevada from sanctuary state list
NewsNation [9/27/2025 12:28 PM, Stephanie Overton, 6811K] reports the Department of Justice removed Nevada from a list of sanctuary states after the state agreed to "fully collaborate on immigration enforcement," according to a release. In August, the Department of Justice listed Nevada as a sanctuary state, stating it had "policies, laws, or regulations that impede enforcement of federal immigration laws." On Friday, Sept. 26, the Department of Justice announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Nevada to "fully collaborate on immigration enforcement." The DOJ said that the list that initially included Nevada has now been updated to remove the state following work between the department and the state. This is the first removal from the list since the list was published. The MOU lists several steps Nevada has taken to collaborate on enforcement, including the use of Federal Emergency Management Agency funding to "enhance the ability" of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to support federal operations in Nevada. It also listed Gov. Lombardo’s authorization of the Nevada National Guard to assist with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations.
Daily Wire: [CA] Trump Authorizing ‘Full Force’ Of Military To Protect ICE From Antifa, Domestic Terrorists
Daily Wire [9/27/2025 11:54 AM, Amanda Prestigiacomo, 3184K] reports President Donald Trump on Saturday morning said he was authorizing Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to "provide all necessary troops" to protect Portland and any U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities under attack by far-Left Antifa and other domestic terrorists. Trump noted that the request came from Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, and that he’s authorizing "full force, if necessary." "At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists," the president posted to Truth Social. "I am also authorizing Full Force, if necessary," he added. "Thank you for your attention to this matter!"
The Hill: [CA] Federal jury indicts three women over ICE doxing in California
The Hill [9/27/2025 10:19 AM, Filip Timotija, 12414K] reports a federal grand jury indicted three women over allegedly illegally doxing an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent last month, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Friday. The three women — two from Southern California and one from Colorado — allegedly followed an ICE agent home, livestreaming the encounter and posting the officer’s home address on Instagram. The women — Cynthia Raygoza, 37, of Riverside, Calif.; Ashleigh Brown, 38, of Aurora, Colo. and Sandra Carmona Samane, 25, of Panorama City, Calif. — were charged with one count of conspiracy and one count of publicly disclosing the personal information of a federal agent, according to the indictment unsealed on Friday. "Our brave federal agents put their lives on the line every day to keep our nation safe," Acting U.S. Attorney of Central District of California, Bill Essayli, said in a statement. "The conduct of these defendants are deeply offensive to law enforcement officers and their families. If you threaten, dox, or harm in any manner one of our agents or employees, you will face prosecution and prison time." Samane and Brown were detained on federal criminal complaints. Brown is in federal custody without bond, while Samane is free on $5,000 bond, the DOJ said. The search for Raygoza is ongoing.
The Hill: [CA] US citizen injured in LA immigration raid seeks $50 million in federal claim
The Hill [9/27/2025 4:12 PM, Ashleigh Fields, 12414K] reports a U.S. citizen injured during a Los Angeles immigration raid has filed a $50 million federal tort claim against the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and two of its agencies for the use of "excessive force.". Rafie Ollah Shouhed, 79, said he suffered from multiple broken ribs, contusions and symptoms of a traumatic brain injury after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents allegedly slammed him to the ground earlier this month. Agents were targeting five people from Guatemala and Mexico during the Sept. 9 operation that took place at his car wash business, according to a DHS statement shared with The Associated Press. DHS said Shouhed was originally arrested for "impeding" a federal officer. DHS has six months to review the claim and settle or deny before a federal lawsuit can be filed, the AP reported.

Breitbart: Democrats Begin to Criticize H-1B Program Amid Mass Firing of Americans
Breitbart [9/27/2025 5:47 PM, Neil Munro, 2608K] reports a bipartisan pair of Senators is asking 10 major CEOs to explain why they are hiring Indian and Chinese H-1B migrants while they are also firing skilled American professionals. "With all of the homegrown American talent relegated to the sidelines, we find it hard to believe that [you] cannot find qualified American tech workers to fill these positions allocated by the H-1B lottery program," said the September 25 letter signed by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL). "In evaluating the high unemployment rate for American tech workers, we cannot ignore the massive, ongoing layoffs ordered by you and your peers in Big Tech C-suites over the past few years… At the same time you have been laying off your employees, you have been filing H-1B visa petitions for [thousands of] foreign workers," Grassley and Durbin wrote in the letters.
NPR: DACA has bipartisan support in Congress. Still, Republicans are following Trump’s lead
NPR [9/28/2025 5:00 AM, Ximena Bustillo, 34837K] reports Congressional Republicans are waiting on President Trump to signal he is ready to negotiate a permanent solution for recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA. Over the last decade, DACA has received varying degrees of support from Republican lawmakers. The program, created in 2012 to protect children who arrived in the country illegally prior to 2007 from deportation, now benefits around half a million people. During the last few months, there have been reports of DACA recipients without criminal records being detained by federal immigration officials despite the protection the program offers from immigration enforcement. As Trump expands the reach of his mass deportation effort bolstered by record funding from Congress, immigration advocates and Democrats are raising concern that those on DACA may get caught in the crosshairs. Nearly 20 DACA recipients have been detained by immigration officials this year, according to the immigrant rights group Home is Here. But Republican lawmakers open to a solution are still deferring to the executive branch to broker a deal. "I understand they are undocumented. I get it that they broke the law. I get it. But they’re needed in the economy and someone gave them a job," said Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar, a Republican from Florida who earlier this year introduced a bill that would provide a pathway to legal status for DACA recipients and others. "President Trump is a guy who gets things done and he can do it. And I am sure that he will come to the realization that this is what’s good for America so we can make America greater." Salazar’s bill has received bipartisan support. But in interviews with Republican lawmakers who have previously supported a pathway to legal status for DACA recipients, nearly every lawmaker was clear: Trump needs to be the one to start talks.
CBS News: [PA] Kilmar Abrego Garcia transferred to Pennsylvania detention center, attorneys say
CBS News [9/27/2025 4:03 PM, Jared Ochacher and Camilo Montoya-Galvez, 45245K] Video:
HERE reports Kilmar Abrego Garcia was transferred to a Pennsylvania detention center on Friday, his attorneys said in a status update, explaining to a federal judge handling his human smuggling case in Tennessee why a motion wasn’t promptly filed. Abrego Garcia, the 30-year-old native of El Salvador who was mistakenly deported to his home country in March, was previously held at the Farmville Detention Center in Virginia. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement notified Abrego Garcia’s legal counsel that he was transferred to the Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania, on Friday morning, the court document filed on the same day said. An ICE official told Abrego Garcia’s lawyers that the transfer will "allow Mr. Abrego-Garcia’s legal team greater access to him," the filing stated. In response, his attorneys said, "It is not yet clear whether that is true.". CBS News has reached out to the Department of Justice for comments.
Bloomberg: [Colombia] Colombia’s President Petro Shrugs Off US Visa Cancellation
Bloomberg [9/27/2025 9:59 AM, Patricia Garip, 19085K] reports Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro shrugged off the Trump administration’s decision to revoke his visa after he participated in a pro-Palestine protest on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York this week. “I no longer have a visa to travel to the US. I don’t care,” Petro said in an X post on Saturday morning. He added that he doesn’t need it anyway because he also claims Italian citizenship and “in reality I consider myself a free person of the world.” The US State Department said Friday that it will cancel Petro’s visa as a result of “reckless and incendiary actions.”

New York Post: [NY] Maniac outfitted with massive arsenal, including armor-piercing bullets, bashes border agent’s car in NYC
New York Post [9/27/2025 1:26 PM, Tina Moore, 43962K] reports a heavily-armed driver allegedly rammed his vehicle into a border patrol agent’s car in Midtown before being chased by the agent and police — who discovered a frightening arsenal that included armor-piercing bullets, sources said. The Friday night mayhem unfolded around 9 p.m. when the 29-year-old slammed a Dodge Durango into the off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection worker’s unmarked vehicle at East 36th Street and Madison Avenue near the Empire State Building, police sources said. The Dodge driver kept going, prompting the NYPD and the agent to give chase. When they caught up with the motorist a few blocks away law enforcement allegedly found a scope, a handgun and extra ammo cartridges with the words "Level 3+" scrawled on it, which police believe means the ammo pierces body armor, according to the sources. It wasn’t clear if the driver knew where the agent, who wasn’t wearing a uniform, worked. The driver, who police believe was impaired by drugs, was in police custody facing charges Saturday. The investigation was ongoing, police sources said.
Univision: [FL] $377,000 in luxury merchandise and 349 counterfeit Rolex and Cartier items seized in Miami
Univision [9/27/2025 3:03 PM, Staff, 4932K] reports Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials reported seizing hundreds of counterfeit luxury items in Miami, valued at an estimated $377,000. The seizure includes 349 counterfeit Rolex and Cartier watches, as well as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Balenciaga products. CBP noted that the merchandise was seized before it reached unsuspecting consumers and funded transnational organized crime. In recent days, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office reported the arrest of a couple accused of selling counterfeit luxury merchandise through social media.
San Diego Union Tribune: [CA] Reports of ‘blind mule’ drug couriers grow in San Diego-Tijuana region. ‘It continues to happen.’
San Diego Union Tribune [9/27/2025 5:24 PM, Alexandra Mendoza and Alex Riggins, 1648K] reports the use of blind mules to sneak drugs into the U.S. is not a new tactic — and it’s also not one that is often publicly acknowledged by U.S. law enforcement. But in recent months, authorities on both sides of the border have issued warnings to frequent border-crossers about the potential danger. In Tijuana, police have been highlighting cases of drivers who have realized something is amiss before they’ve reached the border crossing. And in April, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s San Diego office said it was trying to "raise public awareness about the growing threat of ‘blind mule’ drug and human trafficking."

NewsMax: Biometric Airport Boarding Widens Despite Pushback
NewsMax [9/27/2025 11:18 AM, Jim Thomas, 4779K] reports a growing federal program that uses facial scans to confirm the identities of international passengers is being expanded across U.S. airports, with officials calling it a vital step in border security and immigration enforcement. Critics worry about privacy, but supporters say the technology is helping to identify visa overstays and keep flights on schedule, the New York Times reported. The "biometric exit" program, run by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, photographs passengers before departure and compares the images with passport records. Federal officials say the process prevents fraud, ensures that travelers match their documents, and closes long-standing security gaps identified after the September 11 attacks. For U.S. citizens, photos are deleted within 12 hours. For foreign nationals, images can be stored for up to 75 years, according to the Department of Homeland Security. With the system now expanding, airports are set to play a larger role in balancing privacy concerns against the government’s drive to secure borders and enforce immigration laws.

The Hill/CNN: Hurricane Humberto strengthens to Category 5, Tropical Depression 9 expected to strengthen
The Hill [9/27/2025 7:28 PM, Sophia Fanning and Alaina Papazian, 12414K] reports Hurricane Humberto has strengthened into a Category 5. Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Nine is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm Saturday night or early Sunday. Heavy rains continue over portions of eastern Cuba and the Bahamas. National Hurricane Center predicts that the storm will begin picking up speed on Monday as it starts turning to the northwest and then to the north later in the day. Hurricane-force winds extend 25 miles from the center, and tropical storm-force winds extend up to 105 miles. While the hurricane isn’t expected to make landfall, it will likely bring large swells and strong rip currents to parts of the Caribbean and the Southeast U.S. NHC is also keeping an eye on a tropical depression that’s expected to strengthen into a hurricane on Monday. The storm, currently referred to as Tropical Depression Nine, is around 180 miles northwest of the eastern tip of Cuba and is moving northwest at 6 mph. Eastern Cuba and the Bahamas are expected to get significant rainfall over the next few days, and some areas are already under a tropical storm warning. A tropical storm watch has been issued for the Atlantic Coast of Florida from Martin County up to Flagler County. Tropical Depression Nine is expected to continue moving north-northwest through the weekend and approach the Southeast U.S. early next week. While maximum sustained winds are only around 35 mph, NHC said it’s expected to become a hurricane by late Monday. If it does develop into a hurricane, it would be Hurricane Imelda. The Southeast should prepare for potential heavy rainfall or storm surge early next week that could cause severe flooding in some areas. Chances of formation for this storm are very high, at 90 percent over the next 48 hours and over the next seven days.
CNN [9/27/2025 1:28 AM, Briana Waxman and Andrew Freedman, 23245K] reports that the Federal Emergency Management Agency is "postured and ready to support states along the Southeast coast, as needed," and is "actively engaged" with several states, it said in a statement. Meanwhile, over the open Atlantic, Hurricane Humberto rapidly intensified into a Category 5 storm Friday and Saturday while tracking over warm water and a less hostile environment in the central Atlantic. Humberto is expected to continue to be a powerful Category 5 storm through the weekend. It is not a direct threat to the US, but it might bring some impacts to Bermuda next week as it tracks west of the archipelago. Humberto’s size and position could influence how future Imelda develops, how quickly it moves and where it tracks.

CBS News: Hurricane Humberto could mingle with another developing storm in what’s called the Fujiwhara effect
CBS News [9/27/2025 5:30 PM, Emily Mae Czachor, 45245K] Video:
HERE reports Humberto, the eighth named storm to emerge this hurricane season, is currently swirling over waters just north of the Caribbean as a major hurricane. While forecasts as of Saturday predict Humberto won’t ever touch land, there is a possibility it could interact with another system developing nearby in the western Atlantic. That’s an unlikely outcome, said CBS News meteorologist Nikki Nolan. But if such a collision does occur, it could produce what’s called the Fujiwhara effect, a rare phenomenon in which two different storms merge and become entangled around a newly formed, common center. How the process plays out depends on the characteristics of the storms involved, according to the National Weather Service. The forecasting agency describes the Fujiwhara effect on its website as "an intense dance" between two tropical storms that can happen when they get close enough to each other on their respective tracks to reach a common point and either join together or spin around each other for a period of time before continuing along their individual paths. In the latter scenario, the storms involved must be comparably strong or large. [Editorial note: consult video at source link]
NewsMax: [FL] FEMA Rebuild Rules Upend Florida’s Waterfront Towns
NewsMax [9/27/2025 2:14 PM, Jim Thomas, 4779K] reports after back-to-back hurricanes devastated Florida’s Gulf Coast last year, residents of this artsy waterfront city are facing wrenching choices: demolish, rebuild to costly flood-resistant codes, or walk away from homes that defined their community’s charm, The New York Times reported. Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which struck within weeks of each other, left a trail of destruction across the state. In Gulfport, a city of about 12,000 near Tampa Bay, nearly 100 homes were deemed "substantially damaged" under federal flood insurance rules. That triggered requirements to either elevate houses to modern standards or tear them down. For many, the cost was overwhelming. The mandate stems from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Flood Insurance Program, which requires homes with damage exceeding half their market value to meet new floodplain codes. FEMA says buildings constructed under these standards suffer about 80 percent less damage, but compliance has proved prohibitive for many longtime residents.
CNN/ABC News: [AZ] Devastating flooding leaves 4 dead in Arizona as officials search for more unaccounted for
CNN [9/27/2025 8:30 PM, Elise Hammond, Nayeli Jaramillo-Plata, Danya Gainor, 23245K] reports devastating floods have left at least four people dead in Arizona as rescue crews work to find more unaccounted for after heavy rains hit the region Friday night into Saturday. Three people died in the floods in Globe, Arizona, Carl Melford with Gila County Emergency Services said. About 90 miles away in Scottsdale, another person was found dead Saturday morning near where a vehicle was caught in floodwaters the night before, the Scottsdale Fire Department said. The vehicle was found partially submerged in up to 9 feet of fast-moving water on Friday night, the fire department said. The police department deployed drones and helicopters and determined the car was empty, according to a statement from the Scottsdale Fire Department. Saturday morning, when the waters dropped, officials found a body pinned under a walkway bridge outside the vehicle, the fire department said. Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs declared a state of emergency for Gila County, directing resources for ongoing search, rescue and recovery efforts countywide, including authorizing deployment of the state National Guard for support “as needed,” she announced during a Saturday evening news conference. Hobbs said she spoke with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem Saturday evening, who indicated that FEMA is prepared to assist in disaster response if necessary.
ABC News [9/27/2025 7:10 PM, Nadine El-Bawab and Jeffrey Cook, 27036K] reports that a search and rescue effort is underway for more potential victims, officials said. Two of the victims confirmed dead were found in a vehicle having drowned, officials said, and a third victim was found outside a vehicle in downtown Globe. An official could not confirm to ABC News if the victims were adults or any relation between them. A fourth man who went missing during the storm overnight was found dead Saturday morning outside his vehicle, according to the Scottsdale Police Department. Gila County Emergency Management is advising residents to shelter in place due to possible hazardous materials in the floodwaters. All available agencies in the region are responding to assist with SAR and hazmat assessment and clean up, a county emergency management official told ABC News. "Crews continued work throughout the night. We want to thank them for their diligent work. This includes Globe FD, Globe PD, Globe Public Works, Gila County, Gila County Emergency Services and DPS," the city of Globe said.

CNN: [NY] Six key questions about the dismantled network capable of crippling New York’s cell system
CNN [9/27/2025 9:30 AM, David J. Lopez] reports the US Secret Service this week revealed that a probe into a surge of swatting calls against high-ranking officials led investigators to a vast and stunning network of more than 100,000 SIM cards and 300 SIM servers. The servers could have been commanded remotely to create massive amounts of phone traffic in a stealthy and unceasing operation that switched out SIM cards quickly to keep federal law enforcement off its trail. The hidden electronic maze – concentrated within 35 miles of New York City – was so powerful, it could have sent an encrypted and anonymous text to every human being in the United States within 12 minutes, said Matt McCool, the special agent in charge of the Secret Service’s New York field office. It could have overwhelmed cell towers, toppling New York City’s cell service. CNN chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst John Miller and CNN law enforcement analyst and former Secret Service agent Jonathan Wackrow on Thursday addressed six key questions related to the investigation into the dismantled network.
Breitbart/Daily Caller: [NY] Unhinged Protester Charged with Assaulting RFK Jr. Aide at the U.N.
Breitbart [9/27/2025 2:12 PM, Lowell Cauffiel, 2608K] reports a 62-year-old woman is facing assault charges in New York City after she went ballistic protesting at the United Nations and allegedly attacked a senior advisor to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. The encounter began Thursday afternoon when the woman identified as Patricia Schuh allegedly shined a blinding light in the face of HHS aide Sara Kennedy and yelled "Free Palestine," chasing her across a lobby and into a bathroom while screaming "slut," the New York Post reported. Schuh has been charged with assault, aggravated harassment, attempted assault, and criminal possession of a weapon, Fox News Digital reported. The individual was released from custody Friday night and is expected in court on Nov. 13, according to the report. Medics treated Kennedy’s eye injury at the UN. She declined hospital treatment. The Secret Service is also reportedly investigating the incident.
Daily Caller [9/27/2025 11:27 AM, Timothy Sekerak, 985K] reports an official working in President Donald Trump’s administration was physically assaulted by a "deranged leftist" during a United Nations (U.N.) gathering on Thursday, according to sources. The official — who works in international relations for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) — was acting in a support role for HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy during the General Assembly when the assault occurred, according to Fox News Digital. The official explained what happened in a statement to the outlet. She said she was walking down a hallway when the individual began beating her and shining a light in her face. The individual was allegedly screaming pro-Palestinian comments and calling the official a "Nazi" and a "fascist.". The official claimed she tried to escape into a bathroom stall, but the individual followed her and put a camera over the door to continue filming the official and screaming at her. The official was eventually able to get away after 10 minutes of the assault, according to the outlet. The United States Secret Service will look into the incident to determine how the individual was allowed access into such a high-profile event, Kelly told the outlet. The outlet also learned that the individual was released from custody on Friday night. The person, however, was charged with assault, aggravated harassment, attempted assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. That person is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 13.
Washington Examiner: [DC] Trump HHS official assaulted at UN General Assembly by ‘deranged leftist’
Washington Examiner [9/27/2025 3:31 PM, Ross O’Keefe, 1563K] reports a "deranged leftist" assaulted a Trump administration official at the U.N. General Assembly, the White House confirmed to the Washington Examiner. The official, a Health and Human Services employee, was followed into a bathroom where the incident occurred by the person, who was later arrested. "An HHS official was followed into a bathroom, recorded, physically assaulted, and verbally accosted by a deranged leftist at the UN – who somehow entered the venue past multiple layers of security," White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly told the Washington Examiner. Kelly said the Secret Service "must investigate" how the person gained access into the UNGA and that the U.N. should answer to recent "highly concerning incidents." "Thankfully, the official is safe, and the lunatic was arrested, but this is part of a disturbing and dangerous set of failures by the UN after their sabotage of President Trump ahead of and during his speech," she said. "The USSS must investigate how this violent protestor was admitted into a major national security event and the UN must answer why these highly concerning incidents continue to happen against the President and his staff," Kelly added.
CBS News: [OR] Trump says he plans to send troops to Portland, Oregon to handle "domestic terrorists"
CBS News [9/27/2025 6:07 PM, Staff, 45245K] reports President Trump said Saturday on Truth Social that he will send troops to Portland, Oregon, to handle "domestic terrorists" as his deployments expand to more cities across the U.S. The ICE facility in Portland has been the target of frequent demonstrations, sometimes leading to violent clashes. Some federal agents have been injured and several protesters have been charged with assault. When protesters erected a guillotine earlier this month, the Department of Homeland Security described it as "unhinged behavior." Mr. Trump, in comments Thursday in the Oval Office, suggested some kind of operation was in the works. Gov. Tina Kotek also responded to Mr. Trump, saying her office is reaching out to the White House and Homeland Security to find out more information.

NBC News: [NC] 3 dead and multiple injured as shooter fires from boat at a North Carolina waterfront bar
NBC News [9/28/2025 1:48 AM, Dennis Romero and Bella LoBue, 43603K] reports three people were killed and several others were injured when someone on a boat opened fire on patrons of a waterfront eatery at a North Carolina marina on Saturday night, officials said. The boat paused in front of American Fish Company at Southport Yacht Basin and a gunman opened fire, said ChyAnn Ketchum, spokesperson for the city of Southport. Southport Police Chief Todd Coring said "possibly six" injured people were being treated at hospitals. Details on their conditions were unavailable. The city initially said eight people were injured. The three people killed were not publicly identified early Sunday. The shooter fled toward the adjacent Intracoastal Waterway, Ketchum said. The boat may have been headed toward the neighboring community of Oak Island, where authorities were continuing their investigation, Coring said. A person of interest was being questioned late Saturday, the police chief said. Oak Island said in a statement that a U.S. Coast Guard crew detained a person matching the description of the shooter after spotting them loading a boat at a public ramp in the town. Though a motive was unavailable, Coring sought to reassure residents that the violence was over. "I’m comfortable to say that we don’t feel like there’s any additional threats to the community," he said. The earlier report of an active shooter at the marina prompted a law enforcement response. The city of Southport in a statement had urged people in the area to "remain in your homes" and report anyone suspicious to authorities via 911. The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office said that it is one of multiple law enforcement agencies in the region that responded to the incident. "Please keep all those affected, as well as our first responders, in your thoughts and prayers," the sheriff’s office said. Coring said the FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were assisting the investigation. "We’re a small community, one of the communities where everybody knows everybody," the chief said. "It’s just a very tragic night.” The yacht basin exists in the southeastern corner of the state "where the Intracoastal Waterway, Cape Fear River and Atlantic Ocean converge," according to state tourism organization Visit North Carolina. The basin is lined with restaurants, it says.
FOX News: [NC] ‘Possible suspect’ in custody after gunman fires from boat toward North Carolina restaurant, killing 3
FOX News [9/28/2025 2:06 AM, Bradford Betz, 40019K] reports North Carolina authorities have a "possible suspect" in custody after a gunman fired shots from a boat into a restaurant, killing three people and injuring at least six others in the Southport Yacht Basin on Saturday night. The deadly shooting took place in Southport, North Carolina, at around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday at the American Fish Company restaurant. Southport’s public information officer said a boat with a single occupant on the Cape Fear River paused briefly in front of the restaurant and opened fire, killing three patrons and injuring multiple others. The boat then sped off in the direction of the Intracoastal Waterway towards neighboring Oak Island. The U.S. Coast Guard observed a single individual matching the description of the shooter loading their boat at a public ramp in Oak Island shortly after 10 p.m. The Coast Guard crew detained the suspect, who is now in the custody of the Oak Island Police Department. The suspect will be turned over to the Southport Police Department for questioning. "We don’t feel like there’s any additional threats to the community right now," Southport Police Chief Todd Coring told reporters during a press conference. "We’re working with neighboring Oak Island with a possible suspect.” City officials were earlier urging residents to avoid the area, remain indoors and report suspicious activity to police. The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office said it is assisting the City of Southport Police Department along with the FBI, ATF and the District Attorney’s Office. Southport is approximately 30 miles south of Wilmington. The Southport Yacht Basin has several bars and restaurants. [Editorial note: consult video at source link]

The Hill: Trump goes after antifa, sparking fears about crackdown on dissent
The Hill [9/27/2025 5:00 PM, Rebecca Beitsch and Brett Samuels, 12414K] reports an executive order labeling antifa as a domestic terrorist organization is spurring pushback from critics across the ideological spectrum who say President Trump is laying the groundwork to crack down on those with opposing views. Short for anti-fascism, national security experts say antifa is not the sprawling, organized group that Trump has claimed but rather a loosely formed ideological movement, one at times embraced by protesters who have violently clashed with police. "Antifa is a movement like feminism or environmental activism, as opposed to a distinct group," said Faiza Patel, director of the Liberty and National Security Program at the left-leaning Brennan Center for Justice. "This is not like a group that you can sort of target with financial sanctions in the same way you would with a foreign terrorist organization. So then that leads you to the question of, well, then what does this executive order actually do?" she said. White House officials argue antifa and other left-wing groups were part of a complex network that has been creating chaos and fomenting political violence, and that it needed to be addressed through the power of the federal government. "These are not lone, isolated events. This is part of an organized campaign of radical left terrorism," deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller said Thursday. "It is structured, it is sophisticated, it is well-funded, it is well-planned. There is really no parallel like this to anything else in the country right now.".

FOX News: [Russia] Russia’s Sergey Lavrov warns NATO countries in UNGA speech after Trump shifts tone on Ukraine
FOX News [9/27/2025 5:40 PM, Efrat Lachter, 40019K] Video:
HERE reports Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov used his address to the United Nations General Assembly (UGNA) on Saturday to deliver one of Moscow’s starkest warnings yet to the West, accusing NATO and the European Union of waging a "real war" against Russia. Lavrov opened with sweeping historical references to World War II, positioning Russia as the heir to the Soviet Union’s role in defeating Nazism and defending global sovereignty. He accused the U.S. of dismantling those postwar principles through interventions in Yugoslavia, Iraq and Libya, and warned that the same was happening today in the Middle East. While condemning Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack, Lavrov said Israel’s campaign in Gaza amounted to "collective punishment" of civilians, linking the conflict to what he portrayed as decades of unchecked Western use of force. Lavrov accused NATO of ignoring decades of security commitments. He insisted Russia has "never had and does not have" plans to attack NATO countries, calling Western warnings of a Russian offensive "provocations." He singled out claims by European leaders as "false portrayals" of Moscow’s intentions, echoing President Vladimir Putin’s denials that Russia plans to strike NATO or EU territory. At the same time, Lavrov issued a direct threat: "Any aggression against my country will be met with a decisive response. There should be no doubt about this among those in NATO and the EU." Reuters: [Russia] Russia launches major drone and missile attack on Ukraine, hits Kyiv hard
Reuters [9/28/2025 4:26 AM, Pavel Polityuk and Mike Collett-White, 45746K] reports Russia launched hundreds of drones and missiles at Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine early on Sunday, killing at least four people and injuring dozens, in one of the most sustained attacks on the capital since the full-scale war began. Neighbouring Poland closed its airspace near two southeastern cities and its air force scrambled jets in response until the danger had passed. Ukraine’s military said that Russia had launched 595 drones and 48 missiles overnight and its air defences shot down 568 drones and 43 missiles. It noted that the main target of the strike was the capital Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the attack lasted more than 12 hours and caused widespread damage to a cardiology clinic, factories and residential buildings. He renewed calls on the international community to act decisively to cut off Russia’s energy revenues that fund its invasion. Ukraine has so far failed to convince U.S. President Donald Trump to impose punitive sanctions on Moscow. "The time for decisive action is long overdue, and we count on a strong response from the United States, Europe, the G7, and the G20," he said on the Telegram messaging app.
AP: [Iran] Iran weighs how to respond to reimposed UN sanctions over its nuclear program
AP [9/28/2025 2:51 AM, Jon Gambrell and Amir Vahdat, 37974K] reports Iran weighed Sunday how to respond to reimposed United Nations sanctions over its atomic program, with one lawmaker suggesting parliament would consider potentially withdrawing from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. The sanctions again freeze Iranian assets abroad, halt arms deals with Tehran and penalize any development of Iran’s ballistic missile program, among other measures. It came via a mechanism known as “snapback,” included in Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, and comes as Iran’s economy already is reeling. Iran’s rial currency sits at a record low, increasing pressure on food prices and making daily life that much more challenging. That includes meat, rice and other staples of the Iranian dinner table. Meanwhile, people worry about a new round of fighting between Iran and Israel, as well as potentially the United States, as missile sites struck during the 12-day war in June now appear to be being rebuilt. Speaking to the Young Journalists Club, which is affiliated with Iranian state television, lawmaker Ismail Kowsari said Parliament would discuss withdrawing from the nuclear treaty. Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf issued his own warning to those who would honor the U.N. sanctions as parliament began meeting Sunday. “We announce that if any country wants to take action against Iran based on these illegal resolutions, it will face serious reciprocal action from Iran, and the three European countries that are the initiators of this illegal action will also face our reaction,” Qalibaf said without elaborating, according to a report by the state-run IRNA news agency.
