FOX News: Noem slams Dems downplaying ICE violence: ‘They’re giving criminals air cover’
FOX News [10/5/2025 9:08 AM, Staff, 40019K] reports Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem joins ‘Fox & Friends Weekend’ to discuss ICE protests at an immigration facility in Portland and the rise in targeted violence against agents. [Editorial note: consult video at source link]
Breitbart: Noem: Dems Downplaying Violence Against ICE Are Giving Criminals ‘Air Cover’
Breitbart [10/5/2025 12:46 PM, Pam Key, 2608K] reports Sunday on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends Weekend,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Democratic politicians downplaying the violence against ICE agents are giving criminals “air cover.” Noem said, "Let’s remember that the mayor has a less than 6% approval rating in Chicago. So the people who live there, less than 6% think he might be doing somewhat of a good job. Overwhelmingly, that man is a failure. He’s a failure for his people and hasn’t stood up for the victims of the crimes that have happened in his city. So we’re going to keep doing our work, every day when we’re there, doing our operations, when I’m there with them. People on the streets are clapping as we do our work. They’re clapping as these officers are arresting these bad criminals. And out of the 12 that we arrested during the short period of time I was there, six of them had criminal records in their backgrounds that the state had arrested them and just turned them loose on the street again for assault, for weapons, possession, for robbery. Those individuals now are off the streets thanks to President Trump, not thanks to that mayor who was delusional at best.
New York Post/NewsMax/DailySignal: Cartels target federal immigration agents with $10K bounties, Kristi Noem reveals: ‘Dangerous and unprecedented’
The New York Post [10/5/2025 10:30 AM, Ryan King, 43962K] reports Cartels, gangs, and terror groups have put bounties on the heads of several federal immigration agents, offering $10,000 to kill them and $2,000 for their capture, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem chillingly revealed Sunday. Noem said the bounties and doxing campaign against officers has roiled federal law enforcement, but didn’t specify whether it was specific to a particular agency like US Border Patrol or Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). "We have specific agents who have had bounties put out on their heads," Noem told "Fox & Friends Weekend" on Sunday. "It’s been $2,000 to kidnap them, $10,000 to kill them. They’ve released their pictures; they’ve sent them between their networks. It’s an extremely dangerous and unprecedented situation.” Due to ongoing investigations, the Homeland Security secretary was coy about which specific groups were issuing the bounties. "It is gangs, it is cartel members and known terrorist organizations," she explained broadly. "They are making sure that they know which officers are out there and being extremely effective, and they want to take them down, because they want to try to stop the operations that … are keeping them from making money off their criminal networks.” Over recent weeks, there have been a series of high-profile attacks targeting federal law enforcement officers. Last month, for example, a sniper opened fire on an ICE facility in Dallas, killing one detainee and injuring two others, before killing himself. The shooting suspect had scrawled the words "Anti ICE" on his ammo, the FBI said. On Saturday, a "caravan of 10 different vehicles" followed border patrol agents on the streets of Chicago before pinning them down, Noem claimed. "They had followed them and gotten them cornered, pinned them down, and then our agents, when getting out of their cars, they tried to run them over and had semi automatic handguns on them to where our agents had to protect themselves, and shots were fired, and an individual ended up in the hospital that was attacking these officers," she said. The DHS claimed that the woman on the Southwest Side of Chicago who was killed had been hit by "defensive shots" from Border Patrol agents. The NewsMax [10/5/2025 10:13 AM, Eric Mack, 4779K] reports that leftist agitators and protesters have gone beyond merely protesting and rioting, moving to racketeering conspiracies for deadly violence, according to Noem, forcing Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers to have their own security detail, foisting added costs on American taxpayers. "So we’ve put protective detail around those individuals, changed some of our operations to keep our officers safe, but make no mistake, this isn’t just about protesting free speech or that they don’t like that people out here are upholding the law of our country," Noem continued. The DailySignal [10/5/2025 4:12 PM, Olivia Pero, 668K] reports "Make no mistake: This isn’t just about protesting free speech or that they don’t like that people out here are upholding the laws of our country," Noem said. "They’re actually going out there and saying, ‘Kill these people, and we’ll give you this much money to do it.” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is helping the DHS "dig into the funding of the operations, [and] where they’re getting the money," Noem shared. All the protesters wear the same gas masks and carry the same kind of signs, she noted. Notably, many of the signs were printed with the same font and "look like they came from the same company.” "To be that organized and have the same equipment to push back on law and order, you know that somebody is funding them and that they’re being paid," Noem said. Noem called out Democratic Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson for his city being "a war zone.” According to Noem, local officials aren’t even letting ICE agents and border patrol officers use restrooms in government facilities. "Those men and women were telling us they have to figure out even where they can go sit down for five minutes to have lunch or to use a restroom throughout their shift and their break," explained Noem after having been on the ground with these agents in Chicago two days ago. Noem posted on X Friday that she and her team were "blocked from accessing the Village of Broadview Municiple Building.” Chicago has created a difficult situation, Noem said, but she was encouraged by how much "these officers love their jobs.”

New York Post: Kristi Noem slams ‘delusional’ Chicago mayor who let city become ‘war zone’ as Trump deploys National Guard
New York Post [10/5/2025 1:22 PM, Ryan King, 43962K] reports Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem excoriated Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson as "delusional" and faulted him for letting the Windy City devolve into a "war zone" after President Trump activated the Illinois National Guard. Johnson (D) had accused the Trump administration of mounting an unconstitutional crackdown on Chicago and dismissed Noem’s concerns that federal officers are being targeted during an interview on MSNBC. "Let’s remember that [the] mayor has a less than 6% approval rating in Chicago," she shot back on "Fox & Friends Weekend.” "Overwhelmingly, that man is a failure. He’s a failure for his people and hasn’t stood up for the victims of the crimes that have happened in his city. So we’re going to keep doing our work every day.” Virtually every poll shows Johnson underwater in Chicago, with results typically ranging from 6% to 26%, depending on the survey. Noem visited federal law enforcement on the ground in Chicago ahead of President Trump’s move to federalize some 300 National Guard troops to bolster the federal agents on the ground there. The deployment of Illinois troops — over the objection of Gov. JB Priztker (D) — follows an attack on Border Patrol agents on Chicago’s South Side on Saturday in which the feds opened fire and wounded a woman — who was later found to be armed. Noem said that locals in Chicago were applauding the federal officer protecting them and blamed the recent slate of attacks on the feds on Johnson’s rhetoric. "Absolutely, he’s giving them air cover," she said when asked if there’s a link between Johnson’s rhetoric and attacks or threats against officers. "There should be consequences for that and for leaders that stand up and knowingly lie about the situation on the ground. "This is a war zone. His city is a war zone, and he’s lying so that criminals can go in there and destroy people’s lives. Those individuals that live there are waking up to it.” Noem alleged that Chicago has been blocking federal law enforcement, including Border Patrol and US Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) officers, from using public restrooms in the city.
Breitbart/Chicago Tribune: Federal Agents Ambushed in Chicago-Area in Coordinated Act of Domestic Terrorism; Armed Suspect Shot, Local Police Flee
Breitbart [10/5/2025 7:02 AM, Bob Price, 2608K] reports federal agents were ambushed and boxed in by ten vehicles during a routine patrol in Broadview, Chicago, in what officials are calling a coordinated act of domestic terrorism. One armed suspect—previously flagged for inciting violence against law enforcement online—was shot after ramming a patrol car and confronting officers with a semi-automatic weapon. Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin reported that federal law enforcement officers and agents were boxed in and rammed by a group of ten vehicles in the Chicago-area suburb of Broadview. One of the women was armed with a semi-automatic firearm. McLaughlin said the agents fired on the armed woman. She was later transported to an area hospital for treatment of her wounds. Federal law enforcement officials were previously made aware of the woman after she threatened on social media, "Hey to all my gang let’s fuck those mother fuckers up, don’t let them take anyone.” The secretary stated that the Chicago Police Department had fled the scene and refused to assist in securing the area. A crowd gathered, forcing ICE to deploy a special operations unit to maintain control. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller called the organized attack on the ICE agents "domestic terrorism and seditious insurrection. No federal agents were seriously injured in the attack, McLaughlin noted. Breitbart [10/5/2025 7:56 PM, Warner Todd Huston, 2608K] reports that prosecutors allege that the pair "used their vehicles to strike a vehicle being driven by an agent of U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Saturday morning near the intersection of West 39th Street and South Kedzie Avenue on Chicago’s Southwest Side," the U.S. Attorney’s office wrote in a press release. "Two other CBP agents were also in the government vehicle. After striking the agents’ vehicle, the defendants’ vehicles boxed in the agents’ vehicle, the complaint states. The agent was unable to move his vehicle and exited the car, at which point he fired approximately five shots from his service weapon at Martinez," the complaint states. Ruiz was later found at a gas station close to the incident while Martinez was found with bullet wounds at a car repair shop about a mile from the scene. WLS-TV reported that Martinez was found in possession of a firearm. Assistant Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin highlighted the attack on ICE agents in a post on X on Saturday. The attack on the ICE vehicle comes as activists for illegal aliens continue to ramp up the violence against an ICE facility in Broadview, a nearby Chicago suburb. At least six protesters were arrested on Saturday outside the federal facility. The Chicago Tribune [10/5/2025 7:45 PM, Jason Meisner, 5352K] reports Marimar Martinez, 30, and Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz, 21, both of Chicago, are each charged in a criminal complaint filed Sunday with forcibly assaulting, impeding and interfering with a federal law enforcement officer. News of the charges came as state leaders blamed President Donald Trump for the escalation and for not being truthful about what is happening on the ground in Chicago. In separate national television interviews, Gov. JB Pritzker and U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, both Democrats, warned about a pattern of lies emanating from the Department of Homeland Security and the Trump administration regarding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s aggressive enforcement. "It’s really hard to know exactly what the facts are, and they won’t let us access the facts," Pritzker acknowledged on CNN’s "State of the Union" show. "They are just putting out their propaganda, and then we’ve got to later determine what actually happened." One day after the shooting, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem discussed the incident during an appearance on Fox News. She called Chicago a "war zone" and contended that the growing intensity of protests against federal law enforcement was part of an "unprecedented" effort by well-funded outside organizers and networks who are now being investigated by the government. DHS officials Saturday had said Martinez appeared in a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol bulletin last week because of online comments she purportedly made. McLaughlin quoted the post as saying: "let’s (expletive) those mother (expletives) up, don’t let them take anyone." DHS did not immediately respond to request for comment about the alleged threats, though Noem appeared to address them Sunday on television. "You know this individual had threatened them previously and had told them that they all needed to go down and shouted expletives at them," Noem said. "So our intelligence indicates that these people are organized. They’re getting more and more people on their team, as far as attacking officers, and they’re making plans to ambush them and to kill them. We have specific officers and agents that have bounties that have been put out on their heads. It’s been $2,000 to kidnap them, $10,000 to kill them. They’ve released their pictures, they’ve sent them between their networks, and it’s an extremely dangerous situation and unprecedented."

The Hill: Feds charge Chicago woman shot by Border Patrol, another driver with assault
The Hill [10/5/2025 10:45 PM, Katie Wadington, 12414K] reports federal prosecutors have charged a woman who was shot by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents on Saturday morning in Broadview, Ill., after authorities say she “boxed in” the law enforcement officers. Marimar Martinez, along with another driver, Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz, are accused of using their vehicles to hit a CBP vehicle, a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois states. “After striking the agents’ vehicle, the defendants’ vehicles boxed in the agents’ vehicle, the complaint states. The agent was unable to move his vehicle and exited the car, at which point he fired approximately five shots from his service weapon at Martinez,” the release states, citing the federal complaint. Both Martinez and Ruiz, of Chicago, are charged with forcibly assaulting, impeding, and interfering with a federal law enforcement officer, the press release said. Martinez, 30, was apprehended about a mile away, the Justice Department release said. She was treated at an area hospital for gunshot wounds. Ruiz, 21, was found about a half-mile away from the site of the incident, with his vehicle at a gas station, the prosecutor’s office said. Several CBP officers were hospitalized, officials said. In a Saturday post on the social platform X, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said that Martinez “was named in a CBP intelligence bulletin last week for doxing agents.” The incident occurred amid protests regarding the presence of ICE agents in Broadview, on Chicago’s Southwest Side. DHS on Saturday said in a release that 10 cars “boxed in” the CBP agents. Martinez then allegedly attempted to run over the agents, who then fired at the woman, DHS said. ICE operates a facility in the village of about 8,000 residents. Last month, ICE launched Operation Midway Blitz in Chicago, boosting its enforcement presence in the third-largest city in the U.S.

Breitbart: Trump administration declares US cities war zones
Breitbart [10/5/2025 1:35 PM, Staff, 2608K] reports the Trump administration branded Chicago a "war zone" Sunday as a justification for deploying soldiers against the will of local Democratic officials, while a judge blocked the White House from sending troops to another Democratic-run city. An escalating political crisis across the country pits President Donald Trump’s anti-crime and migration crackdown against opposition Democrats who accuse him of an authoritarian power grab. In the newest flashpoint, Trump late Saturday authorized deployment of 300 National Guard soldiers to Chicago, the third-largest city in the United States, despite the opposition of elected leaders including the mayor and state Governor JB Pritzker. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the move on Sunday, claiming on Fox News that Chicago is "a war zone." But Pritzker, speaking on CNN’s "State of the Union" show, accused Republicans of aiming to sow "mayhem on the ground. They want to create the war zone, so that they can send in even more troops." "They need to get the heck out," he said. A CBS poll released Sunday found that 42 percent of Americans favor deploying the National Guard to cities, compared to 58 percent who oppose it. Trump - who last Tuesday spoke of using the military for a "war from within" - shows no sign of backing off his hardline campaign.
FOX News: FBI Director Kash Patel vows justice after DHS agent’s vehicle rammed in Chicago
FOX News [10/5/2025 10:31 PM, Andrea Margolis Fox, 40019K] reports FBI Director Kash Patel promised justice after two suspects allegedly rammed a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agent’s vehicle amid growing unrest across the country. The suspects, Marimar Martinez and Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz, were described by DHS as being domestic terrorists who "ambushed" agents in Chicago on Saturday. Martinez was armed with a semi-automatic weapon and "ha[d] a history of doxxing federal agents," the DHS said in a release. "She took defensive fire from CBP agents and has been discharged from the hospital and is currently in the custody of the FBI," the statement said. "The driver of another vehicle, Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz, involved in the ramming has been apprehended by law enforcement.” In a post on Sunday evening, Patel said that officials "just arrested two individuals who were allegedly driving these vehicles and attacking our federal law enforcement officers.” "They have been charged for assaulting federal officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon," Patel added. "Attack our law enforcement, and this FBI will find you and bring you to justice.” A source from the FBI told Fox News Digital that the cases are being treated as AFOs, or assaults on federal officers. The source added that Martinez and Santos Ruiz are being prosecuted under Title 18, U.S. Code, Sections 111(a) and (b), which make it a federal crime to forcibly assault, resist or impede a federal officer while that officer is performing official duties. In the DHS release, officials noted that the scene became "increasingly violent as more domestic terrorists gathered and began throwing smoke, gas, rocks, and bottles at DHS law enforcement.” "Another domestic terrorist was arrested for assaulting CBP at the scene," the statement added. "Following JB Prtizker’s refusal to allow local police to help secure the scene, Secretary Noem has deployed special operations teams to restore law and order.” Two suspects were arrested in similar incidents in Chicagoland on Friday. The suspects, Miguel Escareno De Loera and Widman Osberto Lopez-Funes, were both accused of weaponizing their vehicles in "deliberate attempts to ram and injure" ICE officers, according to officials. NewsMax: Stephen Miller: Ore. Judge OK’s ‘Organized Terrorist Attack’
NewsMax [10/5/2025 12:36 PM, Eric Mack, 4779K] reports an Oregon judge blocking the deployment of the National Guard to Portland, Oregon, represents not just judicial overreach against the authority of the president, but also material support of "an organized terrorist attack," according to White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller. "Legal insurrection," Miller wrote on X, denouncing U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut’s temporary block on deploying the National Guard in Portland because of local leftist leaders’ lawsuit against the Trump administration. "The President is the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, not an Oregon judge. "Portland and Oregon law enforcement, at the direction of local leaders, have refused to aid ICE officers facing relentless terrorist assault and threats to life. (There are more local law enforcement officers in Oregon than there are guns and badges in the FBI nationwide). "This is an organized terrorist attack on the federal government and its officers, and the deployment of troops is an absolute necessity to defend our personnel, our laws, our government, public order and the Republic itself.” Immergut, appointed by President Donald Trump during his first term, issued the order pending further arguments in the leftist obstructionists’ lawsuit. She claimed the anti-ICE activity didn’t justify the use of federalized forces. "This country has a longstanding and foundational tradition of resistance to government overreach, especially in the form of military intrusion into civil affairs," Immergut wrote. "This historical tradition boils down to a simple proposition: this is a nation of Constitutional law, not martial law.” The Trump administration late Saturday filed a notice of appeal to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. "President Trump exercised his lawful authority to protect federal assets and personnel in Portland following violent riots and attacks on law enforcement — we expect to be vindicated by a higher court," White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson wrote in a statement after the ruling.
Daily Caller: Chicago Police Told Not To Help Border Patrol Agents In Distress
Daily Caller [10/5/2025 6:18 PM, Chris Butler, 985K] reports Chicago Police officers were ordered not to help Border Patrol agents Saturday after they faced an angry crowd, according to Fox News reporter Bill Melugin, who posted the news on X. "Chicago police officers were instructed by their Chief of Patrol to NOT respond to Border Patrol agents call for help yesterday after they were reportedly surrounded by a large crowd of protesters following a ramming incident & shooting of an armed woman," Melugin wrote. Melugin attached a screenshot of what he said was a Chicago Police Department (CPD) computer-aided dispatch (CAD). The CAD referred to an unnamed caller who identified him or herself as a member of the Border Patrol. "Caller is 1 of approx 30 armed border patrol agents (ice) who are being surrounded by a large crowd of people requesting cpd," the CPD said. As reported Saturday, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Saturday that Border Patrol agents in Chicago were "attacked and rammed by vehicles and boxed in by 10 cars" and "forced" to open fire on an armed woman. No law enforcement officers were seriously harmed during the incident, according to authorities. The agency condemned the apparent use of vehicles against law enforcement on Thursday after DHS said "illegal aliens" targeted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers with cars during two separate incidents in Chicago.
New York Post: Chicago police ordered to ignore border patrol agents’ plea for help while surrounded by angry mob of protesters
New York Post [10/5/2025 6:51 PM, Chris Nesi, 43962K] reports Chicago police officers en route to help federal agents who were being surrounded and menaced by an angry mob of ICE protesters were seemingly ordered by their chief of patrol to stand down and not provide assistance, stunning dispatch audio and internal message reveal. The group of agents was conducting a routine patrol in the city’s South Side on Saturday, "when they were attacked and rammed by vehicles and boxed in by 10 cars," the Department of Homeland Security said. The agents were on patrol about 15 miles from the anti-ICE protests that had been simmering for several days outside the ICE processing center in the Chicago suburb of Broadview when the attack began. Once they attempted to flee their trapped vehicle, a woman — later found to be toting a semi-automatic weapon — attempted to run the officers down, but was shot by police. Local cops were initially readied to help the agents, but were ordered to stand down by the chief of patrol, according to shocking dispatch audio transmissions. "Younger male Hispanic wearing all black … wanted for the hit and run, this guy fled from the scene," a female dispatcher blares in response to a call for help by the surrounded ICE agents on audio shared by ExxAlerts. "When the offending vehicle crashed, they ran the federal agent off the road, they fled on foot westbound.” A male voice then comes on the radio channel, telling the dispatcher to direct officers to head to the scene and "stay put" a few blocks away and await further instruction, which she relays. A few seconds later, the male voice is heard again, saying tersely: "Per the chief of patrol: clear everybody out, we’re not responding over there.” The female dispatcher then tells officers on the way to the distress call, "per the chief of patrol, all units clear out from there, we’re not sending anybody out to that location.” A male officer responds over the sound of sirens wailing in the background, saying, "We’re going to clear out as soon as we can, we’re like blocked in over here so we’re going to do the best we can to get out of here as soon as we can.” An internal department memo sent to Chicago cops and obtained by Fox News confirms the shocking reversal. "PLEASE CHIEF OF PATROL NO UNITS WILL RESPOND TO THIS AS RELATED FROM 04-Oc5-2025/12:34:44…CALLER IS 1 OF APPROX 30 ARMED PATROL AGENTS (ICE) WHO ARE BEING SURROUNDED BY A LARGE CROWD OF PEOPLE REQUESTING CPD," the dispatch message read. The Chicago Police Department disputed the claims, saying its officers were on the scene. "To clarify misinformation currently circulating, CPD officers did in fact respond to the shooting scene involving federal authorities on Saturday to maintain public safety and traffic control," the department said in a statement to Fox. "The Chicago Police Department will always respond to anyone who is being attacked or is under the threat of physical harm," the department added. "For incidents involving federal immigration enforcement, CPD supervisors will respond to the scene and determine the appropriate course of action in accordance with City law.”
FOX News: Chicago police sources blast department’s response after officers were told not to help fed agents: ‘Cover their a--’
FOX News [10/5/2025 6:48 PM, Greg Wehner, 40019K] reports two longtime, ranking Chicago police sources sharply rejected the department’s assertion that officers responded to calls for help from ICE agents who were rammed and surrounded by protesters on Saturday, telling Fox News the official statement is, in their words, "COVER THEIR A-- BULLS--T!!" Their comments come as Fox News obtained an internal dispatch revealing that Chicago police officers were ordered by their chief of patrol not to respond after Border Patrol agents called for help, saying they were boxed in and surrounded following a ramming incident outside the city, according to multiple federal and Chicago law enforcement sources. Fox News reviewed the computer-aided dispatch message sent to Chicago police officers by their chief of patrol. The message instructed officers not to respond to a Saturday morning ramming on the southwest side of the city in which an armed woman was shot and agents were boxed in and surrounded. On Saturday morning, federal agents were rammed and trapped by 10 vehicles, where anti-ICE crowds had gathered for days. Nearly a dozen people were arrested. In a statement Sunday, the Chicago Police Department disputed claims that officers failed to respond, saying they were on scene to manage safety and document the incident. "To clarify misinformation currently circulating, CPD officers did in fact respond to the shooting scene involving federal authorities on Saturday to maintain public safety and traffic control," the department said. CPD added that federal authorities are leading the investigation into the shooting, but that officers were present to ensure safety. Later that afternoon, police also responded to a separate call involving two hit-and-run crashes affecting federal personnel, the department said. "The Chicago Police Department will always respond to anyone who is being attacked or is under the threat of physical harm," the department said. "For incidents involving federal immigration enforcement, CPD supervisors will respond to the scene and determine the appropriate course of action in accordance with City law." But two senior Chicago police sources told Fox News the department’s statement was false — and that internal communications tell a very different story. One ranking source told Fox News that the Chicago Police Department’s statement is "not true," pointing to "legit" dispatch audio. The second ranking police department source told Fox News, "Their statement is COVER THEIR A- - BULLS- -T!! The IRT team was called off while they were en route to handle the shooting—the ETs were told to disregard." One of the drivers accused of ramming into the law enforcement vehicle was armed with a semi-automatic weapon, according to DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, who also said officers were unable to move and "were forced to deploy their weapons and fire defensive shots at an armed U.S. citizen." The armed woman, a U.S. citizen identified as Marimar Martinez, was named in a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) intelligence bulletin, DHS wrote in a statement. She allegedly doxxed agents and posted online, "Hey to all my gang let’s f--- those motherf------ up, don’t let them take anyone." McLaughlin said no law enforcement officers were seriously injured during the incident, adding that the woman involved drove herself to the hospital to get care for wounds.
FOX News: National police union calls Chicago’s refusal to help ICE agents ‘shocking’ violation of duty
FOX News [10/5/2025 9:57 PM, Greg Wehner, 40019K] reports the nation’s largest police union condemned reports that Chicago officers were told not to help ICE agents surrounded by protesters, calling it "shocking" and a violation of law enforcement’s duty to protect fellow officers in danger. Presidents of the National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and Illinois State FOP expressed shock at reports that Chicago’s chief of patrol directed officers not to assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents as they were surrounded by protesters on Saturday. "Details are still emerging, but it appears that officers from the Chicago Police Department were ordered not to assist a group of ICE agents while they were physically threatened by what appeared to be an angry mob," said National FOP President Patrick Yoes in a press release. "Let me be clear, both the National FOP and the Illinois FOP believe that when an officer calls for assistance, you answer, no matter what.” Yoes and Illinois State FOP President Chris Southwood said the directive violated the most basic principle of law enforcement — officers helping other officers in danger. They cited the Illinois Trust Act, which limits local police involvement in immigration enforcement, and said it is contributing to a breakdown between local and federal law enforcement, particularly in sanctuary cities like Chicago. The FOP also cited Department of Homeland Security data showing ICE agents have faced a 1,000% increase in violence since the start of the year. Southwood called the alleged order a dangerous precedent for all law enforcement officers. "The number one unwritten rule in law enforcement is that we respond to any calls from officers in distress," Southwood said. "What would have happened if the local police were facing threats and nearby federal officers were told not to assist? Whether you agree about immigration enforcement or not, when a law enforcement officer is in trouble, nothing should stand in the way of fellow officers rendering assistance.” Yoes echoed Southwood, stressing that it is more important than ever for police officers to band together to protect their brothers and sisters who wear the badge. "We at the National FOP, as well as our members at the Illinois FOP, condemn these actions and urge Chicago officials to ensure that any law enforcement officer needing assistance is guaranteed that their brothers and sisters in law enforcement respond expeditiously," Yoes said. Their comments followed Fox News’ report revealing that Chicago police officers were ordered by their chief of patrol not to respond after Border Patrol agents called for help, saying they were boxed in and surrounded following a ramming incident outside the city, according to multiple federal and Chicago law enforcement sources. Fox News reviewed the computer-aided dispatch message sent to Chicago police officers by their chief of patrol. It instructed officers not to respond to a Saturday morning ramming incident on the southwest side of the city in which an armed woman was shot and agents were boxed in and surrounded. FOX News: Portland police chief touts ‘crowd support’ approach as ICE facility faces ongoing violence
FOX News [10/5/2025 8:28 PM, Greg Wehner, 40019K] reports Portland Police Chief Bob Day defended his department’s reforms and "crowd support" policing even as federal agents faced violent anti-ICE protesters without help, after city leaders ordered police not to respond. Last week, Cammila Wamsley, director of Portland’s ICE office, said the facility has endured more than 100 straight nights of violence, with Portland police largely absent under direction from the mayor and city council. "It’s frustrating for us to watch people be attacked on the street and know that we don’t have the authority to be able to really step in unless there’s some nexus to federal law," Wamsley said. She added that nightly protests have escalated beyond changes and signs, with bottle rockets striking the ICE building, rocks shattering windows, lasers targeting officers’ eyes and barricades blocking vehicles. Despite these accounts, Day offered a very different picture in an opinion piece published by The Oregonian on Sunday, arguing that national media coverage of Portland and its police paint a misleading and outdated picture. Day said he is "deeply proud" of how Portlanders show up for one another continuously, and equally proud of his police department. "Unfortunately, national portrayals often distort reality. Portland is 145 square miles, yet one city block has drawn outsized attention in news cycles. Viral clips — sometimes months or years old — paint a picture that is not consistent with the Portland we see every day," Day wrote. "While this is frustrating, we are focused on what matters: keeping Portlanders safe.” Day said the department and its partners have reduced violent crime by 17% and successfully facilitated numerous peaceful protests as part of the city’s commitment to free speech. Regarding protests at the federal building, Day said his officers are making arrests and pursuing prosecutions. "It’s important to note that the Federal Protective Service secures the building itself, while Portland Police manages the surrounding neighborhoods," he said. "Recently, we have seen people with varying viewpoints come to the area with the intent to engage in violence and we are investigating several assaults; violence of any kind is unacceptable – we have and will continue to make arrests and pursue prosecutions. Free speech does not include freedom to commit crimes.” "There are also those who want to draw parallels about current events and 2020, when 100-plus nights of protests deeply impacted the city and Portland Police. But this isn’t 2020 for many reasons," Day continued. "Since I became chief two years ago, I have witnessed significant change. Reforms in use of force, crowd management and accountability have reshaped how we operate. "As we have shown with the numerous massive protests that have occurred this year, large demonstrations can occur peacefully, and when disturbances arise, we take targeted action that can quickly restore order," he continued. "Five years ago, some city and state leadership left the police bureau isolated. Today, that has changed. The bureau is part of a united statewide effort, backed by strong leadership from the mayor, city council, city administrator, governor, our congressional delegation and fellow Portlanders.” [Editorial note: consult video at source link]
New York Post: Trump to send 400 Texas National Guard troops to Illinois as anti-ICE protests continue to rage: Pritzker
New York Post [10/6/2025 12:40 AM, Anna Young, 43962K] reports President Trump is deploying 400 Texas National Guard troops to Illinois, Oregon, and other states as swarms of anti-ICE protesters continue to clash with federal agents, Gov. JB Pritzker said Sunday night. The Illinois Democrat blasted Trump’s "invasion" hours after the president mobilized 300 California National Guard members to Portland, where unrest has raged for over 100 consecutive days outside an immigration detention center — a scene that has been playing out in Chicago since September. Pritzker said the plan defies his wishes, adding that federal officials haven’t reached out to coordinate or discuss the deployment. "We must now start calling this what it is: Trump’s Invasion," the governor said in a post on X, encouraging "every American to speak up and help stop this madness.” "It started with federal agents, it will soon include deploying federalized members of the Illinois National Guard against our wishes, and it will not involve sending in another state’s military troops. I call on [Texas] Governor Abbott to immediately withdraw any support for this decision and refuse to coordinate.” Pritzker condemned Trump for wanting to send active-duty troops to a "sovereign state" without permission, accusing the president of using the National Guard as "political props.” The White House did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment. A violent wave of anti-ICE protests has intensified in the Windy City since US Immigration and Customs Enforcement launched "Operation Midway Blitz" last month, an initiative aimed at targeting criminal illegal immigrants who feds say flocked to Chicago to seek protection under the state’s "sanctuary policies.” The immigration enforcement operation has drawn pushback from Pritzker, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and other prominent local Democrats. But despite their objection, demonstrations have escalated in recent days, with protesters using vehicles to attack ICE agents in the Chicago area, according to the Department of Homeland Security, which said agents were targeted twice in such a manner one day earlier this week. US Border Patrol agents patrolling Chicago’s South Side on Saturday also opened fire and wounded a woman — later found to be armed — after an angry mob attempted to attack the federal officers. The agents were located about 15 miles from an ICE processing center in the Chicago suburb of Broadview, a site that’s been a hotbed of civil unrest, when the ambush began. More than a dozen protesters have been arrested near the ICE facility since Friday, according to Fox News. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem — who touched down in Illinois Friday morning — called Chicago a "war zone" during an interview Sunday with "Fox & Friends Weekend.” Noem also alleged that Chicago has been blocking federal law enforcement, including Border Patrol and ICE officers, from using public restrooms in the city. On Friday, she was denied entry into a Broadview government building after asking to use the restroom, she said.

AP: Using helicopters and chemical agents, immigration agents become increasingly aggressive in Chicago
AP [10/5/2025 6:31 PM, Sophia Tareen, 37974K] reports storming an apartment complex by helicopter as families slept. Deploying chemical agents near a public school. Handcuffing a Chicago City Council member at a hospital. Activists, residents and leaders say increasingly combative tactics used by federal immigration agents are sparking violence and fueling neighborhood tensions in the nation’s third-largest city. "They are the ones that are making it a war zone," Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker said Sunday on CNN. "They fire tear gas and smoke grenades, and they make it look like it’s a war zone.” More than 1,000 immigrants have been arrested since an immigration crackdown started last month in the Chicago area. The Trump administration has also vowed to deploy National Guard troops in its agenda to boost deportations. But U.S. citizens, immigrants with legal status and children have been among those detained in increasingly brazen and aggressive encounters which pop up daily across neighborhoods in the city of 2.7 million and its many suburbs. Activists and residents were taking stock Sunday at an apartment building on Chicago’s South Side where the Department of Homeland Security said 37 immigrants were arrested recently in an operation that’s raised calls for investigation by Pritzker. While federal agents have mostly focused on immigrant-heavy and Latino enclaves, the operation early Tuesday unfolded in the largely Black South Shore neighborhood that’s had a small influx of migrants resettled in Chicago while seeking asylum. Agents used unmarked trucks and a helicopter to surround the five-story apartment building. NewsNation, which was invited to observe the operation, reported agents "rappelled from Black Hawk helicopters." Agents then went door to door, woke up residents and used zip ties to restrain them. Residents and the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, which canvassed the area, said those who were zip tied included children and U.S. citizens. Rodrick Johnson, a U.S. citizen briefly detained, said agents broke through his door and placed him in zip ties. "I asked if they had a warrant, and I asked for a lawyer," the 67-year-old told the Chicago Sun-Times. "They never brought one.” Dixon Romero with Southside Together, an organization that’s also been helping residents, said doors were knocked off the hinges. "Everyone we talked to didn’t feel safe," he said. "This is not normal. It’s not OK. It’s not right.” DHS officials said they were targeting connections to the Tren de Aragua gang. Without offering details on arrests or addressing how children were treated, DHS said "some of the targeted subjects are believed to be involved in drug trafficking and distribution, weapons crimes, and immigration violators.” Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Saturday posted heavily edited video clips of the operation to X showing agents blasting through doors, helicopters and adults in zip ties, but music played over most of the roughly 1 minute video. Noem has defended the aggressive tactics, calling the mission treacherous to agents and alleging threats on officers’ lives. "It’s an extremely dangerous situation," she said Sunday on the "Fox & Friends" weekend show.

New York Times: Pritzker Says Federal Agents Are Trying to Make Chicago a ‘War Zone’
New York Times [10/5/2025 1:02 PM, Sonia A. Rao, 153395K-26, 143795K] reports Gov. JB Pritzker of Illinois blasted recent federal immigration enforcement efforts in Chicago on Sunday, dismissing assertions by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem that the city was a “war zone” and blaming federal agents for escalating a sense of conflict. “The secretary doesn’t know what she’s talking about,” the governor said in an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” adding that Chicagoans were “booing her on the street.” Mr. Pritzker singled out a late-night Border Patrol raid last week at an apartment building on Chicago’s South Side, when video taken by bystanders showed residents of the building restrained with zip ties. Federal agents were “just picking up people who are brown and Black and then checking their credentials,” Mr. Pritzker said. He added: “They are the ones that are making it a war zone. They need to get out of Chicago if they’re not going to focus on the worst of the worst, which is what the president said they were going to do.” Mr. Pritzker suggested that the Trump administration, which plans to send 300 National Guard troops to Chicago, was intentionally heightening tensions. The administration wants to “create the war zone so they can send in even more troops,” he said. Mr. Pritzker said he had directed state agencies to investigate what happened at the apartment building, citing reports of “children who were zip-tied and held, some of them nearly naked” and “elderly people being thrown into a U-Haul for three hours and detained.” Mr. Pritzker added he believed that some of the people were U.S. citizens. “What kind of a country are we living in?” he said. The governor also said he wanted to know more about an episode in Chicago on Saturday when a federal agent shot and wounded a motorist who, according to federal officials, had rammed and boxed-in a law enforcement vehicle.

Washington Examiner: Pritzker says Trump wants ‘mayhem’ in Chicago to justify deploying more troops
Washington Examiner [10/5/2025 11:45 AM, David Zimmermann, 1563K] reports Gov. JB Pritzker (D-IL) made the case on Sunday that President Donald Trump wants "mayhem on the ground" in Chicago to justify sending in more military troops to crack down on violence. Since last month, federal authorities have targeted illegal immigrants in Chicago as part of "Operation Midway Blitz." The increased federal presence has prompted violent protests to break out, forcing Trump to activate the National Guard in the blue state. Pritzker continues to oppose federal intervention in Chicago. "Now they’re claiming they need 300 of Illinois’s National Guard. Well, we didn’t need them before they showed up," Pritzker said. "What they ought to do is allow us to work with FBI, ATF, DEA, who are civilian law enforcement and understand how to target and take out the bad guys." Numerous violent clashes between protesters and immigration agents have taken place in recent weeks, particularly concentrated in the Chicago suburb of Broadview, where an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility is located. On Saturday, several officers were rammed and boxed in by 10 vehicles. One of the drivers was a woman armed with a semi-automatic weapon, prompting the officers to open fire in defense. The armed assailant, identified as Marimar Martinez, was treated for her gunshot wound and later taken into FBI custody. She has a history of doxxing federal agents. The Department of Homeland Security denounced the attack, with spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin warning "domestic terrorists" who attack law enforcement "will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law." Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended federal agents for their actions in Chicago, which she described as a "war zone," and claimed the city’s residents welcomed their presence. In response, Pritzker said Noem "doesn’t know what she’s talking about" and argued federal agents are being met with boos instead of applause on the city streets.
Axios: Chicago’s chaotic weekend with federal clashes
Axios [10/5/2025 7:29 PM, Carrie Shepherd, 14595K] reports Chicago experienced a chaotic — and violent — weekend of clashes between federal law enforcement and protesters, prompting President Trump to call up 300 National Guard members in Illinois on Saturday. Gov. JB Pritzker said the Trump administration’s War Department presented him with an ultimatum earlier in the day: "‘call up your troops, or we will.’" A man and woman allegedly used their vehicles Saturday morning to strike a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent’s car and box in other agents’ vehicles near 39th Street and South Kedzie Avenue, according to a complaint by the U.S. Department of Justice. One of the agents then fired shots and struck one of the drivers, Marimar Martinez, who was later taken to a hospital and released. The feds charged Martinez and Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz on Sunday with forcibly assaulting, impeding, and interfering with a federal law enforcement officer. Both remain in custody pending federal court appearances. The clash in Brighton Park capped a week that included a raid at an apartment building in South Shore and a federal agent handcuffing Ald. Jessie Fuentes. Federal agents cuffed Fuentes on Friday after the alder demanded that agents show her a warrant for a hospital patient they were trying to detain. Mayor Brandon Johnson joined 37 alders in condemning that incident. After a raid on a South Shore apartment building on Tuesday night, photos of trashed rooms and allegations of agents tying residents’ hands, including children, with zip ties led Pritzker to call on state agencies to investigate the incidents. Department of Homeland Security told ABC News the building was targeted because it’s "frequented" by members of a Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua. "Some of the targeted subjects are believed to be involved in drug trafficking and distribution, weapons crimes, and immigration violators." "They’re raiding neighborhoods where, instead of going after the bad guys, they’re just picking up people who are brown and Black and then checking their credentials, ‘Are you a U.S. citizen?’ I don’t know about you, but I don’t carry around papers that say I’m a U.S. citizen," Pritzker said Sunday on "State of the Union." "They are the ones that are making it a war zone. They need to get out of Chicago if they’re not going to focus on the worst of the worst, which is what the president said they were going to do. They need to get the heck out."

Wall Street Journal: Trump Authorizes Sending National Guard to Illinois
Wall Street Journal [10/5/2025 10:41 AM, John McCormick, Joe Barrett and Jess Bravin, 646K] reports President Trump pressed ahead Saturday with plans to mobilize federal troops in cities led by Democrats, this time in Illinois, even as a federal judge in Oregon issued a sharply worded order blocking the administration from sending National Guard members to Portland. Trump plans to federalize 300 members of the Illinois National Guard over the objection of Gov. JB Pritzker, the latest development in a long-simmering confrontation between the White House and Democratic governors over crime and immigration policy. “Amidst ongoing violent riots and lawlessness, that local leaders like Pritzker have refused to step in to quell, President Trump has authorized 300 national guardsmen to protect federal officers and assets,” Abigail Jackson, a White House spokeswoman, said Saturday evening. The Illinois governor said earlier Saturday the Trump administration demanded that he call in the Illinois National Guard, or the Defense Department would federalize 300 members. “It is absolutely outrageous and un-American to demand a governor send military troops within our own borders and against our will,” Pritzker said. Trump has increasingly used the military on U.S. soil either to participate in what he has called a crime crackdown—or protect immigration buildings and agents from Americans who protest against his policies. Pritzker and Chicago officials have repeatedly touted violent-crime reduction in recent years. On Saturday, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said vehicles carrying federal agents doing a routine patrol in Chicago were rammed and trapped by about 10 vehicles. Agents fired on a woman in one of those vehicles who was carrying a semiautomatic weapon, said Tricia McLaughlin, a Homeland Security spokeswoman. The woman took herself to a hospital, and no federal officers were seriously injured, McLaughlin said. An activist group said that the federal agents had crashed into the vehicle, resulting in a multicar accident. They said the agents fired five shots at the vehicle.
NPR/ABC News/CNN: Trump federalizes the National Guard in Chicago, while troops arrive in Oregon
NPR [10/5/2025 5:49 PM, Joe Hernandez, 34837K] reports Portland and Chicago are preparing for the possibility that National Guard members will be deployed to their streets, as President Trump moves ahead with his plan to send troops to Democratic-run U.S. cities that he says require help to control crime and protect federal law enforcement officers. On Saturday, the White House said Trump "authorized" the deployment of 300 Illinois National Guard members, after vowing for weeks to send federal forces into Chicago. Also over the weekend, a federal judge in Oregon temporarily blocked the administration’s plan to deploy the Oregon National Guard to Portland, though troops have arrived in Oregon from California. Guard members will be used to protect federal property as well as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Federal Protective Service agents and other federal employees, according to a copy of a federal memo viewed by NPR. They will be sent to places where there are "violent demonstrations" in the state or where they are likely to occur based on "current threat assessments," the memo said. In a statement, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said that Trump had activated the troops "[a]midst ongoing violent riots and lawlessness" in Chicago in order to "protect federal officers and assets," WBEZ reported. Trump has said National Guard deployments are in an effort to fight crime, despite violent crime being down in Chicago and other cities. On Saturday, Border Patrol agents shot a woman in Chicago. Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, said the woman was one of a group of drivers who rammed federal agents with their vehicles. The woman, Marimar Martinez, was released from the hospital and is now in the custody of the FBI, DHS said in a statement. No agents were seriously injured, according to McLaughlin. ABC News [10/5/2025 6:10 PM, Chris Boccia, 27036K] reports U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents on Saturday shot and wounded a woman they alleged was part of a convoy of protesters that rammed their vehicles during an "ambush.” Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Border Patrol agents opened fire on the woman in self-defense, alleging she was armed with a semiautomatic weapon and was driving one of three vehicles that "cornered" and rammed the CBP agents’ vehicles. Describing the incident as "really strange," Noem alleged that before the shooting, a caravan of 10 vehicles was following the CBP agents and officers through the streets of Chicago. "They had followed them and gotten them cornered, pinned them down and then our agents, when getting out of their cars, they tried to run them over and had semiautomatic handguns on them to where our agents had to protect themselves and shots were fired and an individual ended up in the hospital that was attacking these officers," Noem said in a statement on Sunday. CNN [10/5/2025 7:02 PM, Karina Tsui, Michelle Watson and Zoe Sottile, 662K] reports Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker accused Trump’s administration of escalating tensions and provoking people to react. "They’re raiding neighborhoods where, instead of going after the bad guys, they’re just picking up people who are brown and Black and then checking their credentials," Pritzker said on CNN’s "State of the Union."
New York Times: Judge Again Blocks Guard Deployment as Trump Expands His Targets
New York Times [10/6/2025 1:38 AM, Shawn Hubler, Anna Griffin and Eric Schmitt, 330K] reports a federal judge on Sunday night blocked the Trump administration from deploying hundreds of out-of-state National Guard troops to Oregon, even as President Trump turned to the Texas guard in a widening hunt for military forces to send to Democratic cities. The Trump administration had tried to send hundreds of California National Guard troops to Portland, Ore., while mustering hundreds more from Texas, despite a stern ruling from Judge Karin Immergut of U.S. District Court in Oregon just Saturday that sought to block military forces. Judge Immergut, an appointee of President Trump, called an emergency hearing Sunday, then broadened her restraining order to cover “the relocation, federalization or deployment of members of the National Guard of any state or the District of Columbia in the state of Oregon,” telling Justice Department lawyers that the president was “in direct contravention” of her order. The blizzard of moves by the Trump administration, from Texas to California, Illinois to Oregon, has left governors and the courts scrambling to keep pace. First, the administration tried to sidestep Judge Immergut by turning to California. Then the president ordered as many as 400 members of the Texas National Guard to deploy for “federal protection missions” in Portland, Chicago and potentially other cities, according to a letter released by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, on Sunday night. “We must now start calling this what it is: Trump’s Invasion,” Gov. JB Pritzker of Illinois, a Democrat, said in a statement. Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas fully backed the deployment. “You can either fully enforce protection for federal employees or get out of the way and let Texas Guard do it,” he wrote on social media. “No Guard can match the training, skill, and expertise of the Texas National Guard.” The president had said the troops were needed to respond to demonstrations at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in Portland and another in suburban Chicago. But Judge Immergut wrote on Saturday that the protests in Portland, which have been generally small, “were not significantly violent or disruptive” and that she expected a trial court to agree with the state’s contention that the president had exceeded his constitutional authority. The Trump administration quickly appealed. Then, in a pivot that outraged both states, the president ordered 200 members of the California National Guard who had been commandeered earlier this summer and sent to Los Angeles as part of another contested federal deployment to travel to Oregon support federal law enforcement. The decision to essentially substitute California troops for the thwarted Oregon deployment drew vehement criticism from Gov. Gavin Newsom of California and Gov. Tina Kotek of Oregon, both Democrats, who charged that the use of the out-of-state troops without their consent was an abuse of power and illegal.

Washington Times: Trump blasts federal judge over Portland troop block; Justice Department appeals ruling
Washington Times [10/5/2025 1:55 PM, Seth McLaughlin, 964K] reports President Trump is sharply criticizing a federal judge who temporarily blocked his plan to deploy National Guard troops to Portland, Oregon, in response to immigration enforcement protests. “That judge ought to be ashamed of himself,” Mr. Trump told reporters on Sunday, expressing frustration over the decision. U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut, a Trump appointee, issued the restraining order Saturday after siding with local officials who argued that sending 200 federal troops was unnecessary and potentially inflammatory. In her ruling, Judge Immergut emphasized the importance of constitutional boundaries. “This country has a longstanding and foundational tradition of resistance to government overreach, especially in the form of military intrusion into civil affairs,” she wrote in the 31-page opinion. “This is a nation of constitutional law, not martial law. Defendants have made a range of arguments that, if accepted, risk blurring the line between civil and military federal power — to the detriment of this nation.” She also took issue with Mr. Trump’s description of Portland as “war-ravaged,” calling it “simply untethered to the facts.” The Department of Justice has filed a notice of appeal with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, challenging the judge’s decision.
Reuters/NBC News: Pentagon says it is deploying California National Guard to Portland
Reuters [10/5/2025 6:00 PM, Phil Stewart, 45746K] reports the U.S. military said on Sunday it is reassigning about 200 federalized members of the California National Guard from the Los Angeles area to Portland, Oregon, in a new tactic to fulfill plans announced by President Donald Trump. The announcement followed a ruling by a federal judge late on Saturday that temporarily blocked Trump from deploying 200 Oregon National Guard troops to the city of Portland, citing a lack of evidence that recent protests necessitated the move. "At the direction of the President, approximately 200 federalized members of the California National Guard are being reassigned from duty in the greater Los Angeles area to Portland, Oregon to support U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal personnel performing official duties, including the enforcement of federal law, and to protect federal property," Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a statement. NBC News [10/5/2025 9:18 PM, Alexandra Marquez, 43603K] reports California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Sunday that he would sue the Trump administration after it federalized 300 California National Guard troops and deployed them to Oregon, just one day after a federal judge blocked President Donald Trump’s attempt to deploy Oregon National Guard troops in Portland. "In response to a federal court order that blocked his attempt to federalize the Oregon National Guard, President Trump is deploying 300 California National Guard personnel into Oregon. They are on their way there now," Newsom, a Democrat, said in a statement. "This is a breathtaking abuse of the law and power. The Trump Administration is unapologetically attacking the rule of law itself and putting into action their dangerous words — ignoring court orders and treating judges, even those appointed by the President himself, as political opponents.” In a statement, the White House confirmed the movement of California National Guard troops to Oregon. "President Trump exercised his lawful authority to protect federal assets and personnel in Portland following violent riots and attacks on law enforcement. For once, Gavin Newscum should stand on the side of law-abiding citizens instead of violent criminals destroying Portland and cities across the country," White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said, referring to the California governor with a nickname often used by the president. Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement Sunday that, "At the direction of the President, approximately 200 federalized members of the California National Guard are being reassigned from duty in the greater Los Angeles area to Portland, Oregon to support U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal personnel performing official duties, including the enforcement of federal law, and to protect federal property.” In a statement, Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek, a Democrat, confirmed that California National Guard troops had already arrived in Oregon, saying, "101 federalized California National Guard members arrived in Oregon last night via plane, and it is our understanding that there are more on the way today.”

The Hill: Newsom to sue Trump over National Guard deployment, urges Americans to ‘speak out’
The Hill [10/5/2025 2:40 PM, Max Rego, 12414K] reports California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said Sunday that the Trump administration is deploying 300 of his state’s National Guard troops to Portland, Ore., and he vowed he would sue over the move. On Saturday, a federal judge temporarily blocked the administration’s deployment of 200 Oregon National Guard troops to the state’s largest city. U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut, a Trump appointee, granted state and local officials a temporary restraining order against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s authorization to federalize the Oregon guard troops. "This is a breathtaking abuse of the law and power," Newsom said in a release. "The Trump Administration is unapologetically attacking the rule of the law itself and putting into action their dangerous words — ignoring court orders and treating judges, even those appointed by the President himself, as political opponents." Last month, President Trump ordered Hegseth to deploy guard troops to Portland amid protests at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in the city. The president, in a post on his Truth Social platform announcing the order, claimed the building was "under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists." Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek, state Attorney General Dan Rayfield and Portland Mayor Keith Wilson, all Democrats, have pushed back against Trump’s assertions. In the restraining order request filed on Sept. 28, the plaintiffs called the deployment "heavy-handed" and unlawful. This is the second time Trump has federalized the California National Guard against Newsom’s wishes. In June, the president ordered 4,000 troops and roughly 700 Marines to Los Angeles, amid protests against ICE raids in and around the city. In a statement to The Hill, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said the president "exercised his lawful authority to protects federal assets and personnel" in Portland. "For once, Gavin Newscum should stand on the side of law-abiding citizens instead of violent criminals destroying Portland and cities across the country," Jackson added, utilizing the nickname Trump often uses for the California governor.

AP: Democratic governors vow court fight after Trump sends California National Guard members to Oregon
AP [10/5/2025 9:23 PM, Christopher Weber and Jack Brook, 37974K] reports President Donald Trump is sending California National Guard members to Oregon after a judge temporarily blocked his administration from deploying that state’s guard to Portland, and the Democratic governors of both states pledged Sunday to fight the move in court. A Pentagon spokesperson said in a statement that about 200 federalized members of the California National Guard who had been on duty around Los Angeles were being reassigned to Portland. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek said about 100 arrived Saturday and around 100 more were en route Sunday. Kotek said there had been no formal communication with the federal government about the deployment. California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office said about 300 previously federalized California guard members could eventually be deployed. The events in Oregon come a day after Illinois’ governor made a similar announcement about troops in his state being activated. Kotek said the latest move by federal officials is an attempt to circumvent Saturday’s court ruling that blocked deployment of Oregon’s guard members. “The facts on the ground in Oregon haven’t changed,” Kotek said during a news conference Sunday. “There’s no need for military intervention in Oregon. There’s no insurrection in Portland, there’s no threat to national security.” Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield said his state, along with the city of Portland and California, is seeking an amended temporary restraining order against the deployment of any National Guard troops. “What was unlawful yesterday is unlawful today,” Rayfield said. “The judge’s order was not some minor procedural point for the president to work around, like my 14-year-old does when he doesn’t like my answers.” Rayfield added that Oregon “will absolutely not be a party to the president’s attempt to normalize the use of the United States military in our American cities.” Newsom, a Democrat, said in a statement that California personnel were on their way Sunday and called the deployment “a breathtaking abuse of the law and power.” He said these troops were “federalized” and put under the president’s control months ago over his objections, in response to unrest in Los Angeles. “The commander-in-chief is using the U.S. military as a political weapon against American citizens,” Newsom said.

NewsNation: Trump says US hit another boat off Venezuela coast on Saturday
NewsNation [10/5/2025 8:22 PM, Staff, 6811K] reports U.S. forces hit another vessel allegedly carrying illegal drugs off the coast of Venezuela on Saturday evening, President Trump said on Sunday, adding that the U.S. would also start looking at drug trafficking occurring on land. Trump made the comment during a speech at Naval Station Norfolk, next to the Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier. It was not immediately clear if he was referencing a strike announced Friday by U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. That strike, at least the fourth such attack in recent weeks, killed four people. "In recent weeks, the Navy has supported our mission to blow the cartel terrorists the hell out of the water … we did another one last night. Now we just can’t find any," Trump said. "They’re not coming in by sea anymore, so now we’ll have to start looking about the land because they’ll be forced to go by land.” Venezuela’s communications ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but President Nicolas Maduro published a video message on Telegram shortly after Trump’s announcement in which he blasted U.S. aggression against Venezuela. "Our people have never and will never be afraid to defend their right to live and be free," Maduro said, without referencing Trump’s latest comments. "We will be ready to face any scenario.” Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil said earlier on Sunday his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov gave a "full expression of support and solidarity" to Caracas in a phone call between the two. On Saturday, Gil said Maduro had sent a letter to Pope Leo XIV in which he asked for his support to "consolidate peace in Venezuela.” Hegseth told Fox News in an interview broadcast on Sunday he has every authorization needed for the Caribbean strikes.

Reuters: Hegseth says he has every authorization needed for Caribbean strikes
Reuters [10/5/2025 12:00 PM, Staff, 45746K] reports U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said he has every authorization needed for U.S. military strikes on vessels just off the coast of Venezuela allegedly carrying illegal drugs. Hegseth was speaking in a Fox News interview broadcast on Sunday. The United States killed four people in a strike in the Caribbean Sea on Friday, at least the fourth such attack in recent weeks. "We have every authorization needed. These are designated as foreign terrorist organizations," Hegseth said in an interview on Fox News’ "The Sunday Briefing.” He did not provide more details about the authorization. Washington has cited the U.S. Constitution, war powers, designation of drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, the right to self-defense and international law on unlawful combatants as the legal basis for the strikes. Hegseth and President Donald Trump have not provided evidence for claims that the targeted boats were carrying drugs. Trump told Congress last week that he had determined the U.S. to be in "a non-international armed conflict" with drug cartels, without providing any new legal rationale. Critics say the boat strikes are a further effort by Trump to test the scope of his presidential powers. Legal experts have questioned why the military is carrying out these attacks rather than the U.S. Coast Guard, the country’s maritime law agency. "If you’re in our hemisphere, if you’re in the Caribbean, if you’re north of Venezuela and you want to traffic drugs to the United States, you are a legitimate target of the United States military," Hegseth said. Trump on Sunday said the U.S. military buildup in the Caribbean had halted drug trafficking from South America. "There’s no drugs coming into the water. And we’ll look at what phase two is," he told reporters at the White House. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Sunday told his Venezuelan counterpart that the country condemns the U.S. strikes and is concerned about the dangers of potential U.S. escalation in the Caribbean.

Washington Examiner: Pentagon has ‘tremendous confidence’ in intel leading to drug boat strikes, Rubio says
Washington Examiner [10/5/2025 12:25 PM, Anna Giaritelli, 1563K] reports Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the United States’s most recent strike against a Venezuelan boat said to be smuggling drugs to the United States amid concerns from outside the Trump administration. "The Department of War has tremendous confidence in the way they are gathering information. They know who’s on those boats. They know what those boats are doing," Rubio said on Fox News’s Fox News Sunday. "They have the highest confidence in this because of the work that goes into us, because of the tremendous amount of caution they’re taking in deciding who to strike and who not to strike."
Washington Examiner: Trump looks to pivot to land drug trafficking after deadly boat strikes
Washington Examiner [10/5/2025 10:04 PM, Zach LaChance, 1563K] reports President Donald Trump on Sunday hailed the U.S. military’s strikes on suspected drug boats operating in the Caribbean, suggesting they have been so successful that there are "no boats" left. In a speech at a ceremony for the U.S. Navy’s 250th anniversary, Trump claimed the deadly strikes on suspected drug boats coming from Venezuela have been "so good," that "nobody wants to go into the water anymore.” "Sorry to tell you that," Trump told the crowd of sailors. "We just can’t find any [boats].” Trump then said the U.S. military may need to move toward military action on land "because they’ll be forced" to reroute drug smuggling operations due to the strikes. "They’re not coming in by sea any more, so now we’ll have to start looking at the land," he continued. "And let me tell you right now, that’s not going to work out well for them either.” The assessment from Trump comes after he told the Washington Examiner last week that his administration was going to "look very seriously at cartels coming by land.” Days later, he declared in a memorandum that the United States is in a "non-international armed conflict" with drug cartels. Though Trump did not name any of the cartels, all of the strikes so far have targeted small vessels coming from Venezuela, which is heavily influenced by Cartel de los Soles and Tren de Aragua. It is unclear what military action would look like on land, as both Cartel de los Soles and TdA operate in other countries besides Venezuela. Trump has, however, expressed a desire for the U.S. military to enter Mexican territory to fight the cartels operating there, though that plan ended up being met with stiff resistance from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Despite the apparent pivot from Trump in how next to take on cartels he has designated as terrorist organizations since retaking office, he said on Sunday that another strike on a drug smuggling vessel was conducted "last night.” The last such strike to be publicly announced was on Friday, which resulted in the deaths of four "male narco-terrorists," according to War Secretary Pete Hegseth. In that same announcement, Hegseth vowed to continue the sea strikes "until the attacks on the American people are over.”
Axios: How the U.S. bypassed rules to rush deportees to Africa
Axios [10/5/2025 7:13 AM, Brittany Gibson, 14595K] reports the Trump administration’s rush to quickly deport immigrants with criminal records has led U.S. officials to send several men to prisons in Africa even though their home countries would have taken them back, Axios has learned. President Trump’s team has justified deportations to prisons in Eswatini and South Sudan by claiming that no other countries — including the immigrants’ homelands — would accept criminals ousted from the U.S. But foreign government officials, immigration attorneys and court filings indicate that wasn’t the case with at least two groups of deportees this summer that included a dozen migrants from Mexico, Vietnam and Jamaica who’d been convicted of crimes such as murder and robbery. It’s unclear whether U.S. officials gave those deportees’ home countries a chance to accept the return of their citizens — as has long been required by law — before sending them to the prisons in Africa. Unlike the hundreds of Venezuelans the Department of Homeland Security deported to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador — or the dozens of asylum seekers sent to Costa Rica and Panama — the two groups of deportees whose cases were examined by Axios had judges’ orders to be removed from the U.S. For such deportees, U.S. law requires judges to designate a preferred country or the deportee’s country of origin as the priority destination. A second option is for the deportee to be sent to a country with which he or she has ties. Deportation to a "third country" unfamiliar to the deportee is only a last resort. "The Trump administration has just skipped all of those steps" and simply moved immigrants "to a country that’s willing to accept them — and that, we think, is a clear violation of statute," said Trina Realmuto, an attorney leading a class-action lawsuit against "third country" deportations.
Bloomberg Law: False Claims Act Expands Scope to Immigration in Federal Work
Bloomberg Law [10/6/2025 4:30 AM, Jenny Sugar and Tanisha Palvia, 19085K] reports the False Claims Act has long been used by the Department of Justice to combat health care and government contract fraud. Now the department is using the FCA for immigration enforcement. Two recent FCA civil settlements with federal government contractors totaling millions of dollars, over allegations of immigrants, called “unauthorized aliens” by DOJ, performing work billed to the government, serve as a warning. DOJ announced on Sept. 18 that Bayonne Drydock and Repair Corp. agreed to pay more than $4 million to settle FCA allegations that project subcontractors owned by the company’s contract and risk manager employed “unauthorized aliens.” DOJ alleged that these employees worked on ship contracts in violation of the E-Verify provision of the Federal Acquisition Regulations. The manager pleaded guilty to knowingly hiring and continuing to employ “unauthorized aliens” in violation of 8 U.S.C. Sections 1324a(a)(2) and (f)(1) and 18 U.S.C. Section 2. Notably, neither the manager’s guilty plea nor the company’s cooperation with the investigation was enough to save it from the $4 million settlement. In January, DOJ announced a similar settlement with Bollinger Shipyard LLC. Bollinger paid more than $1 million to settle claims it had failed to verify certain workers’ employment eligibility. These settlements didn’t definitively end the matters; DOJ reserved the power to pursue additional criminal charges and other remedies. FCA actions like these can also result in debarment from future federal contracts and treble damages.
NewsMax: Speaker Johnson Blames Dems as Shutdown in 5th Day
NewsMax [10/5/2025 3:22 PM, Sandy Fitzgerald, 4779K] reports House Speaker Mike Johnson on Sunday said Senate Democrats are responsible for the government shutdown and criticized their refusal to back a short-term Republican spending bill. Appearing on CBS’s "Face the Nation," Johnson said the House passed a bipartisan continuing resolution to fund the government for seven weeks, but said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer blocked it for political reasons. "Real people are being adversely affected around the country in very substantial ways," Johnson said. "I pray that more Democrats in the Senate will come to their senses and do the right thing.” Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, dismissed Democrats’ push to tie the standoff to extending Affordable Care Act subsidies as a "red herring," saying the debate can come later. He argued the subsidies are riddled with "fraud, waste, and abuse" and require reform. "There’s probably 400 different ideas on how to fix that, so we need a little time to do it," Johnson said. "We’re not saying we won’t negotiate it. We’re saying turn the lights back on in Congress.” He warned that the shutdown has already stalled health programs for veterans and seniors, frozen FEMA’s flood insurance program in the middle of hurricane season, and halted WIC benefits for women and children. "Get troops paid, TSA agents and Border Patrol agents paid who are trying to protect us," Johnson urged. Pressed by moderator Margaret Brennan, Johnson declined to say whether he supports extending the health care tax credits, insisting his role is to build consensus. "I haven’t staked out any position on it yet, because that’s not how this process works," he said. "What I have to do is draw consensus among 435 members of my body.”
FOX News: Democratic senator argues his removal from DHS press conference was ‘wake-up call’
FOX News [10/5/2025 11:38 AM, Hanna Panreck, 40019K] reports Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., said in an interview that he never thought he would be forcibly removed from a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) press conference as he tried to ask DHS secretary Kristi Noem a question in June, arguing it should be a "wake-up call.” "Never would I have imagined that that would have happened — that that would be a response to a question, especially to a senator trying to ask a question," he told The New York Times’ Lulu Garcia Navarro. Padilla was handcuffed and forcibly removed from a June press conference Noem had in Los Angeles after he tried to ask a question of the head of Homeland Security, who was speaking about the anti-ICE riots in the city. The NYT asked Padilla if Noem had apologized to him in their conversation after the incident. Padilla has insisted he wasn’t interrupting the press conference and just wanted to ask a question. "No apology, but honestly not surprised, just given how this administration tends to carry itself," he continued. "I wish I could say it was more substantive or more constructive. She finally did say, ‘Well, I understand you’re asking for more information. What’s your question?’". Padilla said his removal from the press conference should be a wake-up call, arguing it was part of a bigger problem with the Trump administration. "It was clear to me that if that’s how this administration would respond to a senator with a question, imagine not just how they could treat so many other people, but how they are treating so many other people when the cameras are not on. This should be a wake-up call," he told the Times.
New York Times: Kristi Noem Says ICE Will Be ‘All Over’ the Super Bowl
New York Times [10/6/2025 3:20 AM, Derrick Bryson Taylor, 330K] reports Kristi Noem, the secretary of homeland security, gave the clearest indication yet that agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement would attend the Super Bowl in February, where the Latin superstar Bad Bunny is scheduled to headline the halftime show. Asked on Friday by the right-wing podcaster Benny Johnson if there would be “ICE enforcement” at the Super Bowl, Noem replied, “There will be,” adding that federal immigration officers would be “all over” the event. “I have the responsibility for making sure everybody goes to the Super Bowl, has the opportunity to enjoy it and to leave,” Noem said on “The Benny Show.” People should not attend the event, she went on, unless they are “law-abiding Americans who love this country.” Bad Bunny, a Grammy-winning musician who is from Puerto Rico, rose to fame with hits such as “MIA,” “I Like It” and “Me Porto Bonito.” He recently finished a 31-show residency in Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory, saying he chose not to perform in the continental United States because he feared that his fans would become targets of ICE agents. After the N.F.L. announced last week that he would appear at the Super Bowl, which will take place on Feb. 8 in Santa Clara, Calif., far-right commentators complained that Bad Bunny did not sing in English and that he had been openly critical of the Trump administration’s immigration policies. Johnson wrote on social media that Bad Bunny was a “massive Trump hater.” When Johnson suggested in his interview with Noem that the N.F.L. was sending a message to the Trump administration by choosing Bad Bunny to headline the Super Bowl halftime show, Noem replied, “They suck and we’ll win and God will bless us.” Bad Bunny, who hosted the season opener of “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, used his monologue to respond to the backlash. “I’m very happy, and I think everyone is happy about it,” he said, referring to his Super Bowl appearance. “Even Fox News.” The show then played a montage of Fox News hosts whose words had been spliced together to say, “Bad Bunny is my favorite musician, and he should be the next president.” The artist later spoke in Spanish, saying that his Super Bowl performance would be an important milestone not readily erased. “And if you didn’t understand what I just said, you have four months to learn,” he added. A representative for Bad Bunny, a representative for the N.F.L. and a representative for Roc Nation, which will produce the Super Bowl halftime show, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Saturday. A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security said, “There is no safe haven for violent, criminal illegal aliens in the United States.” The Trump administration has for months cracked down on illegal immigration in several big cities. U.S. citizens, many of them Latino men, have been stopped by ICE agents and in some cases taken into custody. Noem’s comments echo those made by one of her chief advisers, Corey Lewandowski, on “The Benny Show” on Wednesday. “There is nowhere that you can provide safe haven to people who are in this country illegally,” Lewandowski said. “Not the Super Bowl and nowhere else.” “We will find you,” he went on. “We will apprehend you. We will put you in a detention facility, and we will deport you.”

Washington Post: Bad Bunny mocks MAGA backlash over his Super Bowl halftime show
Washington Post [10/5/2025 2:00 PM, Sabrina Rodriguez, 29079K] reports Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny leaned into the conservative backlash against his selection to headline the 2026 Super Bowl halftime show, mocking critics during an appearance on “Saturday Night Live.” “I’m very happy, and I think everyone is happy about it, even Fox News,” Bad Bunny said in his opening monologue. He then paused as the show displayed a mash-up of short clips featuring Fox News personalities strung together to say, “Bad Bunny is my favorite musician, and he should be the next president.” Bad Bunny, whose full name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, then addressed the audience in Spanish, saying his selection is an achievement for all Latinos, “proving that no one can remove or erase our mark and contributions to this country.” Trump, who has long had a contentious relationship with the NFL, has not weighed in on Bad Bunny’s selection. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi L. Noem, however, sharply criticized the NFL on Friday and said ICE would have a presence at the Super Bowl. Speaking on right-wing commentator Benny Johnson’s podcast, she said ICE will be “all over the place,” and people should not attend unless they are “law-abiding Americans who love this country.”

New York Post: There’s only one way to end TSA’s political weaponization of surveillance
New York Post [10/5/2025 2:04 PM, James Bovard, 43962K] reports only in Washington would an edict to banish all dissidents be labeled Operation Freedom to Breathe. The Transportation Security Administration in 2021 created a secret watchlist of individuals who publicly opposed President Joe Biden’s COVID mask mandate. Operation Freedom to Breathe resulted in dozens of individuals being either banned from flying or hit with additional groping or patdowns. The covert crackdown only ended when a federal judge struck down Biden’s mask mandate in April 2022. That was only one of a trifecta of TSA surveillance-gone-wild programs Congress and the Department of Homeland Security exposed last week. Hundreds of Americans were hit by the Biden administration’s secret condemnation of anyone tied to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol protests. TSA approved "enhanced screening" and watchlists for anyone "suspected of traveling to the National Capital Region" for those, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) revealed. TSA bloated the list of Jan. 6 suspects by tapping a George Washington University database of alleged extremists — which was as credible as randomly selecting names of Trump donors. A TSA privacy officer protested: "TSA is punishing people for the expression of their ideas when they haven’t been charged, let alone convicted of incitement or sedition.” New dirt also came to the surface about the Quiet Skies program, which sent TSA air marshals to covertly surveil travelers on the flimsiest pretexts. Quiet Skies, which cost $200 million a year, provoked a scandal last year after targeting former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (now director of national intelligence) after she criticized Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris. Turns out Quiet Skies was also tracking three Republican congressmen before the program was abolished in June. TSA has not yet revealed the names of those congressmen. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem declared Quiet Skies had been used to "target political opponents and benefit political allies," spurring her to remove five senior TSA officials. "President Trump promised to end the weaponization of government against the American people, and we are making good on that promise," she said. A 2023 Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee report noted, "U.S. travelers may be screened for at least 22 different reasons.” DHS receives requests from almost 20,000 people a year complaining about being banned from flying or otherwise penalized, and 98% of those people are not on terrorist watchlists. If Noem truly wants to reform TSA, she should cease shrouding probably its most damning failure.
The Hill: Cyberscammers are cashing in by exploiting cancer patients — we must stop them
The Hill [10/5/2025 11:00 AM, Leeza Garber, 12414K] reports Natalie is a 12-year-old superstar. She is outgoing, intelligent, determined — and when she recently lost her hair from treatment for B-cell leukemia, she said it just made her more aerodynamic. Though still on a tough road, Natalie is thriving. But in the last week, the foundation Natalie and her parents created to support children affected by leukemia saw shocking updates on their social media accounts. Someone had stolen Natalie’s photo, likeness and information, falsely reporting that Natalie had passed away, and was asking online for money to help with funeral expenses. Unfortunately, September’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month has become a prime target for malicious cybercriminals. As foundations, children and parents post photos and details about their cancer journeys, scammers repurpose this information to create false accounts on social media and fundraiser platforms. During the darkest of times, when good people are faced with the most trying of circumstances, the cancer awareness movement is working to bring hope, love and light to others. At the same time, fraudsters are stealing, manipulating and lying, leaving a trail of frustration and disappointment in their wake. The scheme is not new: With easy access to photos, videos and personal information, a cybercriminal can create fraudulent accounts and donation campaigns — especially now, in an era of on-demand generative AI, deepfake apps, and voice cloning software. This type of crime is much easier to carry out than creating entire fake charities (which also happens at large scale). But the investigation of the use of social media and sites like GoFundMe to scam unsuspecting donors has become a bad game of whack-a-mole.
New York Post: The hidden cost to Dem benefits for migrants as government shutdown continues
New York Post [10/5/2025 10:17 PM, Jason Richwine, 43962K] reports that, as the government shutdown continues, the media seems fixated on one Republican talking point: That the Democrats want health- care benefits for illegal immigrants. Of course they do. Part of the way Democrats try to claim otherwise is semantics. For example, President Joe Biden ballooned the number of illegal immigrants with Temporary Protected Status from 400,000 to 1.2 million during his term. TPS-holders have no legal right to live here, but the government has promised not to deport them until their home country resolves what is supposed to be a major destabilizing condition — a natural disaster, for example, although past administrations have tended to grant and renew TPS for far less. Similarly, President Biden allowed 2.9 million inadmissible migrants to enter the US via "parole," which, like TPS, gives them a fixed time period to stay before facing removal. Because these migrants are still considered inadmissible and removable, and their deferred status is temporary, the Department of Homeland Security and outside experts continue to count them as illegal immigrants. Prior to passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, parolees could access Medicaid after a five-year waiting period, just as legal permanent residents can, and they could also qualify for Obamacare subsidies after one year. TPS holders for their part could access Obamacare subsidies. The OBBB sunsets all of these privileges, but the Democrats’ proposed budget would restore them. Therefore, the claim that congressional Democrats want to give public health benefits to illegal immigrants is indeed true. That dispute is minor, however, compared to the broader reality that illegal immigrants already consume public health benefits through other pathways. Perhaps the most obvious is emergency Medicaid. Illegal immigrants who show up in emergency rooms, including expectant mothers, will generally have their health-care expenses covered by federal taxpayers. Another avenue is state-level programs. California, Illinois and New York are among the approximately 14 states that fund coverage for illegal immigrant children. Some states even provide adult illegal immigrants with health benefits. The Center for Immigration Studies has found that 59% of households headed by an illegal immigrant consume at least one means-tested benefit, with 39% consuming Medicaid specifically. Some additional restrictions could help reduce the public health benefits that illegal immigrants receive. Indeed, the House version of the OBBB would have penalized states that offered benefits to illegal immigrants, but this provision was dropped by the Senate. Still, no set of restrictions can block all such welfare usage. Hospitals will always help people in emergencies, regardless of their immigration status, and the citizen children of illegal immigrants will always be eligible for welfare as long as we have a welfare state. The ultimate solution to illegal immigrants consuming Medicaid or any other type of welfare is simply to reduce the size of the illegal immigrant population. Fortunately, the Trump administration has shown that controlling the border and deporting people with removal orders is indeed possible. It is those enforcement policies — not simply restrictions on program access — that will ultimately save taxpayers.
Bloomberg: US Politicians Need to Bone Up on Immigration Economics
Bloomberg [10/6/2025 5:00 AM, Clive Crook, 19085K] reports the economics of immigration has a lot in common with the economics of trade. Lower barriers to imports raise growth and living standards in the aggregate — but harm particular people and places. Lower barriers to immigration do the same. Politicians struggle to understand this trade-off, let alone manage it wisely. Of the two, the case for more immigrants might be harder to grasp — because the aggregate gains are more subtle. Until recently, the case for liberal commerce was mostly taken for granted, and not just by “experts.” As Americans are in the process of discovering, high tariffs make many of the things they want to buy more expensive. That will depress consumers’ real incomes and make almost everybody worse off. The gains from trade are widely shared and, given time, obvious. The gains from immigration, by contrast, go disproportionately to the immigrants themselves. Natives might see that as no reason to welcome them in, especially if more immigration also means higher taxes (to pay for schools and other public services), fewer jobs and lower wages for the people who were there first. There’s no denying that immigration is good for migrants. (If it wasn’t, they’d stay put.) Yet, trade-off notwithstanding, it’s a fallacy to think their gains impose a net cost on everybody else. Overall, the hosts gain too, and not just a little. In fact, squeezing immigration will probably harm the US even more than taxing imports.
New York Post: [OR] Trump rightly defies judge to protect ICE agents from Portland militants — shouldn’t be this hard
New York Post [10/5/2025 9:58 PM, Miranda Devine, 43962K] reports a federal judge on Saturday issued a temporary restraining order blocking President Trump from sending Oregon’s National Guard to Portland to defend federal agents from violent attacks by black bloc militants who surround the ICE facility every night. Obama-appointed District Judge Michael Simon was convinced by lawyers for Oregon State that the attacks were peaceful. This flies in the face of footage from Fox News and "citizen journalists" chronicling violence every night as Antifa mobs hurl rocks at federal agents and their vehicles, assault journalists, and block traffic while Portland police stand by. In fact, Portland police are doing more than nothing: they have been filmed actively gathering complaints from Antifa thugs who claim they were maced or roughed up by federal agents. When called for backup, these pretend cops respond that they "don’t have the resources," according to court documents tendered in the State of Oregon’s lawsuit. After "citizen journalist" Katie Daviscourt was given a black eye by an Antifa type who attacked her with a flagpole last week, Portland police ignored her entreaties to arrest her assailant. But the next night, they arrested her colleague Nick Sortor and charged him with disorderly conduct after he got into a one-sided scuffle with an aggressive group of black bloc militants who pushed him to the ground and broke his camera. After spending the night in a cell, Sortor told Fox News that the Portland jail was "weirdly empty because they don’t actually arrest criminals around here, just people like me that report on what’s actually happening on the ground… "If what I was doing was disorderly, what do you call people with megaphones at three in the morning lighting fires in the middle of the street?". Under orders from the Democrats who run the city, there’s no question that Portland cops are taking sides against the federal government, even as Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has revealed that her officers are being threatened with doxing campaigns and even $10,000 bounties to kill them. This is why President Trump ordered troops into Portland. He has now bypassed Judge Simon’s ruling by deploying California National Guard troops instead, only to prompt yet another Democrat lawsuit, this time from Governor Gavin Newsom. It shouldn’t be this hard for the president to do the job the American people voted him in to do.

CNN’s State of the Union With Jake Tapper and Dana Bash: Secretary Noem Clashes With Governor Pritzker on Public Reception of Chicago ICE Raids
CNN’s State of the Union With Jake Tapper and Dana Bash [10/5/2025 12:56 PM, Staff, 431K] reports Kristi Noem, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary says that the people on Chicago streets are clapping as DHS does their work. "They’re clapping as these officers are arresting these bad criminals. This is a war zone. His city is a war zone, and he’s lying so that criminals can go in there and destroy people’s lives." Noem states. Governor Pritzker responds to Noems claims. "Let me just say that the secretary doesn’t know what she’s talking about. She, frankly, says that people are clapping. They’re not. They’re booing her on the street. And they’re booing ICE and CBP. They’re marching -- CBP marching on a beautiful Sunday in Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago." Pritzker comments. " They’re raiding neighborhoods, where, instead of going after the bad guys, they’re just picking up people who are brown and black and then checking their credentials: Are you a U.S. citizen?" Pritzker says regarding the recent Chicago ICE raids. "I don’t know about you, but I don’t carry around papers that say I’m a U.S. citizen. So, you can imagine. People are getting detained, they’re getting arrested, U.S. citizens. And they did this, of course, when they raided a building in the middle of the night in South Shore, 130 people that were emptied out of this building. They were going after a few gang members. And, instead, they broke windows, they broke down doors, they ransacked the place, and there were people that were held, I mean, elderly people and children zip- tied, elderly people held for three hours at a time. They are the ones that are making it a war zone. They need to get out of Chicago. If they’re not going to focus on the worst of the worst, which is what the president said they were going to do, they need to get the heck out." Pritzker states.
ABC’s This Week With George Stephanopoulos: Marco Rubio Shares Thought Process on Negotiations to Rescue Hostages from Hamas
ABC’s This Week With George Stephanopoulos [10/5/2025 12:57 PM, Staff, 2162K] reports Marco Rubio says that this deal is the closest they’ve come to getting all the hostages held by Hamas released. Rubio says that all 48 including the 28 who are deceased would be released. "I would encourage everyone to think about this in two phases. Phase number one, which Hamas has accepted, is the president’s framework for release. The hostages are released and Israel pulls back to what’s been called the yellow line, roughly where they were in August of last year. And that exchange happens. And that’s the first phase of these talks, because you have to work through the logistics of that. You know, where do we -- who’s going to come pick them up, what’s going to be the process for the exchange. We want to see that happen very quickly. The second phase of this conversation, and they can be happening simultaneously, is, what happens after that? What happens after Israel pulls back to this line? What happens with this international group that’s going to come in and create a governance structure, an international governance structure, led by technocrats, Palestinian technocrats, et cetera? That’s the part that I think is going to be a little tougher to work through. But that’s what’s going to provide permanency to the end of the conflict." Rubio states.
CBS’ Face The Nation: Secretary Rubio Urges Negotiations With Hamas in Egypt to Focus on Ending Violence
CBS’ Face The Nation [10/5/2025 11:54 AM, Staff, 1292K] reports it would be extraordinary to end what has been one of Israel’s longest and bloodiest wars. The prime minister said he’s only allowing these talks that will be underway in Egypt to go for a few days. What exactly is the deadline for Hamas and the terror groups who are holding hostages? When do they need to release them? Marco Rubio Breaks down a couple points. "Hamas has obviously, look, we’re dealing with Hamas, OK? So let’s take that with – for what it is. But they have said that they agree with the president’s framework for the release of the hostages. So what those talks should be about, and some of that conversation is already happening now - - it’s not waiting until Monday in Cairo – is the logistics behind the release of these hostages. How do you stop the fighting? Who’s going to go in and get them? You know, when are they going to be released? Where are they picked up? What are the processes for this? That’s what should be – that’s what this conversation should be about at this point, because they’ve agreed to the framework of it. Then there’s second – beyond that is, what happens after that? And that is, how do we ensure that we can create a – and help build a Gaza free of terrorism, free of Hamas, free of anything like Hamas? And that’s going to take work and some time, not just to agree on, but to implement. But that’s important, because that’s what’s going to bring a permanent end to these hostilities in the long term. And so those are the two phases here. But, right now, the most emergent and immediate phase is the one that Hamas claims to have agreed to already, and that is, they are prepared to release the hostages. Let’s discuss through the mediators the logistics and the mechanics behind how that happens. And that has to happen very quickly. That cannot drag on." Rubio states.
CBS’ Face The Nation: Marco Rubio Discusses Endeavor to Remove Terrorism from Gaza
CBS’ Face The Nation [10/5/2025 11:54 AM, Staff, 1292K] reports there are two phases with Hamas releasing the hostages that Marco Rubio is focused on. But, big picture, does the United States assess that Israel has so reduced the threat posed by Hamas that it can end combat and transition to the kind of lower tempo counterterrorism campaign that, say, the United States carries out against terrorist threats to this country? Rubio says that the ideal outcome is not having to carry out any counterterror missions because there are no terrorists in Gaza because Gaza is governed by Palestinian technocrats. Secretary Rubio is asked if Israel can take the win? Can Netanyahu say he won this war? Well, first of all, that – creating a Gaza – or setting up a Gaza that is governed by Palestinian technocrats that are not terrorists and are not sponsoring terrorism, that’s not going to happen in 72 hours. That’s going to take some time to build up, and it’s going to require a lot of work and a lot of international support. And that’s the end goal here of this entire endeavor, after you get the hostages out. By the way, if you can’t get the hostages out, you have no hope of getting that done. So that’s why I say, you know, that that – these two steps need to happen. But it’s going to take a lot of hard work and time. You know, you’re trying to build something that doesn’t exist right now, which is a sort of civilian Palestinian leadership that’s not tied to terrorism. That doesn’t exist right now. It’s going to take a lot of help from international partners. That’s why having the countries in the region and the Europeans and all others involved in this in both money and resources, that’s why building that coalition is so critical. And then implementing it is not going to be easy."
NBC’s Meet the Press: Speaker Mike Johnson Announced This Week That the House Will Not Be in Session Until The Government Reopens
NBC’s Meet the Press [10/5/2025 12:47 PM, Staff] reports Speaker Mike Johnson announced this week that the House will not be in session until the government reopens. However there are still things that he could be doing. There are appropriations bills that could be worked, there’s a new Democratic Congresswoman who still needs to be sworn in. Isn’t there still critical work that he could be doing on behalf of the American public? "We’re doing that critical work. Let me just start by saying I listened to my friend Hakeem there, and when we used to do debate competitions in high school, they taught us to watch out for the red herring. The red herring is a distraction. Literally, everything my friend just said there was unnecessary. Because what he’s trying to talk about is a December funding issue. The healthcare provisions, some of these Obamacare subsidies that expire December 31st. He is looking over entirely the fact that we have to keep the government open in order to have those bipartisan debates and discussions that he just referenced. The simple CR that we passed in the House, more than two weeks ago, does exactly that. It is a clean CR. It’s only 24 pages in length. It’s the simplest thing that’s ever been done, and it’s exactly what Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries and all the rest of them said must be done. You saw the tape. We could roll that tape for hours. All of them saying this, passionately, as recently as earlier this year, that we had to keep the government open in order to do our job." Johnson states.
NBC’s Meet the Press: Senator Adam Schiff Outlines Democratic Goals, Justifications in Government Shutdown
NBC’s Meet the Press [10/5/2025 12:47 PM, Staff] reports the government is shut down. Three colleagues of Sen. Adam Schiff in the Democratic Caucus have broken ranks. They voted with Republicans to keep the government open. How confident is Schiff that Democrats will stay united in this fight? "I’m confident all Democrats understand that millions and millions of their constituents are about to be priced out of their health care. I was in California last week in Oceanside and in Anaheim. Average families of four are going to see the premiums go up by $900 to $1,000 a month. No one can afford that, and that’s going to happen all across the country. So I think all my colleagues understand the crisis. We need a president who can act like an adult, who can come to the table and negotiate an end to their self-imposed health care crisis. Right now we don’t see that. We see Trump out on the golf course, we see the speaker telling his House colleagues not to even come to session, that there’s no work for the federal government to do, apparently. That’s completely unacceptable, and in addition to the need to restore health care affordability for people, we need to make sure that any agreement that we reach with Republicans they will honor. Because right now they’re telling us, "You can reach an agreement with us, but we’re simply going to withhold any money that’s important to you, any programs that are important to you." And as for the speaker telling you – or not telling you – his position on the president threatening the mass layoffs of federal employees, there’s no one forcing him to do that. He will do that because he wants to do that, because he and Russell Vought want to cause even more pain for the American people. That is unprecedented. No other president during a shutdown has sought to maximize the harms to people, but that’s where this president is coming from." Schiff stated.

CBS News: Encountering ICE: A "David vs. Goliath" moment
CBS News [10/5/2025 9:28 AM, Lee Cowan, 45245K] Video: HERE reports it’s 11:00 a.m. on a Sunday in the heart of Hollywood, and the service at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church is just getting underway. It was worship via the web. The church itself was empty, just like during the pandemic, when parishioners feared catching COVID. Today it was empty because they fear being caught themselves. On June 6, agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement descended on Ambiance Apparel, a clothing wholesaler in L.A.’s Fashion District. The pastor of St. Stephen’s, Father Jaime Edwards Acton, whose congregation is about 80% Hispanic, got a frantic call: "She said, ‘They got ‘em.’ At first, I had no idea what she was talking about because I was not thinking about it," Acton said. "Even with all the threats and the bravado and stuff, I was not thinking that it would happen directly to us.” Thirteen members of his congregation were arrested that day. The Trump Administration no longer considers schools, hospitals and churches to be "protected sensitive locations" anymore. So, the following Sunday, Acton told his faithful to stay away. He says the decision to close the church was not made lightly: "No, not at all, but I was trying to balance, could we do church in person knowing that a good portion of our community was too afraid to leave their homes? It wasn’t even people that were undocumented. I have longtime parishioners that I know for sure are citizens and have been for a while that were afraid to leave. They were afraid to leave their homes.” In Los Angeles, that fear turned to anger, and anger into violence. The raids were challenged in court for being indiscriminate and based on skin color, but ultimately the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the raids could continue. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has long defended the ICE raids as only going after the "worst of the worst.” "Nobody is getting swept up," Noem said on August 8. "We’re running targeted enforcement operations across the country.” But as those operations increased, so have assaults on federal agents: a sniper attack on an ICE facility in Dallas; an ambush in Alvarado, Texas; a violent scuffle in San Francisco.
Univision: [GA] Venezuelan woman pleads for deportation after three months in ICE Deportation Center
Univision [10/5/2025 12:12 PM, Staff, 4932K] reports Leidybeth Santos is a 22-year-old Venezuelan woman detained by ICE for more than three months at the Stewart Detention Center , where she pleads for deportation because she says her mental health is deteriorating daily. “I don’t want to be in this place anymore, Stewart… I don’t want this anymore ,” Santos said in an interview with Univision ‘s Yólise Paez from the detention center. The young woman spoke with Univision to call on immigration authorities to execute her deportation order. “I’ve been here for three months and a week now… They gave me a deportation order, and I told them I wanted to leave, but I’m still here . They can’t get anything out of me ,” the Venezuelan woman said. “Mentally, I’m already very exhausted. I’m really bad here,” she added. Outside the center, her partner and her mother are worried about her health. “When she talks to me or talks to her mom, she tells us she’s depressed . That there are days she doesn’t eat, she’s lost a lot of weight, and she spends all her time crying, “ said Isaí Flores, Santos’ partner. “(On top of that) they punish her… they don’t let her use the phone… even for her, because she’s awake, they took away her commissary for a month, where she buys food,” Flores added. “She’s sad, I feel bad. My daughter is suffering over there,” said Lisbeth Pérez, her mother, crying from Venezuela . “I beg (the immigration authorities), please, free my daughter Leidybeth Santos, I ask you with all my heart,” the grieving mother added. Breitbart: [IL] Duckworth Accuses ICE Agents of Using ‘Gestapo Tactics’ in Chicago
Breitbart [10/5/2025 12:50 PM, Pam Key, 2608K] Video: HERE reports Sunday on CBS’s "Face the Nation, " Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) accused Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents of "using Gestapo tactics" in Chicago.
FOX News: [IL] ICE video goes viral as agency uses cart to wheel Portland protester into custody: ‘Refuse to walk? We’ll give you a ride’
FOX News [10/5/2025 5:36 PM, Andrea Margolis Fox, 40019K] reports Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recently shared a video of a suspect being rolled away on a flatbed platform cart to the song "Ridin’" by Chamillionaire. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agency posted the video on X on Oct. 5. According to the post, it was taken in Portland. The video shows the suspect, who was wearing a black hoodie, lying face down on the metal cart. The individual’s hands were restrained behind their back. The video went viral. It got tens of thousands of likes within a few hours on X. As of 5:30 p.m., on Sunday, it had over three million impressions. The agency captioned the post, "Refuse to walk? We’ll give you a ride.” Fox News Digital reached out to ICE to learn more about the suspect and the circumstances, but did not immediately hear back. The video came as President Donald Trump’s administration continues its law enforcement efforts – and as protests against ICE intensify across the country. In a Chicago suburb on Friday, more than a dozen people were arrested by federal agents during protests at an ICE processing facility. Around 250 anti-ICE demonstrators took part in the protests in Broadview, Ill. Fox News observed agents firing pepper balls, tear gas and rubber bullets to clear crowds. Also on Friday, ICE officers were targeted by illegal immigrants who used "vehicles as weapons," authorities said. The incidents took place in the Illinois suburbs of Norridge and Bensenville. "Thankfully none of our law enforcement was killed because of these deranged criminals’ attacks on law enforcement," DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.
New York Times: [IA] The Superintendent’s Bio Seemed Too Good to Be True. It Was.
New York Times [10/5/2025 8:25 PM, Mitch Smith, Ernesto Londoño, and Dana Goldstein, 153395K] reports school district leaders in Des Moines drew up a detailed wish list when they set out to hire a new superintendent in 2023. They wanted someone who could increase reading scores, improve the math skills of Black boys, adhere to an affirmative action plan and much more. Most of all, Des Moines Public Schools needed a galvanizing leader who could meet a moment shaped by the aftermath of Covid and the racial justice movement of 2020. Ian Roberts’s application seemed almost too perfect. Dr. Roberts had spent most of his career in urban school systems, building a reputation as a charismatic, hands-on administrator. He wrote books, gave speeches and boasted of degrees from brand-name universities. His life story was also compelling: an immigrant from Guyana who competed in the Olympics and spoke bluntly about his experiences as a Black man in the United States. “I believe deeply in the promise of public education being the most important opportunity gap closer for youth, particularly with a focus on diverse populations,” Dr. Roberts, who is in his 50s, wrote in his cover letter for the Des Moines job. Red flags would pop up: The district learned about a past brush with law enforcement and a misstatement on his résumé about where he had earned a doctorate. But Des Moines officials moved ahead to hire him. Two outside companies were involved in vetting Dr. Roberts, who told district officials and a state licensing board that he was a United States citizen. Nobody seemed to realize that he was lying, and that the man seeking to run Iowa’s largest school district was not allowed to work in this country.

AP [10/6/2025 4:05 AM, Staff, 37974K] reports protesters confronted law enforcement officers near a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Portland, Oregon on Sunday night. Also late Sunday, a federal judge temporarily blocked the Trump administration from deploying any National Guard units to Oregon at all. [Editorial note: consult video at source link]
FOX News: [OR] Portland police sergeant appears to criticize assault victims for antagonizing anti-ICE protesters
FOX News [10/5/2025 2:25 PM, Stephen Sorace, 40019K] reports an email from a Portland police sergeant appeared to criticize three people he described as "counter-protesters" after confronting anti-U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protesters outside an immigration facility and getting assaulted. The email from Sgt. Andrew Braun of the Portland Police Bureau was filed in Oregon federal court in the state’s lawsuit against President Donald Trump, and noticed by Andy Ngo, a senior editor at the Post Millennial who frequently covers Antifa and U.S. protests. In the email, dated Sept. 21, Braun writes, "these 3 counter-protesters continue to be a chronic source of police and medical calls at ICE.” The three individuals are listed as victims in the email and identified as Rhein Amacher, 35, Chelly Bouferrache, 56, and Katelyn Daviscourt, 31. "Despite repeated advice from officers to stay away from the ICE crowd, they constantly return and antagonize the protesters until they are assaulted or pepper sprayed," Braun writes of the three individuals in the email. "They refuse or are reluctant to walk away from these confrontations, even when police are in the area trying to meet with them.” Amacher describes himself as a "Right-wing Provocateur," according to his associated X account. An X account associated with Bouferrache states she is a "Blue state dissident" and "Anti-Communist." Daviscourt is an investigative reporter with the Post Millennial. All three X accounts associated with the individuals share video and coverage of the recent anti-ICE protests in Portland. "The Portland Police Bureau is trying to cover for the fact that they can’t keep the city safe and, instead of acknowledge their own failures, they smear journalists like me who have been diligently covering the violence at the ICE facility," Daviscourt told Fox News Digital in an emailed statement.
New York Post: [OR] ICE posts viral video of cuffed Portland protester being wheeled away on flatbed cart
New York Post [10/6/2025 2:58 AM, Zoe Hussain, 43962K] reports Immigration and Customs Enforcement posted a now-viral video of a Portland protester being wheeled away on a metal flatbed cart to the 2005 hip-hop hit "Ridin" by Chamillionaire. ICE posted the clip of the face-down individual in a hoodie lying on their stomach on the cart with their hands cuffed behind their back while spitting and gritting their teeth, adding the caption "Refuse to walk? We’ll give you a ride," on X Sunday. The video has since racked up 8.4 million views and over 113,000 likes – while sparking outrage from some users who contended the agency’s handling of the arrestee was "repulsive.” ICE did not respond to The Post’s request for comment for additional information on the arrest at the time of publication. The video comes as President Trump on Sunday defied a federal order and deployed 300 California National Guard troops to Portland, Oregon, following anti-ICE protests in the city. "After a federal court blocked his attempt to federalize the Oregon National Guard, Donald Trump is deploying 300 California National Guard personnel into Oregon," California Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a post on X. Last week, Trump demanded Secretary of War Pete Hegseth unleash "all necessary troops" to Portland and use "full force" to protect ICE from "domestic terrorists.” Oregon immediately sued to block the deployment of troops. US District Judge Karin Immergut, a Trump nominee, ruled Saturday that deploying active-duty troops to Portland would violate the US Constitution and defy federal law barring military involvement in domestic law enforcement. She also argued that Trump’s order did not reflect the reality on the ground of the protests at the immigration processing facility in South Portland. "Overall, the protests were small and uneventful," she wrote in her ruling. "The President’s determination was simply untethered to the facts.” Before the judge’s Saturday ruling, hundreds of protesters marched in protest to the South Macadam Avenue detention center — clashing with federal agents who fired tear gas, mace, and pepper spray at the crowds, according to local reports.

New York Post: [MN] ‘Minnesota nice’ enabled immigration fraud to flourish in Twin Cities for decades, ex-sheriff says: ‘It’s all about votes’
New York Post [10/5/2025 6:08 PM, Alex Oliveira, 43962K] reports a former Minneapolis sheriff says an excessive helping of "Minnesota nice" enabled the egregious spread of immigration fraud uncovered by federal officials in the Twin Cities last month. "Minnesota has always been a very welcoming place," said Rich Stanek, who spent 12 years overseeing Minneapolis law enforcement as Hennepin County Sheriff. "But when people say ‘Minnesota nice,’ they simply didn’t ask. Or they ignored it.” It’s those midwestern manners that Stanek believes led directly to the immigration crisis US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) discovered across Minneapolis and St. Paul in September: of 1,000 immigrant households visited during a two-week period, nearly half were engaged in some form of immigration fraud. "Officers encountered blatant marriage fraud, visa overstay, people claiming to work at businesses that can’t be found, forged documents, abuse of the H1B visa system, abuse of the F1 visa, and many other discrepancies," USCIS director Joseph B. Edlow told reporters after the operation concluded. Stanek — who called USCIS’ findings "extremely high" — thinks local left-wing officials have been openly ignoring those abuses for decades, possibly with the long-term goal of building a voter base that would support their agendas. "You’ve had several governors in a row — Mark Dayton and Tim Walz — who have ignored it. You had local officials in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Hennepin, Ramsey County, that have ignored it," he said. "It’s all about votes.” USCIS did not say which immigrant communities were behind the fraud, but the local Somali population has boomed in recent decades to about 82,000 people — and Stanek said they have been particularly adept at working their way into local politics as they become naturalized. "The community did what a lot of immigrant communities do — they became empowered. They elected themselves, they elected their kin to office, city councils, school boards, state legislature, Congress," Stanek said.

CNN: [TN] At least 170 US hospitals face major flood risk. Experts say Trump is making it worse.
CNN [10/5/2025 7:00 AM, Holly K. Hacker and Brett Kelman and Daniel Chang, 662K] reports when a big storm hits, Peninsula Hospital could be underwater. At this decades-old psychiatric hospital on the edge of the Tennessee River, an intense storm could submerge the building in 11 feet of water, cutting off all roads around the facility, according to a sophisticated computer simulation of flood risk. Aurora, a young woman who was committed to Peninsula as a teenager, said the hospital sits so close to the river that it felt like a moat keeping her and dozens of other patients inside. KFF Health News agreed not to publish her full name because she shared private medical history. "My first feeling is doom," Aurora said as she watched the simulation of the river rising around the hospital. "These are probably some of the most vulnerable people.” Covenant Health, which runs Peninsula Hospital, said in a statement it has a "proactive and thorough approach to emergency planning" but declined to provide details or answer questions. Peninsula is one of about 170 American hospitals, totaling nearly 30,000 patient beds from coast to coast, that face the greatest risk of significant or dangerous flooding, according to a months-long KFF Health News investigation based on data provided by Fathom, a company considered a leader in flood simulation. At many of these hospitals, flooding from heavy storms has the potential to jeopardize patient care, block access to emergency rooms, and force evacuations. Sometimes there is no other hospital nearby. Much of this risk to hospitals is not captured by flood maps issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which have served as the nation’s de facto tool for flood estimation for half a century, despite being incomplete and sometimes decades out of date. As FEMA’s maps have become divorced from the reality of a changing climate, private companies like Fathom have filled the gap with simulations of future floods. But many of their predictions are behind a paywall, leaving the public mostly reliant on free, significantly limited government maps. "This is highly concerning," said Caleb Dresser, who studies climate change and is both an emergency room doctor and a Harvard University assistant professor. "If you don’t have the information to know you’re at risk, then how can you triage that problem?".

New York Post: [DC] New Jersey man arrested for having Molotov cocktail outside DC church during high profile mass
New York Post [10/5/2025 8:18 PM, Zoe Hussain, 43962K] reports a New Jersey man was arrested after allegedly toting a Molotov cocktail outside a Washington, DC Catholic church that was hosting a special mass to celebrate the start of the Supreme Court term, according to authorities. Louis Geri, of Vineland, New Jersey, was cuffed on the steps of the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle shortly before 6 a.m. Sunday after setting up a tent full of "suspicious" items and refusing to leave, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. Geri, 41, had already been banned from the Cathedral premises, officers learned, though the reason for his barring was not specified. After cops noticed "multiple suspicious items," including vials of liquid and possible fireworks, inside his tent, the MPD’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal team and the Arson Task Force arrived to search his belongings, police said. Geri was arrested and charged with Unlawful Entry, Threats to Kidnap or Injure a Person, and Possession of a Molotov Cocktail, according to authorities. St. Matthew’s was celebrating its Red Mass, an annual celebration on the Sunday before the first Monday in October to mark the opening of the Supreme Court’s term. "Its purpose is to invoke God’s blessings on those responsible for the administration of justice as well as on all public officials," the Catholic church wrote in a description of the event. The area was secured, and the front entrance of the cathedral remained closed as the scene was processed, police said. Geri’s motive remains unclear. The incident will be investigated by members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force, the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Washington Field Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The alleged threat comes a week after a gunman rammed his truck into a Mormon church in Michigan, shot a hail of bullets at worshippers and burnt the building to the ground — killing four.
New York Post: [AL] 2 killed, 12 wounded in Montgomery, Ala., mass shooting after gunmen spray bullets into downtown crowd
New York Post [10/5/2025 2:18 PM, Anthony Blair and Chris Nesi, 43962K] reports two people were killed and 12 others wounded in Montgomery Saturday night as two rival groups started indiscriminately spraying bullets at each other in the middle of a crowd in the state capital’s downtown. Montgomery Police Department Chief James Graboys said at a Sunday afternoon press conference that the shootout "started as a result of an individual who we believe was targeted," prompting "multiple people in the crowd" to draw their own weapons and start firing. Seven of the victims are teenagers, and five of those shot are facing life-threatening injuries, authorities said. At least two victims in the shooting were armed. Graboys said "multiple" calibers of ammo were used, and that "multiple weapons" were recovered at the scene. The victims killed in the shooting were identified as Jeremiah Morris, 17, and 43-year-old Shalanda Williams. The massacre happened in the city’s busy tourist district downtown just after the football game between Tuskegee University and Morehouse College, two historically black universities in the state. Reed told reporters Sunday that the shooting had no connection to the football game. The fracas escalated into a running gun battle that saw the perps — whose weapons had "very high-capacity magazines" — firing wildly into a crowd, hitting bystanders. Graboys said the department had been questioning "multiple" victims, and the "very complex" investigation is underway including a mass assortment of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and ATF. "This was very much avoidable. The individuals responsible for this carried the weapons into the crowd. They could have walked away from what was happening but they did not," Graboys said.

CBS News: [Israel] Trump urges Gaza peace deal negotiators to "move fast" as meeting set to begin in Cairo
CBS News [10/5/2025 8:18 PM, Lucia I Suarez Sang, 45245K] reports President Trump urged negotiators set to meet Monday for crucial talks aimed at ending the war in Gaza to "move fast" as hopes for a peace deal grew after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said a hostage release could be announced this week. Tuesday marks two years since the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, that sparked the war. "There have been very positive discussions with Hamas, and Countries from all over the World (Arab, Muslim, and everyone else) this weekend, to release the Hostages, end the War in Gaza but, more importantly, finally have long sought PEACE in the Middle East," Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday. "These talks have been very successful, and proceeding rapidly." He added: "The technical teams will again meet Monday, in Egypt, to work through and clarify the final details. I am told that the first phase should be completed this week, and I am asking everyone to MOVE FAST. I will continue to monitor this Centuries old ‘conflict.’ TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE OR, MASSIVE BLOODSHED WILL FOLLOW – SOMETHING THAT NOBODY WANTS TO SEE!" On Friday, Hamas said it had accepted some elements from the U.S.-led peace plan that Mr. Trump outlined last month. Under the plan, Hamas would release the remaining 48 hostages — about 20 believed to be alive — within 72 hours. It would also give up power and disarm, which Hamas has not agreed to do. The delegation led by top Israeli negotiator Ron Dermer will leave Monday for the talks in Sharm el-Sheikh, Netanyahu’s office said. An Egyptian official said the Hamas delegation had arrived. U.S. special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and senior adviser, are joining the talks, a senior U.S. official confirmed to CBS News. Discussions will focus on the proposed exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, Egypt’s foreign ministry said. In a brief statement on Saturday, Netanyahu said he hopes to announce the release of all hostages "in the coming days" and that "our goal is to contain these negotiations to a time frame of a few days." But he signaled there would not be a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, something Hamas has long demanded. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told CBS News’ "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan" on Sunday that the release of hostages from Gaza is the "most emergent and immediate phase" of the peace plan. "Beyond that is what happens after that, and that is, how do we ensure that we can create and help build a Gaza free of terrorism, free of Hamas, free of anything like Hamas," Rubio said. "And that’s going to take work and some time not just to agree on, but to implement." On the hostages, Rubio said the "expectation is that this happens quickly," though he wasn’t clear on a specific deadline. He acknowledged that there are some logistical hurdles, including Israeli bombardment. "Reality is, this is a war zone. I mean, this is a place that’s suffered a tremendous amount of destruction. That fighting needs to stop," Rubio said. "You can’t release hostages while there’s still bombardments going on." [Editorial note: consult video at source link]
Daily Wire: [Israel] Hamas Faces ‘Complete Obliteration’ If It Won’t Give Up Gaza, Trump Says
Daily Wire [10/5/2025 2:26 PM, Tim Pearce, 3184K] reports Hamas will face "complete obliteration" if the terror group refuses to step out of power in the Gaza Strip as part of peace negotiations with Israel, according to President Donald Trump. The president weighed in on the potential ramifications if Hamas declines to accept a U.S.-backed peace proposal in a text exchange with CNN host Jake Tapper. The terror group has signaled initial willingness to move forward on the deal, but has not yet begun to release its remaining hostages, a critical first step in the peace process. The president said that Hamas would be obliterated if it rejected the peace proposal. Tapper followed up, asking about Sen. Lindsey Graham’s belief that the terror group had effectively rejected the peace proposal by insisting on "no disarmament, keeping Gaza under Palestinian control and tying hostage release to negotiations.” "We will find out. Only time will tell!!!" the president said when asked if Graham was wrong. Trump said on Sunday that he expects the Hamas to begin releasing hostages to Israel "very soon." Asked about the status on a U.S.-backed peace plan on Sunday, Trump said his proposal to end the war between Israel and Hamas is a "great deal.” "It’s a great deal for Israel. It’s a great deal for the entire Arab world, Muslim world, and world, so we’re very happy about it," the president said, before adding that he believes Hamas will release hostages "very soon.” "They’re in negotiation right now as we speak," he said. "It will last a couple of days. We’ll see how it turns out, but I’m hearing it’s going very well.” The terror group still holds 48 hostages. Only 28 of those are believed to still be alive.
Reuters: [China] How China waged an infowar against U.S. interests in the Philippines
Reuters [10/5/2025 11:32 PM, Poppy McPherson and Karen Lema, 45746K] reports that, as Chinese ships fired water cannons at Philippine vessels in the South China Sea in November 2021, Beijing’s then-ambassador to Manila asked Filipinos on Facebook to share their favorite things about China. Among the hundreds of gushing responses were three from a young man named "Vince Dimaano.” His comments - like many responding to the Chinese embassy’s posts - weren’t genuine. They came from fake accounts paid for by the diplomatic mission, according to internal documents from a Manila-based marketing agency. The firm, InfinitUs Marketing Solutions, waged a cyber campaign paid for by China to weaken support for Philippine government policy and to sow discord over Manila’s security alliance with the United States, according to a review of the documents and the fake Facebook (META.O) accounts, as well as interviews with two former company employees and two Philippine officials. The Chinese-owned company also used the fake profiles to amplify anti-American content created by Filipino writers, including some who had received money from Beijing, Reuters found. InfinitUs and its owner Paul Li did not respond to questions. The company has previously denied any involvement with "illicit digital activity.” A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson told Reuters that Beijing doesn’t interfere in the internal affairs of other countries. Allegations of Chinese influence campaigns made by some Filipino politicians "have failed and instead have backfired," the spokesperson said. The explosion of social media has turbocharged influence operations in the Philippines , according to Jonathan Malaya, until recently a senior official with the Philippine National Security Council. Manila is of increasing strategic importance to Washington and Beijing due to its proximity to Taiwan. China’s leaders have asked their military to be ready to seize the democratically governed island by 2027. InfinitUs first came under the spotlight at an April Senate hearing, when then-Majority Leader Francis Tolentino accused it of using fake accounts to boost the embassy’s profile and conduct an "influence operation" against the Philippines. Tolentino produced a copy of a check from the embassy to InfinitUs and highlighted posts by accounts that Reuters later identified as inauthentic, but he did not elaborate further. The scope of InfinitUs’s activities went beyond the pro-China propaganda that Tolentino alleged, Reuters reporting revealed. Its work included disparaging the U.S.-Philippine alliance and Western-made COVID vaccines. The news agency also uncovered that InfinitUs had created Ni Hao Manila, a media outlet designed to look Filipino-run, according to the former employees. InfinitUs employees used accounts masquerading as pro-Beijing Filipinos to attack the U.S. and abuse a prominent nationalist lawmaker, the profiles and company records show. The documents include an August 2023 contract tasking InfinitUs with "guiding public opinion" on Facebook and X, as well as work-progress reports created for the embassy.
