Reuters/Bloomberg/Daily Caller/AP/Washington Post/ABC News: Trump deploys National Guard as Los Angeles protests against immigration agents continue
Reuters [6/7/2025 9:47 PM, Sandra Stojanovic and Omar Younis, 51390K] reports President Donald Trump’s administration said it would deploy 2,000 National Guard troops on Saturday as federal agents in Los Angeles faced off against demonstrators for a second day following immigration raids. The security agents confronted around 100 protesters in the Paramount area in southeast Los Angeles, where some demonstrators displayed Mexican flags and others covered their mouths with respiratory masks. Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, told Fox News that the National Guard would be deployed in Los Angeles on Saturday evening. California Governor Gavin Newsom called the decision "purposefully inflammatory." A first round of protests kicked off on Friday night after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents conducted enforcement operations in the city and arrested at least 44 people on alleged immigration violations. Stephen Miller, an immigration hardliner and the White House deputy chief of staff, wrote on X that Friday’s demonstrations were "an insurrection against the laws and sovereignty of the United States." On Saturday, he described the day’s protests as a "violent insurrection." The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement about Friday’s protests that "1,000 rioters surrounded a federal law enforcement building and assaulted ICE law enforcement officers, slashed tires, defaced buildings, and taxpayer funded property." Reuters could not verify DHS’s accounts. Angelica Salas, executive director of immigrants’ rights organization Chirla, said lawyers had not had access to those detained on Friday, which she called "very worrying." ICE, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Los Angeles Police Department did not respond to requests for comment on the protests or potential immigration sweeps on Saturday.
Bloomberg [6/8/2025 3:04 PM, Alicia A. Caldwell, Sarah McGregor, and Janine Phakdeetham, 19320K] reports that the deployment plans come as demonstrations intensified for a second day after US Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions across the city. ICE said it arrested 2,000 undocumented people a day this week nationwide, including 118 individuals in the Los Angeles area. Authorities are mobilizing troops to “address violence and destruction occurring near raid locations where demonstrators are gathering,” border czar Tom Homan said in an interview with Fox News’ The Big Weekend Show. More than 1,000 protesters surrounded a federal building in downtown LA on Friday, and additional demonstrations broke out Saturday in Paramount, just south of the city. Local media reported tear gas and flash-bang grenades deployed to disperse the crowds. The Department of Homeland Security earlier Saturday accused Democratic leaders in California, including California Governor Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass, of contributing to violence. “The violent targeting of law enforcement in Los Angeles by lawless rioters is despicable and Mayor Bass and Governor Newsom must call for it to end,” DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. The
Daily Caller [6/7/2025 8:59 PM, Harold Hutchison, 1010K] reports “The violent targeting of law enforcement in Los Angeles by lawless rioters is despicable and Mayor Bass and Governor Newsom must call for it to end. The men and women of ICE put their lives on the line to protect and defend the lives of American citizens,” Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin said in the statement. “Make no mistake, Democrat politicians like Hakeem Jeffries, Mayor Wu of Boston, Tim Walz, and Mayor Bass of Los Angeles are contributing to the surge in assaults of our ICE officers through their repeated vilification and demonization of ICE,” McLaughlin continued. “From comparisons to the modern-day Nazi gestapo to glorifying rioters, the violent rhetoric of these sanctuary politicians is beyond the pale. This violence against ICE must end.” The
AP [6/7/2025 10:42 PM, Eric Thayer, Morgan Lee, and Michelle L. Price, 56000K] reports that in a signal of the administration’s aggressive approach, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth threatened in a post on X to deploy the U.S. military. “If violence continues, active duty Marines at Camp Pendleton will also be mobilized — they are on high alert,” Hegseth said. Trump federalized part of the California’s National Guard under what is known as Title 10 authority, which places him, not the governor, atop the chain of command, according to Newsom’s office. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement that the work the immigration authorities were doing when met with protests is “essential to halting and reversing the invasion of illegal criminals into the United States. In the wake of this violence, California’s feckless Democrat leaders have completely abdicated their responsibility to protect their citizens.” Mayor Karen Bass said the activity was meant to “sow terror” in the nation’s second-largest city. In a statement Saturday, ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons chided Bass for the city’s response to the protests. “Mayor Bass took the side of chaos and lawlessness over law enforcement,” Lyons said. “Make no mistake, ICE will continue to enforce our nation’s immigration laws and arrest criminal illegal aliens.” The
Washington Post [6/7/2025 6:23 PM, Maeve Reston, Reis Thebault and Emily Davies, 32099K] reports that in a Truth Social post on Saturday, Trump said that if Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass “can’t do their jobs,” the “Federal Government will step in and solve the problem, RIOTS & LOOTERS, the way it should be solved!!!” Early Sunday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the National Guard had yet to be deployed to any sites in the county, and Bass said it had not been deployed within the city limits. But the White House activation of the National Guard marks a major escalation between state and federal authorities as protests erupt over immigration sweeps, part of what the president has said would be the largest-scale deportation operation in the country’s history. For much of last year on the campaign trail, Trump and his allies argued that blue-state immigration policies were putting Americans at risk. They said the administration would crack down on Democratic-run cities and states that offered “sanctuary” to undocumented immigrants. Governors typically control how National Guard troops are deployed in their states. Trump’s move to overrule Newsom’s authority and seize control of 2,000 National Guard troops was immediately condemned by a broad array of Democratic officials and Democrat-aligned groups. Justifying his decision in a presidential memorandum, Trump said “incidents of violence and disorder” following the recent immigration roundups amounted to “a form of rebellion” against the United States. He called the National Guard units into service to protect government personnel by citing a provision in Title 10 of the U.S. Code on Armed Services that allows federal deployment of the National Guard if there is “a rebellion or danger of a rebellion” against the government.
ABC News [6/7/2025 8:26 PM, Nadine El-Bawab and Jack Moore, 31733K] reports that in a statement on social media, United States Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks said several arrests had been made Saturday for alleged assaults on federal agents. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said authorities were seeking to identify people who threw rocks at law enforcement vehicles. The response to the protests has local and federal officials pointing fingers. In a statement Saturday, ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons faulted local officials, including LA Mayor Karen Bass, and police for their response to the situation on Friday evening.

Daily Wire: Pete Hegseth Puts Nearby U.S. Marines On High Alert As Los Angeles Burns
Daily Wire [6/7/2025 5:40 PM, Virginia Kruta, 3816K] reports Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced late Saturday night that in addition to the National Guardsmen — who were being deployed to restore order in Los Angeles — he was placing active duty U.S. Marines at nearby Camp Pendleton on high alert. Hegseth’s announcement, made via a post on X, came just hours after it was reported that President Donald Trump was invoking the Insurrection Act of 1807 in order to deploy a number of National Guard troops as protesters clashed violently with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents across the Los Angeles area. "The violent mob assaults on ICE and Federal Law Enforcement are designed to prevent the removal of Criminal Illegal Aliens from our soil; a dangerous invasion facilitated by criminal cartels (aka Foreign Terrorist Organizations) and a huge NATIONAL SECURITY RISK. Under President Trump, violence & destruction against federal agents & federal facilities will NOT be tolerated. It’s COMMON SENSE," Hegseth said. "The @DeptofDefense is mobilizing the National Guard IMMEDIATELY to support federal law enforcement in Los Angeles. And, if violence continues, active duty Marines at Camp Pendleton will also be mobilized — they are on high alert," he added. The violent mob assaults on ICE and Federal Law Enforcement are designed to prevent the removal of Criminal Illegal Aliens from our soil; a dangerous invasion facilitated by criminal cartels (aka Foreign Terrorist Organizations) and a huge NATIONAL SECURITY RISK. Under normal circumstances, the Posse Comitatus Act prevents the federal government from deploying the military for law enforcement purposes within the United States’ borders, but the Insurrection Act — actually a combination of several statutes enacted between 1792 and 1871 — stands as the one major exception to that. Under the Insurrection Act, the federal government can mobilize the military domestically in order to enforce the law or quell rebellion under certain circumstances. It implements Congress’ Constitutional authority to "provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions.” President Donald Trump can and should immediately use the Insurrection Act in Los Angeles. There is historic precedent to do so. pic.twitter.com/69qy0fwC90. The law can be implemented if and when a U.S. president determines that "unlawful obstructions, combinations, or assemblages, or rebellion" have arisen such that it becomes "impracticable to enforce" U.S. laws and maintain order "by the ordinary course of judicial proceedings.”
Blaze: Los Angeles descends into chaos after police chief says officers will not aid ICE agents; Trump sends National Guard troops
Blaze [6/7/2025 10:57 PM, Carlos Garcia, 1805K] reports the rule of law seems to be collapsing in the city of Los Angeles after protesters against ICE raids turned to violence and vandalism to try to stop immigration enforcement. Videos on social media have captured numerous incidents of anti-ICE rioters throwing rocks at ICE vehicles and violently attacking federal agents. Local officials said law enforcement would not cooperate with ICE operations, but eventually local officers came to ICE agents’ aid after they appeared to be overwhelmed. ‘While the LAPD will continue to have a visible presence in all our communities to ensure public safety, we will not assist or participate in any sort of mass deportations.’. As the protesting began to ramp up on Friday evening, Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell released a statement to reassure immigrants that the LAPD would not assist in any federal deportation operation. "Today the LAPD became aware that federal law enforcement agencies conducted activities in the City of Los Angeles. I’m aware that these actions cause anxiety for many Angelenos, so I want to make it clear: the LAPD is not involved in civil immigration enforcement," the statement read. "While the LAPD will continue to have a visible presence in all our communities to ensure public safety, we will not assist or participate in any sort of mass deportations nor will the LAPD try to determine an individual’s immigration status," he added. "Since 1979, our policy has barred officers from initiating police action solely to determine a person’s immigration status," he continued. "The Department remains focused on critical issues like crime reduction, enhancing public safety and improving the quality of life for all Angelenos. I want everyone, including our immigrant community, to feel safe calling the police in their time of need and know that the LAPD will be there for you without regard to one’s immigration status.”
Washington Examiner/AP/CBS News: Los Angeles immigration protests ramp up after day of citywide ICE operations; Trump responds
The
Washington Examiner [6/7/2025 4:18 PM, Ross O’Keefe, 1934K] reports several Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in Los Angeles caused a wave of protests on Friday that continued into Saturday, which saw officers meet protesters in tactical gear and deploy tear gas. Some protesters threw objects at or tried to block ICE vehicles. At one location, officers handcuffed protesters and placed them into white vans while other protesters tried to prevent them from leaving. The protests are some of the most escalated demonstrations against the Trump administration’s mass deportation efforts. Angelica Salas, director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, said there were seven raids throughout the city on Friday with more than 45 people detained. She called them "random sweeps" that were carried out without a warrant. "This has to stop. Immigration enforcement that is terrorizing our families throughout this country and picking up our people that we love must stop now," Salas said. The protests have been chaotic. Police have deployed tear gas, guns that shoot pepper balls, and zip ties, while wearing riot gear and wielding shields. Service Employees International Union California President David Huerta was injured at the protest and detained by police. He was treated while in custody. Bill Essayli, the U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, said "Federal agents were executing a lawful judicial warrant" when Huerta "deliberately obstructed their access." The
AP [6/7/2025 12:21 PM, Damian Dovarganes and Olga R. Rodriguez, 56000K] reports after federal immigration authorities arrested more than 40 people Friday across Los Angeles, protesters gathered outside a federal detention center demanding their release before police in riot gear tossed tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers executed search warrants at multiple locations, including outside a clothing warehouse where a tense scene unfolded as a crowd tried to block agents from driving away. Sirens blared as protesters surrounded black SUVs and tactical vehicles. Officers threw flash bangs into the street to disperse people as they shouted and filmed the scene with their cell phones. One demonstrator tried to physically stop a vehicle from leaving. Forty-four people were arrested on immigration violations across multiple locations, said Yasmeen Pitts O’Keefe, a spokesperson for Homeland Security Investigations. The president of SEIU California, a major labor union, was arrested and charged for impeding a federal agent while protesting, the U.S. Attorney’s office said. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said the activity was meant to “sow terror” in the nation’s second-largest city.
CBS News [6/7/2025 9:15 PM, Austin Turner, 51860K] reports large-scale protests Saturday across Los Angeles in response to dozens of arrests Friday in an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation prompted a threat from President Trump for a federal response to those protests. "If Governor Gavin Newscum, of California, and Mayor Karen Bass, of Los Angeles, can’t do their jobs, which everyone knows they can’t, then the Federal Government will step in and solve the problem, RIOTS & LOOTERS, the way it should be solved!!!" the president posted to his Truth Social platform Saturday evening. The message came after Trump administration border czar Tom Homan said in an interview on Fox News earlier Saturday that "We’re going to bring National Guard in tonight. We’re going to continue doing our job. We’re going to push back on these people, and we’re going to enforce the law." In his own post to X in response to reports the National Guard may be deployed, California Gov. Newsom wrote that the "federal government is moving to take over the California National Guard and deploy 2,000 soldiers. That move is purposefully inflammatory and will only escalate tensions. LA authorities are able to access law enforcement assistance at a moment’s notice. We are in close coordination with the city and county, and there is currently no unmet need. The Guard has been admirably serving LA throughout recovery. This is the wrong mission and will erode public trust." Newsom also wrote that additional California Highway Patrol units were being deployed L.A. area highways to "keep the peace." "The federal government is sowing chaos so they can have an excuse to escalate," Newsom said. "That is not the way any civilized country behaves." [Editorial note: consult video at source link]

Newsweek: [CA] Acting ICE Director Addresses Los Angeles Protest Amid Nationwide Pushback
Newsweek [6/7/2025 5:31 PM, Peter Aitken, 52220K] reports Acting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Todd Lyons issued a statement on Saturday condemning the violence during protests in downtown Los Angeles that erupted during and after a series of federal immigration raids overnight. Since his inauguration in January, President Donald Trump has implemented sweeping change, mainly through executive orders, and has prioritized immigration control as a key pillar within the administration. Recently, the president utilized the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, a wartime law that grants the commander-in-chief authority to detain or deport non-citizens. The implementation was originally blocked in federal court and sparked a contentious legal back-and-forth. Trump also campaigned on the promise of mass deportations and appointed Tom Homan as his administration’s border czar to execute his agenda. Meanwhile, the confrontations in Los Angeles, a sanctuary city, highlight escalating disputes between federal immigration authorities and city officials over enforcement tactics, community safety, and sanctuary policies. Tensions ran high as ICE officers, carrying out an increased number of raids under federal policy, were met with anger and direct action from protesters and immigrant rights supporters. At least 44 people were arrested during the protests, during which officers used pepper spray and tear gas on the hundreds of protesters outside federal buildings, Reuters reported. Lyons stated that ICE personnel were in the city to arrest "criminal illegal aliens including gang members, drug traffickers and those with a history of assault, cruelty to children, domestic violence, robbery, and smuggling," and warned that "violent rioters will be held accountable if they harm federal officers." The LAPD during had declared an unlawful assembly near the intersection of Alameda and Temple streets after reports surfaced that some protesters had thrown concrete pieces at law enforcement. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino on Saturday called for calm amid the protests and warned that authorities will not hesitate to act if they feel that protesters have gone too far, writing on X that "the Right to assemble and protest does not include a license to attack law enforcement officers, or to impede and obstruct our lawful immigration operations." He added: "We are thoroughly reviewing the evidence from yesterday’s incident in Los Angeles and we are working with the US Attorney’s Office to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. The days of chaos ruling the streets are over. Either obey the law, or go to jail, there’s no third option." ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons said on Saturday in part: "These violent rioters will be held accountable if they harm federal officers, and make no mistake, ICE will continue to enforce our nation’s immigration laws and arrest criminal illegal aliens. Sanctuary politicians would do well to remember that impeding our efforts only endangers their communities, law enforcement officers, and the detainees they claim to support." Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem wrote on X: "A message to the LA rioters: you will not stop us or slow us down. [ICE] will continue to enforce the law. And if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law." Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin in a statement: "The violent targeting of law enforcement in Los Angeles by lawless rioters is despicable and Mayor Bass and Governor Newsom must call for it to end. The men and women of ICE put their lives on the line to protect and defend the lives of American citizens. Make no mistake, Democrat politicians like Hakeem Jeffries, Mayor Wu of Boston, Tim Walz, and Mayor Bass of Los Angeles are contributing to the surge in assaults of our ICE officers through their repeated vilification and demonization of ICE. From comparisons to the modern-day Nazi gestapo to glorifying rioters, the violent rhetoric of these sanctuary politicians is beyond the pale. This violence against ICE must end."
Los Angeles Times: Immigration raids roil L.A., dozens of people detained. What we know so far
Los Angeles Times [6/7/2025 3:52 PM, Kaitlyn Huamani, Clara Harter, Rachel Uranga, Rebecca Ellis, and Ruben Vives, 14672K] reports immigration raids Friday led to the arrests of dozens of people and caused hours of chaos in downtown L.A. Here is what we know so far: Federal agents hit several locations including the Ambiance Apparel in garment district, where many were detained and authorities clashed with protesters, and a Home Depot in the Westlake District. At Ambiance Apparel, immigration authorities detained employees inside a clothing wholesaler, and used flash-bang grenades and pepper spray on a crowd protesting the raid around 1:30 p.m. Friday. Agents surrounded the gates protesters had tried to block. Some threw objects at the agents, as they yelled and filmed them. To disperse the crowd, pepper spray was used. Forty-four people were administratively arrested and one person was arrested for obstruction during Friday’s immigration action, said Yasmeen Pitts O’Keefe, a spokesperson for Homeland Security Investigations, a branch of ICE. Federal agents executed four search warrants related to the suspected harboring of people illegally in the country at three locations in central Los Angeles, she said. Carlos González Gutiérrez, Consul General of Mexico in Los Angeles, said his team has identified at least 11 Mexican nationals who were detained during raids across the Southland. The office is offering them legal services, and he said he is monitoring detention conditions.
Daily Wire: ‘Kill ICE’: Foreign Flags And Fires Sweep LA As Riots Erupt Against Immigration Enforcement
Daily Wire [6/7/2025 4:15 PM, Tim Pearce, 3816K] reports Los Angeles and surrounding areas have exploded in riots as anti-immigration enforcement demonstrators, many touting foreign flags, set fires and attack federal officials. The Department of Homeland Security posted a video to social media on Saturday displaying some of the scenes from Los Angeles-area riots that have broken out over immigration enforcement operations taking place. The chaotic scenes from the riots are overlaid with remarks from Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass accusing federal immigration officials of sowing "a sense of terror" by arresting illegal aliens. "The violent targeting of law enforcement in Los Angeles by lawless protestors is despicable," Homeland Security said in a post. "Mayor Bass, ICE is not responsible for ‘sowing a sense of terror’ the protestors YOU enabled are.” Some of scenes from the video show graffiti messages such as "f*** ICE" next a symbol for Antifa, "Death to Colonialist Domination," "Death to Amerikka," and "Dead Cops" with a smiley face drawn into the "o" in "Cops.” The violent targeting of law enforcement in Los Angeles by lawless protestors is despicable. In a video shot in Compton, California, a demonstrator appears to be setting fire to a vehicle in an intersection while another person touting a Mexican flag stands nearby. A rioter injured at least one Customs and Border Patrol agent after pelting the agent’s vehicle with rocks, one of which smashed through the vehicle’s windshield and caused a bloody cut on the agent’s hand. I’m told one of the agents suffered a minor laceration to his hand as a result of a rock penetrating the windshield. Not major – but shows things could have been much worse if a few more rocks had come though as the windshield had cracked open. pic.twitter.com/UPknsi0vaj. A crowd of demonstrators surrounded a bus carrying federal agents. Protesters stood in front of the bus and acted as if attempting to push it back while the bus slowly crept forward. Some of the protesters in the area carried Mexican flags. U.S. Marshals are under attack on the streets of Los Angeles. Neither of the Los Angeles Sheriff nor the Los Angeles Police Department is assisting the outnumbered federal officers. On Friday, hundreds of people surrounded the Edward Roybal Federal Building in downtown Los Angeles. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) described the riot as "anti-ICE" and said its agents were "vastly outnumbered" by violent demonstrators. ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons said the Los Angeles Police Department "took over two hours" to respond to requests for assistance as the federal building was attacked and ICE agents were threatened. A message left in the wake of the riot read "Kill ICE" along with an Antifa symbol.

Telemundo52 [6/8/2025 1:46 AM, Helen Jeong, 103K] reports that, as the Trump administration repels protesters in the wake of widespread immigration raids in Los Angeles, federal police showed up in full force to disperse the crowd in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday. After another clash between protesters and federal officials outside the Home Depot store in Paramount on Saturday morning, a large group began gathering outside the Metropolitan Detention Center, where undocumented immigrants were being held. As the crowd grew, dozens of federal police officers poured out of the building, firing pepper spray and stun grenades to aggressively repel the protesters. The Los Angeles Police Department declared an unlawful assembly Saturday night and removed federal immigration raid protesters from the streets. Police marched side-by-side and then formed a line as they confronted the protesters, who remained despite being told they had five minutes to leave the area on Alameda Street between Aliso and Temple streets. Meanwhile, the National Guard was being deployed for possible additional encounters with the protesters. The White House confirmed Saturday that President Donald Trump signed a directive to deploy 2,000 National Guard members to address the lawlessness. "The Trump administration has a zero-tolerance policy for crime and violence, especially when that violence is directed against law enforcement officers trying to do their jobs," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. Breitbart: Trump’s Deputies Warn L.A. Rioters of Pending Arrests
Breitbart [6/7/2025 11:36 PM, Neil Munro, 3077K] reports President Donald Trump and his deputies repeatedly warned rioters they would be arrested, hours before the administration sent 2,000 National Guard troops to quell the pro-migration, anti-enforcement violence. "If Governor Gavin Newscum, of California, and Mayor Karen Bass, of Los Angeles, can’t do their jobs, which everyone knows they can’t, then the Federal Government will step in and solve the problem, RIOTS & LOOTERS, the way it should be solved!!!," Trump announced at 7:00 o.m. Saturday. "It doesn’t matter if you’re a judge, a member of Congress, or a protester in Los Angeles: If you obstruct or assault a law enforcement officer, this Department of Justice will prosecute you," said Attorney General Pam Bondi. The federal intervention came after 24 hours of elite-backed, left-wing street violence against the law enforcement officials who are enforcing the nation’s border and workplace laws. "Our brave officers were vastly outnumbered, as over 1,000 rioters surrounded and attacked a federal building," said acting ICE director Todd Lyons: It took over two hours for the Los Angeles Police Department to respond, despite being called multiple times. The brave men and women of ICE were in Los Angeles arresting criminal illegal aliens including gang members, drug traffickers and those with a history of assault, cruelty to children, domestic violence, robbery, and smuggling. The rioters attacked law-enforcement officers from ICE and other agencies as they picked up employers’ wage-cutting illegal migrants at several worksites in the vast city. The city’s leaders and police did little as organized pro-migration rioters attacked federal officials, vehicles, and buildings. The street violence is tacitly backed — and indirectly funded — by nationwide networks of pro-migration elites who want to portray the federal government’s popular and orderly removal operations as frightful "chaos.” Trump’s law-and-order response to the elite-backed chaos echoes the response from his elected administration. "We’re making Los Angeles safer," said border czar Tom Homan. "This is about enforcing the law, and again, we’re not going to apologize for it.” The riots are "an insurrection against the laws and sovereignty of the United States," said Trump’s top aide, Stephen Miller. "We will not stand for this," said Kristi Noem, chief of the Department of Homeland Security, after the city’s Democratic Mayor, Karen Bass, denounced the ICE arrests. "ANY attack on our agents or officers will not be tolerated," said Michal Banks, chief of the U.S. Border Patrol."You will be arrested and federally prosecuted.”
ABC News: Multiple people detained after LAPD dispersal order issued
ABC News [6/8/2025 4:20 AM, Jessica Gorman, 31733K] reports multiple people were detained after reentering an area the Los Angeles Police Department had ordered them to leave, the department said. "Those detained will be arrested and booked for failing to disperse from an area where an unlawful assembly was ordered," the department’s Central Division said in a statement posted on social media at midnight. An order to disperse had been issued about three hours prior. The division said "multiple" people were detained on Alameda Street between Aliso and Temple streets, which are near the local office of the U.S. Justice Department, on the eastern side of Downtown Los Angeles. Police officials didn’t say how many people had been taken into custody.

Breitbart [6/7/2025 6:56 PM, Elizabeth Weibel, 3077K] reports a protester was seen hurling rocks at U.S. Border Patrol vehicles in California, as protests broke out between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and leftist protesters. In a video posted to X, a protester wearing a helmet is seen throwing several rocks at vehicles passing by, including Border Patrol vehicles. Another protester dressed in all black also appears to throw rocks at the vehicles passing by. Per the Los Angeles Times, protesters and ICE agents got into a "confrontation near a Home Depot" in Paramount, which "escalated into a fiery and tumultuous clash" with at least one injury: “The confrontation near a Home Depot at 6400 Alondra Boulevard escalated into a fiery and tumultuous clash. At least one protester was injured, witnesses reported. Chants of ‘fuera ICE’ — ICE, get out — could be heard as flash-bang grenades deployed by federal agents lit up the scene. A Times reporter watched one protester gather a bag of trash and light it on fire in the middle of Alondra Boulevard, half a block away from where immigration agents were gathered.” Protesters reportedly “gathered along Alondra Boulevard after reports that” ICE officials "were targeting people at a Home Depot," according to the outlet. In response to the video of the person throwing rocks at Border Patrol vehicles, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino warned the individual to turn themselves in, adding that it was "only a matter of time" because the person was identified and caught. "We are currently seeking information regarding the identity of the person(s) throwing rocks at vehicles conducting critical law enforcement operations," Bongino wrote in a post on X. "One of the perpetrators in this video is wearing a helmet, and we’re going to use our investigative tools to locate the individual. I strongly suggest you turn yourself in, it’s only a matter of time.”
The Hill: White House slams LA ‘insurrection’ as protests erupt over deportation raids
The Hill [6/7/2025 5:20 PM, Ashleigh Fields, 18649K] reports the White House slammed protests in Los Angeles on Saturday after some residents expressed outrage over raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Stephen Miller, White House deputy chief of staff, described demonstrations at the city’s federal building as an "insurrection.". "An insurrection against the laws and sovereignty of the United States," Miller wrote in a Saturday post online. Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin said more than 800 protesters gathered to challenge the arrest of dozens of individuals by "assaulting ICE enforcement officers, slashing tires, defacing buildings" on Friday. Demonstrations continued near the sites of raids on Saturday, with authorities also conducting a raid in the nearby Paramount. McLaughlin said Los Angeles Police did not respond to the incident on Friday. "A message to the LA rioters: you will not stop us or slow us down. @ICEgov will continue to enforce the law," Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem wrote on the social media platform X Saturday. "And if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," she added. McLaughlin said there’s been an uptick in assault on law enforcement officers across the country. "Our ICE enforcement officers are facing a 413% increase in assaults against them. And we have seen, in recent days, their family members being doxxed and targeted, as well," she wrote on Saturday. "Make no mistake, politicians like @RepJeffries, @AOC, and @Tim_Walz are contributing to the assaults of our officers through vilification and demonization—calling ICE the modern day Nazi gestapo and calling for their doxxing," she added.
New York Post: Trump rips ‘incompetent’ Newsom, LA Mayor Bass amid riots over immigration raids, says masks not allowed at protests
New York Post [6/8/2025 4:57 AM, Nicholas McEntyre, 49956K] reports President Trump ripped into California’s "incompetent" leadership and called for a ban on face coverings as masked protesters clashed with federal agents conducting immigration raids across Los Angeles. Trump called out California Gov. Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass for their alleged mishandling of violent riots in response to the ICE raids that wrangled up over 100 illegal immigrants — including gang bangers and drug traffickers — this past week. "We have an incompetent Governor (Newscum) and Mayor (Bass) who were, as usual (just look at how they handled the fires, and now their VERY SLOW PERMITTING disaster. Federal permitting is complete!), unable to handle the task," Trump wrote on TruthSocial Sunday morning. Rioters caused carnage in the streets of Los Angeles County on Saturday, which forced Trump to call for 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles despite Newsom’s objections. The troops were set to arrive in the area within 24 hours, US Attorney for the Central District of California Bill Essayli told New York Times. The violent protesters burned down cars, lit fires, threw rocks and fireworks at police and graffitiied vulgar phrases including "F–K ICE" and "KILL ICE.” Trump blasted the nameless protesters as "troublemakers" and called for a ban on face coverings as the violent demonstrations wreak havoc in California. "These Radical Left protests, by instigators and often paid troublemakers, will NOT BE TOLERATED. Also, from now on, MASKS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to be worn at protests," Trump said. "What do these people have to hide, and why?" he questioned. Footage captured a chaotic scene in Paramount, Calif., as hundreds of protesters filled the streets and faced off against federal agents in riot gear, in an attempt to impede apprehensions by Border Patrol near a Home Depot. Law enforcement agents fired tear gas at the restless crowd. One violent protester in a face-covering helmet hurled rocks at the windows of cars right outside the super store — cracking some Border Patrol pick-up trucks in the windshield, according to viral video. At least a dozen "agitators" were arrested Saturday for their involvement in the unrest, Essayli announced. Homeland Security Secretary Krisi Noem warned rioters of arrests if they harmed law enforcement officers. Trump praised the National Guard troops he had called in to take over crowd control operations to quell the unrest. "Great job by the National Guard in Los Angeles after two days of violence, clashes and unrest," Trump wrote.
Breitbart: ‘Deranged’: Newsom Fumes as Trump Federalizes National Guard, Threatens to Deploy Marines to Quell Anti-ICE Riots
Breitbart [6/8/2025 2:13 AM, Joel B. Pollak, 3077K] reports California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) took his frustrations to social media on Saturday as President Donald Trump federalized 2,000 California National Guard troops to quell anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles. Trump sent in the National Guard after two days of rioting in which black-clad radicals attacked federal law enforcement officials who were arresting illegal aliens in the city. The rioters set fire to cars, tagged federal buildings with graffiti, and attacked federal officers. City and state officials did little to stop the violence, other than offering their support for "immigrants" and criticizing the Trump administration. Newsom was furious — especially after the administration hinted that Marines, too, could be deployed: "First Partner" Jennifer Siebel Newsom weighed in, and the governor reposted her comment as well: Newsom did little to stop the riots in 2020, when Black Lives Matter activists trashed the city for days.
ABC News: LA mayor calls reports of unrest outside the city ‘deeply concerning’
ABC News [6/7/2025 11:24 PM, Staff, 31733K] reports LA Mayor Karen Bass, who condemned the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement actions on Friday as stoking fear, called reports of unrest Saturday outside the city limits disturbing. "This is a difficult time for our city," Bass said in a statement on X. "As we recover from an unprecedented natural disaster, many in our community are feeling fear following recent federal immigration enforcement actions across Los Angeles County. Reports of unrest outside the city, including in Paramount, are deeply concerning. We’ve been in direct contact with officials in Washington, D.C., and are working closely with law enforcement to find the best path forward. Everyone has the right to peacefully protest, but let me be clear: violence and destruction are unacceptable, and those responsible will be held accountable."
Politico: Los Angeles Democrats clash with Trump administration amid ICE crackdown
Politico [6/7/2025 7:52 PM, Giselle Ruhiyyih Ewing, 16523K] reports California Democrats and Trump administration officials are locked in a battle over a wave of immigration raids targeting Los Angeles this week, as protests over the detentions swelled in the Democratic stronghold amid President Donald Trump’s broader immigration crackdown. Tom Homan, the White House border czar, told Fox News on Saturday that immigration enforcement was making Los Angeles safer and that, amid protests, “we’re gonna bring National Guard in tonight.” Federal agents in tactical gear appeared during protests on Friday afternoon against the detention of over 40 individuals in immigration sweeps across Los Angeles earlier in the day, sparking clashes between officers and protesters that turned violent and resulted in police throwing tear gas canisters in the middle of the crowd. As the situation escalated, the president of the labor union SEIU California, David Huerta, was arrested, sustaining injuries during his detainment that required brief hospitalization, according to a statement from the union. A video of Huerta’s arrest shows officers knocking the labor union president to the ground. Following Friday’s clash, a group of Democratic members of Congress from the Los Angeles area said they were barred on Saturday from visiting the federal building where people in immigration detention were reportedly being held. “The reports of what is happening inside the Roybal Federal Building is a complete violation of our laws and a stain on our values as a country,” Rep. Luz Rivas (D-Calif.) said in a statement. “The Trump Administration blocked my colleagues and me from conducting our congressional oversight duties into the reported abuses and neglect that is taking place at this facility.” According to a statement from SEIU on Friday evening, Huerta was released from the hospital but remains in custody. U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli — a former lightning-rod Republican lawmaker — posted on X that he will be arraigned in federal court on Monday. “What happened to me is not about me; This is about something much bigger,” Huerta said in a statement. “Hard-working people, and members of our family and our community, are being treated like criminals. We all collectively have to object to this madness because this is not justice. This is injustice. And we all have to stand on the right side of justice.” Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that the situation that unfolded was a direct result of the “repeated vilification and demonization of ICE” by Democratic politicians, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. “The violent targeting of law enforcement in Los Angeles by lawless rioters is despicable and Mayor Bass and Governor Newsom must call for it to end. The men and women of ICE put their lives on the line to protect and defend the lives of American citizens,” McLaughlin said, adding that the “violent rhetoric” of “sanctuary politicians is beyond the pale.”
Blaze/Univision: Union president reportedly detained and injured in ICE raids in Los Angeles
Blaze [6/7/2025 6:30 AM, Carlos Garcia, 1805K] reports the president of one of the largest unions in California was detained in an ICE raid, and the union says that he was injured as well. A statement from SEIU California said that their president, David Huerta, was detained and was getting medical care but did not offer any other details. They demanded his release, as reports claimed that numerous raids were being performed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Los Angeles. Democrat Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued a statement decrying the ICE raids in general.
Univision [6/7/2025 12:14 PM, Staff, 4992K] reports SEIU California and SEIU-United Service Workers West President David Huerta was injured and detained Friday during a series of raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in downtown Los Angeles. The incident has generated a wave of indignation among unions, state authorities and civil rights advocates, who denounce the excessive use of force and the criminalization of peaceful protest. According to witnesses and videos posted on social networks, Huerta was observing and documenting ICE operations when he was pushed by a federal agent, causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head. He was transported to the hospital for medical attention and later taken to the Metropolitan Detention Center, where he remained in custody. The raids that day culminated in the arrests of at least 44 people and sparked massive demonstrations in the streets of downtown Los Angeles. Protesters denounced the indiscriminate nature of the arrests, while ICE agents used pepper spray and smoke grenades to disperse the crowd. The SEIU, which represents more than 750,000 workers in California, strongly condemned the actions of federal authorities. “ICE picked the wrong side. The wrong state. The wrong person. And the wrong union,” SEIU wrote on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, where the post surpassed 949,000 views. In a statement released after his hospitalization, Huerta said, “This is not about me. It’s about how we resist together, as a community, in the face of injustice. Our family members and neighbors are being treated like criminals. This is not justice. This is injustice.
Los Angeles Times: ICE arrested a California union leader. Does Trump understand what that means?
Los Angeles Times [6/7/2025 3:06 PM, Anita Chabria, 14672K] reports unions in California are different from those in other places. More than any state in our troubled country, their ranks are filled with people of color and immigrants. While unions have always been tied closely with the struggles of civil rights, that has become even more pronounced in the years since George Floyd was killed by a police officer in Minneapolis.
where that conversation has largely broken down for general society under the pressure of President Trump’s right-wing rage, it took hold inside of unions to a much greater degree — leading to more leadership from people of color, sometimes younger leadership and definitely an understanding from the rank and file that these are organizations that fight far beyond the workplace. Which is why the arrest of David Huerta, president of SEIU-USWW and SEIU California, by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Friday is going to have a major impact on the coming months as deportations continue. "They have woke us up," Tia Orr told me Saturday morning. She’s the executive director of the 700,000-strong Service Employees International Union California, of which Huerta is a part, and the first African American and Latina to lead the organization. "And I think they’ve woke people up across the nation, certainly in California, and people are ready to get to action," she added. "I haven’t seen that in a long time. I don’t know that I’ve seen something like that before, and so yes, it is going to result in action that I believe is going to be historical." While unions have voiced their disapproval of mass deportations since the MAGA threat first manifested, the unions’ might has not gone full force against them, taking instead a bit of a wait-and-see approach.
The Hill: Bongino, Patel defend ICE amid unrest over Los Angeles raids
The Hill [6/7/2025 3:23 PM, Ashleigh Fields, 18649K] reports FBI director Kash Patel and deputy director Dan Bongino defended four Los Angeles raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after Democrats said the effort was sparking terror in the city. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials said more than 800 gathered to protest the arrests of dozens including a local labor union president. The large group breached the first layer of a federal law enforcement building in Los Angeles and sprayed graffiti on cars, per a DHS official. "The Right to assemble and protest does not include a license to attack law enforcement officers, or to impede and obstruct our lawful immigration operations," Bongino wrote in a Saturday post on X, stating the agency is investigating the incident. "The days of chaos ruling the streets are over. Either obey the law, or go to jail, there’s no third option," he added. Patel taunted Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D-Calif.) who shared a post declaring that she wouldn’t stand for the law enforcement efforts that "deeply angered" her and other constituents. The FBI chief responded in a quote tweet with the statement, "We will."
Daily Wire: ‘You Bring Chaos, We’ll Bring Handcuffs’: Dan Bongino Responds To Protests At Los Angeles ICE Raids
Daily Wire [6/7/2025 1:01 PM, Virginia Kruta, 3816K] reports FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino weighed in after Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids at several locations across the greater Los Angeles area erupted into clashes — some of them violent — between federal agents and protesters. After the FBI had to be called in on at least one such confrontation on Friday, Bongino made it clear in a post on X that federal agents would not be deterred from doing their jobs — and he promised that anyone who attempted to interfere with them doing their jobs would face consequences. "The Right to assemble and protest does not include a license to attack law enforcement officers, or to impede and obstruct our lawful immigration operations," Bongino said. "We are thoroughly reviewing the evidence from yesterday’s incident in Los Angeles and we are working with the US Attorney’s Office to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. The days of chaos ruling the streets are over. Either obey the law, or go to jail, there’s no third option." Bongino followed that with a second post confirming that some of those who had attempted to disrupt the ICE raids on Friday had already been arrested. "And yes, multiple arrests have already been made for obstructing our operations. More are coming. We are pouring through the videos for more perpetrators," he added. "You bring chaos, and we’ll bring handcuffs. Law and order will prevail.". And the arrests continued on Saturday, as Fox LA reporter Matthew Seedorff shared video of protesters clashing with ICE agents at what turned out to be a staging area for operations near Paramount, California.
FOX News: Patel promises FBI coming for anyone assaulting cops as Los Angeles erupts over ICE raids
FOX News [6/7/2025 11:10 PM, Alexandra Koch, 46878K] reports that, following violent anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles on Saturday night, FBI Director Kash Patel warned "if you assault a law enforcement officer, you’re going to jail—period.” "It doesn’t matter where you came from, how you got here, or what cause you claim to represent," Patel told Fox News Digital. "If local jurisdictions won’t stand behind the men and women who wear the badge, the FBI will.” President Donald Trump signed a Presidential Memorandum deploying 2,000 National Guardsmen to Paramount, California after immigration authorities driving in the area were pelted with rocks, stones, and concrete — shattering government vehicle windshields. U.S. Border Patrol Chief Michael W. Banks shared a photo of one Border Patrol agent’s bloody hand, which was injured by a rock flying through the windshield. Federal sources said agents could have been killed by the flying debris. "Doesn’t matter where you came from, how you got here, or what movement speaks to you. If the local police force won’t back our men and women on the thin blue line, we @FBI will," Patel wrote on X. The bureau has an entire force dedicated to immigration, with its highest concentration in Los Angeles. Several arrests have already been made for assault on a federal agent, Banks confirmed. The fiery Paramount protest marked the second consecutive day of substantial violent riots in Los Angeles. On Friday night, more than 1,000 Los Angeles rioters surrounded a federal law enforcement building and assaulted ICE agents, slashed tires, and defaced buildings. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said protesters would not slow ICE agents down, and cautioned rioters. "If you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," Noem wrote in an X post. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said the agency is seeking information regarding the identity of those throwing rocks at vehicles conducting critical law enforcement operations, noting "it is only a matter of time.” "One of the perpetrators in this video is wearing a helmet, and we’re going to use our investigative tools to locate the individual," Bongino wrote in an X post. "I strongly suggest you turn yourself in, it’s only a matter of time." [Editorial note: consult video at source link]
FOX Business: Federal agency leaving Los Angeles due to Democratic mayor ‘siding with illegal aliens’ over law enforcement
FOX Business [6/7/2025 9:04 PM, Alexandra Koch, 9940K] reports the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced Saturday it will relocate its regional office from Los Angeles due to the city’s lack of cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In response to an X post Friday by Mayor Karen Bass, SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler said the agency will "immediately" be moving out of the L.A. area. "Los Angeles is openly refusing to cooperate with ICE - siding with illegal aliens over American citizens and small businesses. Therefore, effective immediately, @SBAgov will begin relocating its Regional Office out of L.A.," Loeffler wrote in an X post. "If a city won’t protect its people, we won’t stay.” Multiple people were detained by immigration agents Friday as seven locations in Los Angeles were raided, bringing the weekly total of illegal immigrant arrests to nearly 120. In response, violent protests broke out across the county, including an attempted break-in at the Roybal Federal Building. The Los Angeles Police Department did not respond for several hours despite receiving multiple calls. More than 1,000 rioters surrounded the building and assaulted ICE law enforcement officers, slashed tires and defaced buildings and taxpayer-funded property, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). "The violent targeting of law enforcement in Los Angeles by lawless rioters is despicable, and Mayor Bass and Governor Newsom must call for it to end," DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin wrote in a statement. "From comparisons to the modern-day Nazi gestapo to glorifying rioters, the violent rhetoric of these sanctuary politicians is beyond the pale. This violence against ICE must end.” In a statement Friday, Bass criticized federal immigration enforcement actions in Los Angeles. "As mayor of a proud city of immigrants who contribute to our city in so many ways, I am deeply angered by what has taken place," Bass said. "These tactics sow terror in our communities and disrupt basic principles of safety in our city. My office is in close coordination with immigrant rights community organizations. We will not stand for this.” As of Saturday night, Bass had yet to denounce violent riots in her jurisdiction and safety concerns raised by federal authorities. The mayor’s office did not immediately respond to Fox Business’ request for comment. [Editorial note: consult video at source link]
FOX News: Social media, Trump admin erupts over LA mayor’s reaction to ICE raids: ‘You’re a criminal too’
FOX News [6/7/2025 11:55 AM, Staff, 46878K] reports Democratic Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass faced backlash on social media Friday, including from members of the Trump administration, for pushing back on Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids targeting illegal immigrants in her city. "As Mayor of a proud city of immigrants, who contribute to our city in so many ways, I am deeply angered by what has taken place. These tactics sow terror in our communities and disrupt basic principles of safety in our city. My Office is in close coordination with immigrant rights community organizations. We will not stand for this." The mayor’s statement, which garnered over two million impressions on X, drew immediate pushback from conservatives, with many pointing out criticisms of her leadership, preparedness, and response to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles earlier this year that killed 30 people. The Associated Press reported that immigration advocates confirmed at least 45 people had been arrested across seven locations. As the protests grew on Friday evening, and law enforcement in riot gear had to be brought in to calm the crowds, Bass drew even more criticism online from users accusing her of stirring up protesters. Adding to the controversy, the Los Angeles Police Department issued a statement that it was not getting involved with deportations or immigration enforcement. That position drew criticism on social media, including from Assistant Secretary Dept. of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin.
New York Post: More than 20 arrested in NYC as mob tries to block feds from conducting immigration raids
New York Post [6/7/2025 4:47 PM, Georgia Worrell and Anna Young, 49956K] reports more than 20 people were arrested Saturday as a mob of nearly 150 protesters cursed at cops and tried to block federal authorities from conducting immigration raids in Lower Manhattan, according to a police source, federal officials and video from the chaotic scene. The angry, masked demonstrators yelled “motherf–kers” at officers, sat in the roadway, threw objects and even themselves in front of an unmarked white van with tinted windows as it tried to leave 26 Federal Plaza, where the US Immigration Court is housed. “Back up, back up!” six uniformed Department of Homeland Security officers yelled while shoving the agitators aside, footage of the incident showed. Demonstrators hauled metal barricades, orange traffic cones and even fished a drawerless dresser from a nearby dumpster to throw into the street in an attempt to block the van, but cops quickly moved it out of the way. Tricia McLaughlin, DHS’s assistant secretary for public affairs, praised police for quickly responding to the riotous scene and arresting the agitators after “rioters” interfered with ICE’s immigration enforcement operations. “Secretary (Kristi) Noem’s message to rioters is clear: you will not stop us or slow us down,” McLaughlin said in a statement to The Post. “ICE will continue to enforce the law. And if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” A similar scene erupted in Los Angeles, California, as violent protests against federal immigration raids broke out for a second straight day. Tom Homan, ICE’s Acting Director, said the National Guard would be mobilizing Saturday evening to combat the chaos. ICE didn’t immediately respond to The Post request for comment. Wall Street Journal: DOJ: Kilmar Abrego Garcia Brought Back to U.S. to Face Criminal Charges
Wall Street Journal [6/7/2025 4:59 PM, Staff, 646K] reports Attorney General Pam Bondi said Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador, was brought back to the U.S. to face criminal charges. [Editorial note: consult video at source link]
AP: Kilmar Abrego Garcia is back in the US, charged with human smuggling as attorneys vow ongoing fight
AP [6/7/2025 2:05 PM, Ben Findley, 56000K] reports to hear the Trump administration tell it, Kilmar Abrego Garcia smuggled thousands of people across the country who were living in the U.S. illegally, including members of the violent MS-13 gang, long before his mistaken deportation to El Salvador. In allegations made public nearly three months after his removal, U.S. officials say Abrego Garcia abused the women he transported, while a co-conspirator alleged he participated in a gang-related killing in his native El Salvador. Abrego Garcia’s wife and lawyers offer a much different story. They say the now 29-year-old had as a teenager fled local gangs that terrorized his family in El Salvador for a life in Maryland. He found work in construction, got married and was raising three children with disabilities before he was mistakenly deported in March. The fight became a political flashpoint in the administration’s stepped-up immigration enforcement. Now it returns to the U.S. court system, where Abrego Garcia appeared Friday after being returned from El Salvador. He faces new charges related to a large human smuggling operation and is in federal custody in Tennessee. Speaking to NBC’s Kristen Welken in a phone interview Saturday President Donald Trump said it was not his decision to bring Abrego Garcia back. “The Department of Justice decided to do it that way, and that’s fine,” he said. “There are two ways you could have done it, and they decided to do it that way.” Trump said it should “be a very easy case.” In announcing Abrego Garcia’s return Attorney General Pam Bondi called him “a smuggler of humans and children and women” in announcing the unsealing of a grand jury indictment. His lawyers say a jury won’t believe the “preposterous” allegations.
Wall Street Journal: Abrego Garcia Returns to U.S. After Mistaken Deportation. Here’s What’s Next.
Wall Street Journal [6/7/2025 3:15 PM, Mariah Timms and Sadie Gurman, 646K] reports the Trump administration on Friday brought Kilmar Abrego Garcia back to the U.S. to face criminal charges that he was a key player in an international smuggling ring with gang ties. That marks the end of one chapter in a monthslong legal saga in which the government said the mistakenly deported Maryland man was a violent gang member. It had presented limited evidence for that claim. On Friday, the government provided new details supporting its allegations, but it also faces new hurdles to securing a conviction. President Trump said in an interview with NBC News on Saturday that while it hadn’t been his decision to bring Abrego Garcia back, prosecuting him on the new charges “should be a very easy case.” Defense attorneys will likely argue that Abrego Garcia was targeted for political reasons after the Trump administration accidentally deported him and then refused to bring him back, despite judicial orders including from the Supreme Court. His lawyers could point to statements by senior officials—including President Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi—demonizing Abrego Garcia, to argue that has tainted any potential jury pool. Abrego Garcia appeared in court in Nashville on Friday evening. A judge determined that he will be held in custody until late next week, when there will be a hearing about whether to keep him in detention, according to the Associated Press. Prosecutors are trying to paint Abrego Garcia as a violent gang member with a history of domestic abuse, but a judge could still decide to release him on bond if persuaded that he wouldn’t be a flight risk or a danger to other people. Abrego Garcia has no known convictions in the U.S., held a full-time job as a sheet metal apprentice and has a wife and children in the U.S.
Reuters: Trump says Department of Justice made decision to bring back Abrego Garcia
Reuters [6/7/2025 3:20 PM, Ismail Shakil and Michael Martina, 51390K] reports U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday it was the Department of Justice, not him, that made the decision to bring back to the U.S. a man mistakenly deported from Maryland to El Salvador. Kilmar Abrego Garcia was flown back to face criminal charges of transporting illegal immigrants within the U.S., Attorney General Pam Bondi said on Friday. His return marked an inflection point in a case seized on by critics of Trump’s immigration crackdown as a sign that his administration was disregarding civil liberties in its push to step up deportations of migrants. "Well, that wasn’t my decision. The Department of Justice decided to do it that way, and that’s fine," Trump told NBC News in an interview when asked about Abrego Garcia’s return. Trump added that he had not spoken to El Salvador President Nayib Bukele about the move.
The Hill: Trump signals case against Abrego Garcia will be ‘very easy’
The Hill [6/7/2025 2:43 PM, Steff Danielle Thomas, 18649K] reports President Trump on Saturday said the Justice Department’s (DOJ) latest case against Kilmar Abrego Garcia — the man mistakenly deported to El Salvador earlier this year amid Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration — should be "very easy" for prosecutors. The comment comes after news broke Friday that Abrego Garcia would return to the U.S. to face smuggling charges stemming from a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee. Asked about the administration’s seeming reversal in bringing the man home, the president gave full credit to DOJ. "The Department of Justice decided to do it that way, and that’s fine," Trump told NBC News in a phone call Saturday, adding, "that wasn’t my decision." But, he told the outlet, "It should be a very easy case. Attorney General Pam Bondi on Friday took a victory lap over the case. "Our government presented El Salvador with an arrest warrant, and they agreed to return him to our country," she told reporters during a news conference. "The grand jury found that over the past nine years, Abrego Garcia has played a significant role in an alien smuggling ring." The DOJ chief also noted that once a trial is complete, Abrego Garcio once again be deported to El Salvador.

The Hill: Blumenthal casts doubt on Abrego Garcia prosecution: ‘Charges are not evidence’’
The Hill [6/7/2025 2:18 PM, Filip Timotija, 18649K] reports Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) cast doubt on the prosecution of Kilmar Abrego Garcia upon his return to the U.S. following his mistaken deportation to El Salvador, claiming that "charges are not evidence." "These charges have to be regarded with a very hefty dose of skepticism, in light of the timing, and all of the attendant circumstances," Blumenthal said during a Friday night appearance on CNN’s "The Source." "The administration has no right to bring charges simply as an offramp, or a face-saver. And now it’s going to have to, in effect, put up and shut up, put its evidence where its mouth is." "And I’ve heard again and again and again, as a prosecutor, as a United States attorney, federal prosecutor, as well as state attorney general, charges are not evidence," he told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins. "And so far, we’ve seen no evidence." The probe originates from when Abrego Garcia was pulled over by the Tennessee Highway Patrol in late 2022 for speeding. The van was full of passengers without any luggage, prompting questions from the officer on-site, according to the video of the stop. Abrego Garcia said to authorities that he was transporting construction workers to Missouri, but in reality was transporting undocumented migrants, the indictment alleges. "For the last 2 months, the media and Democrats have burnt to the ground any last shred of credibility they had left as they glorified Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a known MS13 gang member, human trafficker, and serial domestic abuser," the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Kristi Noem said in a statement to The Hill on Saturday. "Now, the United States of America confronts Kilmar Abrego Garcia with overwhelming evidence— he is being indicted by a grand jury for human smuggling, including children, and conspiracy. Justice awaits this Salvadoran man," Noem added.

Axios: What to know about counterprotests to Trump’s June 14 parade
Axios [6/7/2025 4:19 PM, April Rubin, 13599K] reports protestors are taking to the streets and community hubs nationwide on June 14 in what organizers expect will be the largest single-day anti-President Trump rally since the start of the administration. The widespread movement will run counter to Trump’s multimillion dollar military parade in D.C. "No Kings is a nationwide day of defiance," organizers wrote. "From city blocks to small towns, from courthouse steps to community parks, we’re taking action to reject authoritarianism." More than 100 pro-democracy advocacy groups are partnering to organize the No Kings events. Millions of people are estimated to protest in more than 1,500 cities across all 50 states and commonwealths, organizers said.
FOX Business: Judge blocks Trump admin’s move to withhold certain federal funding from Denver
FOX Business [6/7/2025 1:20 PM, Rachel Wolf and Stephen Sorace, 9940K] reports a federal judge handed Denver, Colo., a financial win after ruling against the Trump administration in a lawsuit over federal funding. The administration had threatened to withhold $4 billion in federal transportation grants. Denver and other local governments argued that in its threat, the Trump administration issued "unlawful and politically motivated funding conditions." The requirements came from a memo issued by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy in April. In the memo, Duffy informed recipients that they were required to comply with federal policies on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). "Against this backdrop, [the] plaintiffs argue that in attempting to condition disbursement of funds in part on grounds not authorized by Congress, but rather on Executive Branch policy, Defendants are acting in violation of the Separation of Powers principle," the order granting the preliminary injunction read. Denver Mayor Mike Johnston celebrated the ruling and expressed gratitude for the court’s quick action on the matter.
NewsMax: Democrats Take on Trump Over Immigration
NewsMax [6/7/2025 4:47 PM, Solange Reyner, 4622K] reports Democrats are wading boldly into the immigration debate despite concerns of political fallout as they take on President Donald Trump over one of his most potent issues with voters, reported the Hill. They have rallied behind Kilmar Abrego-Garcia, the Salvadoran man who the Trump administration said was mistakenly deported in March, and Rep. LaMonica McIver, D-N.J., who was charged by the Justice Department with allegedly assaulting law enforcement based on footage of her appearing to elbow an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer outside a migrant detention facility in Newark earlier this month. "Every single ICE agent who is engaged in this aggressive overreach and are trying to hide their identities from the American people will be unsuccessful in doing that," House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., recently told reporters in the Capitol of the incident with McIver. "This is America," he added. "This is not the Soviet Union. We’re not behind the Iron Curtain. This is not the 1930s. And every single one of them — no matter what it takes, no matter how long it takes — will, of course, be identified." After Abrego-Garcia returned to the U.S. Friday to face federal human trafficking charges in Tennessee, Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., celebrated.
FOX News: Trump admin cracks down antisemitism as DOJ official exposes ‘violent rhetoric’ of radical protesters
FOX News [6/7/2025 7:30 AM, Ashley Oliver, 46878K] reports the Trump administration has taken a more aggressive approach than its predecessor toward addressing the nationwide surge in antisemitic incidents, launching investigations, punishing elite universities, and intensifying its immigration enforcement practices. President Donald Trump, through the Department of Justice (DOJ) and other agencies, is using law-and-order tactics that his deputies say are necessary but that critics say could constitute overreach. Harmeet Dhillon, the DOJ’s assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division, told Fox News Digital she has not seen any "close cases" when it comes to weighing antisemitic behavior against First Amendment rights of those who oppose Israel or Judaism. Dhillon added that "that type of violent rhetoric has led to violent acts in our country." After Hamas’s deadly terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, the FBI’s hate crime statistics showed a sharp spike in anti-Jewish incidents in the U.S. The data runs through December 2023. Anti-Defamation League (ADL) data from 2024 and high-profile incidents this year suggest the trend is continuing.
FOX News: Continued court fights could put Harvard in unwinnable position vs Trump
FOX News [6/7/2025 7:00 AM, Breanne Deppisch, 46878K] reports a federal judge in Massachusetts on Thursday granted Harvard University’s emergency request to block, for now, the Trump administration’s effort to ban international students from its campus, siding with Harvard in ruling that the university would likely suffer "immediate and irreparable harm" if enforced. The temporary restraining order from U.S. District Judge Allison D. Burroughs blocks the administration from immediately stripping Harvard of its certification status under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, or SEVP — a program run by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that allows universities to sponsor international students for U.S. visas. Burroughs said in her order that Harvard has demonstrated evidence it "will suffer immediate and irreparable injury before there is an opportunity to hear from all parties," prompting her to temporarily block the SEVP revocation. Still, some see the order as a mere Band-Aid, forestalling a larger court fight between Harvard and the Trump administration — and one that Trump critics say could be unfairly weighted against the nation’s oldest university.
Washington Post: Trump vs. Harvard has international athletes scrambling for answers
Washington Post [6/7/2025 9:22 AM, Jesse Dougherty and Emily Giambalvo, 32099K] reports not long after President Donald Trump’s first attempt to bar Harvard from enrolling international students last month, the school’s men’s soccer team, along with athletic teams all over campus, received a note from the coaching staff. They were monitoring the situation, the coaches said. The school was monitoring it, too. Everyone, it seemed, was monitoring a situation that had gone haywire in mid-May, but that provided no immediate clarity on what it meant for athletes with student visas. But despite any temporary relief, the political battle has clouded the present and short-term future for some of Harvard’s athletes and teams. For the 2024-25 academic year, 139 athletes listed international hometowns on team rosters, accounting for 17 percent of all athletes on those squads, according to a Washington Post analysis. The analysis included only Harvard’s NCAA championship sports, plus women’s rugby, which is one of the NCAA’s emerging sports meant to provide opportunities to women. Harvard has several other programs, such as squash and sailing, meaning the uncertainty reaches even further.
Wall Street Journal: Harvard’s China Ties Become New Front in Battle With Trump
Wall Street Journal [6/8/2025 12:02 AM, James T. Areddy, 646K] reports in his war with Harvard, President Trump has sought to withhold billions of dollars in federal funding from the school and strip its tax exemptions, measures the White House initially tied to perceived antisemitism at the school amid Israel’s war in Gaza. In recent weeks, long-simmering Republican anger over Harvard’s links to China has increasingly gained traction. In escalating calls to punish the school, a training event two years ago in the Chinese city of Kunming has emerged as Exhibit A. The training, on the bland topic of healthcare financing, was co-hosted by a Harvard professor and involved a few dozen provincial-level bureaucrats. Among them was at least one representative from Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, a large Chinese Communist Party paramilitary organization in the country’s far west that also handles civilian government services, including managing hospitals. U.S. authorities in 2020 imposed sanctions against the Xinjiang corps, accusing it of ethnic and religious abuses against Uyghurs and other mostly Muslim minorities and forbidding U.S. persons from providing it “funds, goods, or services.” On Wednesday, as Trump moved to bar Harvard from enrolling foreign students, his order cited the event, charging that in exchange for Chinese funding the school “has, among other things, ‘repeatedly hosted and trained members of a Chinese Communist Party paramilitary organization.’ “ Harvard, which didn’t respond to questions, hasn’t publicly addressed the allegations involving the Xinjiang corps. The school is fighting Trump in court, calling some of the administration’s measures illegal. Last month the report found an audience with Sen. Tom Cotton (R., Ark.), who cited Strategy Risks in an open letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that urged an investigation into Harvard’s potentially “prohibited behavior” with the Xinjiang organization. Four days later, Moolenaar and his fellow House members sent their letter to Harvard’s Garber, noting the Xinjiang organization’s role in mass detentions and describing healthcare efforts in Xinjiang as a “fig leaf” to whitewash crimes. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem then called out the training as she moved to strip Harvard of its right to educate foreign students. Harvard’s public materials on the meetings don’t say how the corps came to participate in the training, an iteration of a series on healthcare finance basics known as the Flagship Program developed by the World Bank and Harvard in the 1990s. It has been offered to bureaucrats in dozens of low- and middle-income nations; the 2023 version in China had a special focus on eldercare insurance.
The Hill: Democrats itching for fight over immigration
The Hill [6/7/2025 12:00 PM, Mike Lillis, 18649K] reports Democrats are diving forcefully into the immigration fight, dismissing concerns about political backlash to confront President Trump directly on a polarizing issue that ranks among the president’s strongest suits in the eyes of voters. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) is leading the charge. Not only has he waged an animated defense of Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.), who is facing federal charges following a recent scuffle with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents outside a migrant detention center in New Jersey, but he’s also demanding that the masked ICE officers involved in the fracas — and Trump’s broader mass deportation campaign — be publicly identified. The call drew immediate howls from officials with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other Republicans, who have long-accused Democrats of siding with people in the country illegally over the rule of law — a major theme of Trump’s successful campaign last year. Many of the GOP critics are accusing Democrats of putting the safety of federal law enforcement officers in jeopardy.
The Guardian: Kristi Noem: the made-for-TV official executing Trump’s mass deportations
The Guardian [6/7/2025 8:00 AM, Lauren Gambino, 8300K] reports little more than a year ago, Kristi Noem’s political prospects appeared to be in freefall. The then South Dakota governor was criss-crossing the country on an ill-fated book tour, widely seen, at least initially, as an audition to be Donald Trump’s running mate. Instead, Noem found herself on the defensive – a position Trump never likes to be in – after revealing in her memoir that she had shot the family’s “untrainable” hunting dog, a 14-month-old wirehair pointer named Cricket. Even in Trumpworld, where controversy can be a form of currency, the disclosure shocked. In the weeks that followed, she faded from contention and the breathless veepstakes rumor mill moved on. By the time Trump selected JD Vance as his vice-presidential nominee, Noem’s path forward on the national stage was unclear. But a year is a lifetime in politics, the saying goes. It is even more true today, in Trump’s warp-speed Washington, where Noem now leads the sprawling department at the heart of the president’s hardline vision to carry out the largest deportation campaign in American history. Since assuming office as the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in January, Noem has played a starring role in the second Trump administration, executing the White House’s immigration agenda with fierce loyalty, Trumpian defiance and a made-for-TV approach that supporters have hailed as a full-throttle push to “Make America Safe Again” and critics have condemned as theatrical posturing with cruel – and possibly unlawful – consequences. The department oversees a vast portfolio, with a workforce of 260,000 people spread across 22 federal agencies, including the Secret Service, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) and the nation’s premier cybersecurity agency. Yet immigration has dominated her tenure. In her first days in office, Noem, 53, revoked several Biden-era programs and policies – among them initiatives crafted in response to a global rise in migration that brought record numbers of people to the US-Mexico border and helped seed the political ground for Trump’s comeback in 2024. She has also deputized personnel from across federal agencies and enlisted local law enforcement to expand the administration’s deportation operations. And she has been front and center in many of the administration’s most closely watched legal clashes, including in the case of a Maryland man mistakenly deported to a prison in El Salvador. On Friday, in a stunning reversal by the administration, he was returned to the US, where he now faces criminal charges. DHS maintains that under Noem’s stewardship, the department has returned to its “core mission of securing the homeland”. “The world is hearing our message,” said DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin, pointing to record-low border crossings since Trump took office. “Thanks to President Trump and Secretary Noem, we have the most secure border in history.” But critics say her approach is a striking departure from the way past secretaries have led the department.
Opinion – Op-Eds
Washington Examiner: The Supreme Court must rein in Biden’s open borders judges
Washington Examiner [6/8/2025 12:01 AM, Staff, 1934K] reports that, after then-President Joe Biden engineered the largest illegal immigrant invasion in our nation’s history, voters soundly rejected the Democratic Party’s open borders policies. They chose to embrace the order and security of President Donald Trump’s vision of a secure border crossed only by those whom Americans wished to let in. Now that Trump is lawfully deporting illegal immigrants as promised, radical judges are abusing their authority to prevent deportations as much as possible. The Supreme Court must take one of these cases and make an example of activist lower courts that are abusing their legal authority, thwarting the democratic will, and endangering the lives of innocent American citizens. On June 1, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, an illegal immigrant who was allowed into the United States by Biden and then stayed after his visa expired, shouted, "Free Palestine," while using a makeshift flamethrower and Molotov cocktails to burn eight peaceful Americans who were holding a vigil for the Jewish victims of Hamas’s brutal Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack. He has since been arrested and charged with 42 crimes, including attempted murder. Soliman was granted entry into the U.S. on a tourist visa by the Biden administration in August 2022. To get this, Soliman would have had to swear under oath that his visit to the U.S. was temporary and he had no intention of staying. He manifestly broke that oath when he applied for asylum shortly after arriving. Despite his obvious subterfuge, not only did Biden’s officials make no effort to deport him, but they also gave him a work permit. When Soliman’s tourist visa expired, giving him no legal basis to be in the country, the Biden administration made no effort to deport him. Soliman did not come to the country alone. He traveled with his wife and five children. All of them were on identical tourist visas granted at the same time, and all of them expired at the same time. Every single one of them is an illegal immigrant, just like Soliman. Nevertheless, Soliman’s wife is fighting her deportation to Egypt, where she is a citizen. The family said their constitutional rights are being violated and that they are being punished for someone else’s crimes (that someone else being their husband and father). A Biden-appointed federal judge agreed with these specious claims and issued a restraining order preventing the Trump administration from deporting the family to Egypt. The order is completely unfounded and contrary to the law. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit should act swiftly to remove the restraining order, and the Supreme Court should take one of these cases soon to send a message to federal judges that political interference with the enforcement of immigration law will not be tolerated.
Washington Examiner: Democrats’ Abrego Garcia blunder could haunt the party for years
Washington Examiner [6/7/2025 2:26 PM, Peter Laffin, 1934K] reports the most debilitating symptom of Trump Derangement Syndrome is impaired political judgment. Something about President Donald Trump’s presence and popularity, and perhaps even his very existence, causes his opponents to malfunction and self-destruct. Perfectly intelligent people become like cats chasing laser pointers into walls. Seasoned politicians and operatives misread easy cues and miss wide-open lay-ups. Allies credit Trump’s success in 10 years of politics to a Midas touch, but it’s more about his opponents having the opposite. The Democratic beatification of Kilmar Abrego Garcia stands to go down as an historic American political blunder. The illegal immigrant and MS-13 gangbanger "accidentally" deported to his native El Salvador did not become a martyr randomly — he was purposefully chosen by Democrats and their legacy media machine to highlight the supposed evil of Trump’s deportation efforts. He was famously dubbed the "Maryland man" and cast as a loving father and husband and a model citizen despite evidence to the contrary.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement
New York Times: Trump Targets Workplaces as Immigration Crackdown Widens
New York Times [6/7/2025 8:22 PM, Lydia DePillis and Ernesto Londoño, 138952K] reports the chaos that engulfed Los Angeles on Saturday began a day earlier when camouflage-clad federal agents rolled through the garment district in search of workers who they suspected of being undocumented immigrants. They were met with protesters, who chanted and threw eggs before being dispersed with pepper spray and nonlethal bullets. The enforcement operation turned into one of the most volatile scenes of President Trump’s immigration crackdown so far, but it was not an isolated incident. Last week, at a student housing complex under construction in Tallahassee, Fla., masked immigration agents loaded dozens of migrants into buses headed to detention centers. In New Orleans, 15 people working on a flood control project were detained. And raids in San Diego and Massachusetts — in Martha’s Vineyard and the Berkshires — led to standoffs in recent days as bystanders angrily confronted federal agents who were taking workers into custody. The high-profile raids appeared to mark a new phase of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, in which officials say they will increasingly focus on workplaces — taking aim at the reason millions of people have illegally crossed the border for decades. That is an expansion from plans early in the administration to prioritize detaining hardened criminals and later to focus on hundreds of international students. “You’re going to see more work site enforcement than you’ve ever seen in the history of this nation,” Thomas D. Homan, the White House border czar told reporters recently. “We’re going to flood the zone.” It remains to be seen how aggressively Mr. Trump will pursue sectors like construction, food production and hospitality. Raids are sometimes directed based on tips, but otherwise appear to be distributed without a clear pattern, hitting establishments large and small. A spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security did not respond to an email seeking details about the government’s plans, including an explanation about why the administration is ramping up work-site arrests now. Over the past month, though, the White House has pressured immigration officials to increase deportations, which have fallen short of the administration’s goals. The number of arrests has risen sharply in the past week, according to figures provided by the Department of Homeland Security. Tricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for Homeland Security, said 2,000 immigrants per day were arrested over the last week, up from 600 earlier in the administration. It was not clear how many of those arrests were made at raids of work sites.
Politico: ‘A complete sea change’: Trump’s immigration crackdown goes into hyperdrive
Politico [6/7/2025 7:00 AM, Ali Bianco, 2100K] reports it’s been a huge week for President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown. The Trump administration released a flurry of executive orders and instituted mass arrests across the country that changed the immigration landscape, sometimes in a single day. Thousands of immigrants, through one mechanism or another, have lost the ability to reside legally in the U.S. or have been blocked from getting the chance. It’s the kind of blitz the White House has described as operating on “Trump speed” — and it was on full blast this week, even as Trump’s public blowup with his one-time ally Elon Musk grabbed all the headlines. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reported a wave of arrests, with the agency on Wednesday detaining over 2,200 people — which a senior DHS official, who was granted anonymity to disclose the data, said was the largest single-day arrest total in agency history, only to be topped by over 2,300 on Thursday in a cross-country spree. ICE has also re-arrested immigrants already in the removal process but not actively in detention and has gone after immigrants at their courtroom hearings and check-ins, a departure from the first Trump administration. The new high comes days after White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller started reportedly calling for at least 3,000 apprehensions a day — a goal that triples what the agency was hitting when Trump took office and one they have yet to reach. The push for bigger deportation sweeps also builds on Trump framing illegal immigration as an “invasion” threatening the country. “We cannot allow the previous administration’s invasion of our country of illegal immigrants to continue,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday. “We just can’t have it.” All signs point to ICE ramping up its officers to get to that number, as more immigration agents are spotted staking out immigration courthouses across the country and as the White House lobbies Congress to pass a mega funding bill that would invest millions more in ICE enforcement.
Washington Post: [MA] An ICE raid disrupts life on Martha’s Vineyard
Washington Post [6/8/2025 5:00 AM, Arelis R. Hernández, 32099K] reports a million-dollar home excavation project has been delayed because workers were too afraid to show up at the construction site. A pool at a vacation inn was closed to guests after the maintenance crew didn’t arrive. And entire businesses on this New England island have shut down. Life on Martha’s Vineyard and the adjacent island of Nantucket has been disrupted since officers arrested dozens of immigrants late last month, igniting fear among undocumented workers who form the backbone of the workforce here just as the busy summer season gets underway. "The money is just going to stop flowing," said a 33-year-old Brazilian man who owns three businesses on the Vineyard and spoke on the condition of anonymity because he has no legal status in the United States. "The U.S. is only losing in pushing us out.” Masked immigration officers wearing bulletproof vests arrived on Coast Guard boats right after the Memorial Day weekend and detained several dozen people on both islands. Federal authorities described the arrests as part of a massive sting across Massachusetts that resulted in nearly 1,500 arrests. On the islands, about 40 people were detained, including an alleged MS-13 gang member and a child sex-offender, according to the ICE field office in Boston. Most had no criminal record and, community members said, were stopped on their way to work. The arrests hit a nerve in a liberal enclave known for welcoming everyone: presidents — former president Barack Obama has an oceanfront property here — LGBTQ+ activists, racial minorities, celebrities and a large cluster of immigrants from Brazil. People checked in on friends and warned them to stay off the roads. Residents staged a protest at the ferry docks where agents were loading up shackled migrants onto boats. One man followed the officers with a camera and heckled them. Acting ICE director Todd Lyons said at a news conference after the arrests that if "sanctuary cities" cooperated with the agency, officers wouldn’t have to "go out to the communities and do this." President Donald Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, meanwhile, vowed to continue staging operations in communities trying to protect undocumented people. "There is no sanctuary for illegal aliens in this country," he said. Brazilians began arriving on Martha’s Vineyard four decades ago as hyperinflation and economic stagnation wrought havoc in their country. Many arrived on tourist or work visas planning to return home but instead found a new one. The newcomers established businesses offering food and cleaning services that are now crucial to daily life in a resort town. Today there are few restaurant menus here that don’t offer Brazilian-inspired options like croquettes or traditional cheesy bread. The hospital posts signs in English, Portuguese and Spanish. The school system employs Portuguese-speaking translators to assist Brazilian families, whose children make up roughly half the student population. Immigrants and lifelong residents on Martha’s Vineyard said the arrests felt arbitrary and included valued community members who had committed no crime. Overstaying a visa is a civil offense. "People here have never seen that," said Ricardo Duarte, a local Brazilian pastor. "ICE would come here to get criminals and that is good. But the way they did it now, that was not it.” Fear spread quickly on the morning of May 27 as officers wearing vests labeled "POLICE" and "ICE" began stopping work vehicles. Migrants were handcuffed, fitted with orange life vests and taken to a Coast Guard boat.
Telemundo: [FL] Cuban man arrested by ICE after attending immigration court in Miami
Telemundo [6/7/2025 6:40 PM, Eduardo "Yusnaby" Rodríguez, 177K] reports Randy Mesa Padron arrived in the United States in February 2022 from Cuba, crossing the border in search of freedom. Upon entry, he received a Form I-220A, an order of release under supervision, and was placed in an electronic shackle that was removed a year later. Since then, he had built a stable life in Miami. He set up a barbershop, worked steadily, and applied for legal residency in the country. His wife, Roxana Peguero, had arrived nine months before him, also from Cuba. When Randy arrived, she was already established in South Florida, and together they started a new stage as a couple. But everything changed this Monday, June 3, when Randy went to his second hearing in immigration court. According to Roxana, the first hearing was postponed due to lack of legal representation. This time, they already had a lawyer. However, she claims that the judge dismissed the case abruptly, without allowing Randy to present his asylum application. Within minutes, ICE agents handcuffed him and detained him inside the building. "He walked into the courtroom with me ... and came out with his hands cuffed. They didn’t even let us talk," said Roxana in tears during an exclusive interview with Telemundo 51. The young woman, who lives in Hialeah, says she is devastated. Well-known immigration attorney Willy Allen, who represents Mesa Padron, confirmed that the legal process to reverse the decision has already begun. "We are going to fight this case. There are legal avenues to reopen it and prevent his deportation," he stated. Randy is currently being held at the immigration detention center in Pompano Beach, while his family fears for his future. Roxana insists that her husband deserves a chance: "He is a good man. He doesn’t deserve this. We just want justice. [Editorial note: consult video at source link]
CBS Austin: [MI] Immigrant rights groups alarmed by ICE’s unexpected detentions in Grand Rapids
CBS Austin [6/7/2025 7:27 PM, Colin Roose, 558K] reports at least six people were arrested by ICE agents this week in Grand Rapids at a place immigrant rights groups are calling unexpected. The arrests happened outside of an Intensive Supervision Appearance Program Center, or ISAP. It’s a place for people with various immigration statuses to check in with agents while waiting for asylum hearings. But some were arrested at their meetings Wednesday, which some local groups call a break in government trust. Members of the GR Rapid Response team livestreamed the arrests on social media. The group was notified through a phone call the ICE agents were there and waited to warn others from entering the building. Volunteer organizer, Jeff Smith, said the ISAP facility called the Grand Rapids Police Department to force the Rapid Response team to leave However, he said those arrested were just following what the government told them to do. "This is the first time we’ve ever encountered where ICE was actually detaining people who showed up for their appointments," Smith said. [Editorial note: consult video at source link]
CBS News: [TX] Gov. Abbott to sign bill into law requiring county jails to work with ICE
CBS News [6/8/2025 5:35 AM, Jack Fink, 51860K] reports Sheriff departments across the state will soon be required to work alongside ICE agents due to a bill that Governor Greg Abbott is expected to sign into law. The law would require jails to check the immigration status of all inmates and those that are in the U.S. illegally will have a hold placed on them by federal officials. Until now, it has been voluntary, and federal records show Ellis, Parker, Rockwall, and Tarrant Counties are already participating in the 287-G agreements. "It’s going to allow all Texas sheriffs and counties within the state that operate a jail or the contract for an operation of a jail to cooperate with our federal partners. To cooperate with ICE, and our focus has primarily been our in-jail model that are already arrested on other charges, we’re just asking them to be able to identify the folks that are there, that are arrested to see if they have ICE warrants, to see if they have any detainers, to see if they have warrants for removal and to participate in that federal database to identify those folks so they are not inadvertently bonded out and released on the streets to commit other offenses and crimes," said Spiller. Democratic State Representative Ramon Romero Jr. of Fort Worth, voted against the bill and calls it unnecessary. "For over two sessions now, we have penalized sheriffs and sheriff officers if they don’t turn someone over to ICE. So we already know there is coordination in county jails with ICE to ensure that those folks are being checked. We know that sheriffs across our state are not letting people go. I voted against it because #1, I don’t think it’s necessary and #2, it gives rise to the idea that people can create a model like Sheriff Arpaio did in Maricopa County in Arizona which allows those officers to go out in the field and act as ICE officers," Romero said. There is also language in the bill that allows the Texas Attorney General to bring action against any sheriff who fails to comply with the proposed law.
NBC News: [AZ] ICE agents mistakenly detain U.S. marshal in Arizona
NBC News [6/7/2025 12:43 PM, Mirna lsharif and Cristian Santana, 44540K] reports a U.S. marshal was mistakenly detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Arizona, officials said Friday. The deputy marshal was briefly detained in the lobby of a federal building in Tucson because he "fit the general description of a subject being sought by ICE," according to a statement from a U.S. Marshals Service spokesperson shared with NBC News on Friday. It is not clear when the incident took place. "The Deputy US Marshal’s identity was quickly confirmed by other law enforcement officers, and he exited the building without incident," said U.S. Marshals Service spokesperson Colleen Grayman. The U.S. Marshals Service did not provide additional details or identify the deputy marshal who was detained. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which ICE operates under, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Earlier this week, ICE agents made the most immigrant arrests in a single day, detaining more than 2,200 people Tuesday, according to a source familiar with the arrests and an ICE spokesperson who confirmed the numbers, as the agency responds to pressure from the White House to rapidly and dramatically increase arrests.
Univision: [CA] What happened in Paramount? Immigration raids cause chaos and new clashes
Univision [6/7/2025 6:31 PM, Staff, 4992K] reports an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid Saturday morning in Paramount sparked protests and clashes between federal agents and protesters, a day after similar raids in different parts of Los Angeles. Early in the morning, dozens of people gathered near the 6400 block of Alondra Boulevard, where the federal action was taking place. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) was called in around 11:00 a.m. after reports of a group blocking traffic. In a statement, the agency clarified that it was not involved in the federal operation and that its intervention was limited to vehicle and crowd control duties. “When the officers arrived, it appeared that federal officers were in the area and members of the public were gathering to protest,” the LASD noted. “ Our involvement was solely to manage traffic and maintain public order.” Tensions rose as the morning progressed. Images captured by Univision 34 show federal agents, with their faces covered, throwing smoke bombs, while protesters responded with similar acts. The scene ended with the agents forming a skirmish line in front of the protesters. U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli confirmed via social media that operations are continuing as planned over the weekend in Los Angeles County, and warned that any attempt to interfere will be considered a crime. “Anyone attempting to obstruct our operations will be arrested and prosecuted,” he stated. Civil rights organizations have expressed concern over the escalation of these actions and fear a negative impact on immigrant communities. Meanwhile, protests are expected to continue if ICE maintains its active presence in the region.

FOX News [6/8/2025 5:34 AM, Landon Mion and Bill Melugin, 46878K] reports federal immigration authorities said some of the migrants arrested in the Los Angeles area last week had criminal histories that included assault and drug offenses. Nearly 45 people were arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Friday alone, as officers swept through several locations, including two Home Depot stores, a store in the fashion district and a doughnut shop, prompting protests that continued through the weekend against immigration enforcement operations in which officers raided businesses to arrest workers. The weeklong tally of migrant arrests in the city surpassed 100. One man has already been sent back to Mexico after being picked up at a Home Depot on Friday morning. During the demonstrations, David Huerta, president of SEIU California, a labor union, was arrested and charged with impeding a federal agent while protesting. At the warehouse in the fashion district, agents executed a search warrant on Friday after a judge found there was probable cause that the employer was using fictitious documents for some of its workers, U.S. Attorney’s Office spokesperson Ciaran McEvoy told The Associated Press. President Donald Trump deployed California National Guard troops to Los Angeles on Saturday after two days of clashes between protesters and federal immigration authorities in riot gear. Federal sources highlighted to Fox News some of last week’s arrests in the Los Angeles area, which included violent and drug offenders.

Business Standard: US ends Temporary Protected Status for Nepal, grants 60-day transition
Business Standard [6/8/2025 4:26 AM, Staff, 12700K] reports the US has terminated the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) provided to Nepal in the wake of the 2015 earthquake, a media report said. A US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) notice on Saturday said TPS would not be extended for Nepal after its expiration on June 24 this year. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said the beneficiaries would be granted a 60-day transition period through August 5, The Himalayan Times reported. Nepal was initially designated for TPS on June 24, 2015, for a period of 18 months, in the wake of the devastating earthquake that resulted in a substantial, but temporary, disruption of living conditions. The DHS had extended the designation on October 26, 2016, for an additional 18-month period and multiple occasions thereafter. "After reviewing country conditions and consulting with appropriate US government agencies, the secretary has determined that Nepal no longer continues to meet the conditions for its designation for TPS. The secretary, therefore, is terminating the TPS designation of Nepal as required by statute," the notice said. According to the DHS, about 12,700 Nepalese nationals have TPS, with over 5,500 having become legal permanent residents of the US.
AP: Will visa delays and border fears keep international fans away from the Club World Cup in the US?
AP [6/8/2025 6:10 AM, Anne M. Peterson, 56000K] reports as the United States readies for the FIFA Club World Cup, concern over such things as international travel, fan safety and even economic uncertainty threaten to diminish enthusiasm for the tournament. The United States will see the arrival of 32 professional club teams from around the globe to 11 cities for the tournament. There’s a $1 billion prize pool. The Club World Cup is considered in many ways to be a dress rehearsal for the big event, the 2026 World Cup to be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. But there seems to be little buzz for the Club World Cup at home or abroad. The expansion of the field from seven to 32 teams has diminished the exclusivity of the event, and ticket sales appear slow. At the same time, the tournament is being played amid reports of foreign tourists being detained and visa processing delays. Chaotic U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activities and President Donald Trump’s travel bans aren’t exactly reassuring international fans, either. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking at a House Committee on Foreign Affairs hearing last month, suggested consular staff could be put on longer shifts and that artificial intelligence could be used to process visas. “We want it to be a success. It’s a priority for the president,” said Rubio.
AP: [AK] Here’s what to know about American Samoans in Alaska who are being prosecuted after trying to vote
AP [6/7/2025 9:26 AM, Mark Thiessen, Becky Bohrer and Gene Johnson, 56000K] reports they were born on U.S. soil, are entitled to U.S. passports and allowed to serve in the U.S. military, but 11 people in a small Alaska town are facing criminal charges after they tried to participate in a fundamental part of American democracy: voting. The defendants, who range in age from their 20s to their 60s, were all born in American Samoa — the only U.S. territory where residents are not automatically granted citizenship at birth. Prosecutors say they falsely claimed American citizenship when registering or trying to vote. The cases are highlighting another side of the debate over exaggerated allegations of voting by noncitizens, as well as what it means to be born on American soil, as President Donald Trump tries to redefine birthright citizenship by ending it for children of people who are in the country illegally.
AP: [AK] A U.S. territory’s colonial history emerges in state disputes over voting and citizenship
AP [6/7/2025 12:49 PM, Mark Thiessen, Becky Bohrer and Gene Johnson, 56000K] reports
Whittier also is the unlikely crossroads of two major currents in American politics: fighting over what it means to be born on U.S. soil and false claims by President Donald Trump and others that noncitizen voter fraud is widespread. In what experts describe as an unprecedented case, Alaska prosecutors are pursuing felony charges against 11 residents of Whittier, most of them related to one another, saying they falsely claimed U.S. citizenship when registering or trying to vote. The defendants were all born in American Samoa, an island cluster in the South Pacific roughly halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand. It’s the only U.S. territory where residents are not automatically granted citizenship by virtue of having been born on American soil, as the Constitution dictates. Instead, by a quirk of geopolitical history, they are considered “U.S. nationals” — a distinction that gives them certain rights and obligations while denying them others. American Samoans are entitled to U.S. passports and can serve in the military. Men must register for the Selective Service. They can vote in local elections in American Samoa but cannot hold public office in the U.S. or participate in most U.S. elections. Those who wish to become citizens can do so, but the process costs hundreds of dollars and can be cumbersome. The status has created confusion in other states, as well.
AP: [Afghanistan] The Taliban leader slams Trump’s travel ban on Afghans and calls the US an ‘oppressor’
AP [6/7/2025 8:42 AM, Staff, 56000K] reports the top Taliban leader on Saturday slammed President Trump’s travel ban on Afghans, calling the United States an oppressor, as Afghanistan’s rulers seek greater engagement with the international community. The comments from Hibatullah Akhundzada marked the first public reaction from the Taliban since the Trump administration in recent days moved to bar citizens from 12 countries, including Afghanistan, from entering the U.S. Trump’s executive order largely applies to Afghans hoping to resettle in the U.S. permanently, as well as those hoping to go to America temporarily, including for university studies. In a 45-minute audio recording shared by Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid on X, Akhundzada denounced the Trump administration for imposing "restrictions on people." "Citizens from 12 countries are barred from entering their land — and Afghans are not allowed either," he said. "Why? Because they claim the Afghan government has no control over its people and that people are leaving the country. So, oppressor! Is this what you call friendship with humanity?" He blamed the U.S. for the deaths of Palestinian women and children in Gaza, linking this allegation to the travel ban. "You are committing acts that are beyond tolerance," he added. The Trump administration says the measure is meant to protect U.S. citizens from "aliens who intend to commit terrorist attacks, threaten our national security, espouse hateful ideology, or otherwise exploit the immigration laws for malevolent purposes.".

USA Today: Illegal border crossings at record lows as crackdown spreads
USA Today [6/8/2025 5:02 AM, Trevor Hughes and Lauren Villagran, 75552K] reports the U.S.-Mexico border used to buzz with illegal migration at a scale President Donald Trump called an "invasion." Now soldiers surveil the desert from military vehicles, Border Patrol radios are silent and illegal crossings have fallen to record lows. Reaching far beyond the border, deep into the country’s heartland, Trump insists America is under "invasion" and has continued to invoke wartime powers to stop it. He has transformed the borderland into a military base, made arrests by masked agents a common sight in America and packed detention centers with immigrants, the vast majority without criminal records. Trump’s aggressive actions – and protestors’ increasingly violent opposition – have touched off a furious national debate about civil rights, the rule of law and what the word "invasion" really means. Trump is known for his verbal flourishes, but declaring an "invasion" in numerous executive actions is one way to unlock extraordinary federal authorities, often reserved for wartime, said Jessica Vaughan, of the right-leaning Center for Immigration Studies. "It was not just meant to rile people up, or to just be used as a melodramatic description, but it was meant to trigger a certain response under certain authorities," she said. From immigration raids at construction sites in Florida, dairy farms in Vermont and restaurants in California; to the detentions of college students in Massachusetts and targeting of alleged gang members in Colorado apartment complexes, the Trump administration is sending a firm message to millions of immigrants: You aren’t welcome here.
Washington Examiner: [AR] Escaped inmate ‘Devil in the Ozarks’ found after long manhunt for convicted murderer, rapist
Washington Examiner [6/7/2025 12:54 PM, Ross O’Keefe, 1934K] reports Grant Hardin, an escaped Arkansas inmate known as the "Devil in the Ozarks," has been taken into custody, the Izard County Sheriff’s Office said Friday. Hardin is a convicted murderer and rapist. He was reported missing from prison on May 25. "Hardin was taken into custody by Izard County authorities just a short distance from the North Central Unit in Calico Rock," the Stone County Sheriff’s Office said via Facebook. "While many details will remain under investigation there is no longer an active threat to public safety.". The Arkansas Department of Corrections said Hardin managed to escape by impersonating a law enforcement official. He passed off as one "in dress and manner, causing the corrections officer operating a secure gate to open the gate and allow Inmate Hardin to walk away from the North Central Unit," a probable cause affidavit obtained by Nexstar’s KNWA said. Board of Corrections member Benny Magness said Hardin was captured about a mile from the unit in the woods with the help of a specialized border patrol unit. Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R-AR) said Arkansans can be relieved that he’s caught. "Thanks to the great work of local, state and federal law enforcement Arkansans can breathe a sigh of relief and I can confirm that violent criminal Grant Hardin is back in custody," Sanders said. "I am grateful for all law enforcement who contributed to his capture and give special thanks to the Trump administration and Secretary Kristi Noem, who sent a team from Border Patrol that was instrumental in tracking and apprehending Hardin."
FOX News: [AZ] 17 illegal migrants discovered crammed in RV, sedan in sweltering Arizona heat
FOX News [6/7/2025 8:13 AM, Michael Dorgan, 46878K] reports a man has been arrested and charged with human smuggling after 17 illegal migrants were found crammed inside an RV and a nearby sedan in the sweltering Arizona heat Wednesday. The majority of the illegal migrants, who are all from Mexico, were found packed inside the cramped RV which was parked on a property in Nogales as temperatures inside soared under the summer sun, according to Sean L. McGoffin, chief patrol agent of Border Patrol’s Tucson Sector. Those inside the RV, including a minor, had limited space and ventilation with no access to running water, McGoffin said. The rest of the migrants were wedged into a small sedan that was discovered during a vehicle stop. All the migrants are now safe, in custody and will be processed accordingly, McCoffin said. The rescued individuals are being processed for expedited removal in accordance with U.S. immigration law. The man who was arrested is a U.S. citizen and initially attempted to flee the scene on foot but was apprehended by agents shortly after. Investigators are working to determine whether others were involved. The operation was carried out by Nogales Border Patrol, Nogales Police and Homeland Security Investigations.
Washington Post: [WA] Manhunt expands for Washington dad accused of killing his three daughters
Washington Post [6/7/2025 8:37 AM, Vivian Ho, 32099K] reports Washington state Gov. Bob Ferguson has ordered National Guard resources to assist in the manhunt for a father suspected of killing his three young daughters and leaving their bodies near a campsite in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Authorities have been searching for 32-year-old Travis Caleb Decker since discovering the bodies of his daughters — 5-year-old Olivia, 8-year-old Evelyn and 9-year-old Paityn — near his abandoned pickup truck on Monday. Ferguson said late Friday that the state is providing helicopter transportation for law enforcement officers as they comb through remote areas in their search for Decker. More than 100 officers, agents and deputies are engaged in the search, the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office said Friday, with more than 500 tips from the public. Federal authorities including the FBI, U.S. Border Patrol, the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Marshals Service are aiding in the search, according to the sheriff’s office.

USA Today: Costco cards good for ‘hot dogs & rotisserie chickens,’ not airports, TSA says
USA Today [6/7/2025 1:33 PM, Jonathan Limehouse, 75552K] reports Costco memberships come with a variety of perks, including access to discounted products and services; however, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently debunked the rumor that customers’ warehouse club cards substitute for a Real ID. TSA proclaimed in an X post on Wednesday, June 4: "We love hotdogs & rotisserie chickens as much as the next person but please stop telling people their Costco card counts as a REAL ID because it absolutely does not.". TSA Pacific spokesperson Lorie Dankers told SFGate that the rumor of Costco cards being accepted as official identification pops up every year or so. When people try to use their warehouse club cards at airports, for instance, it could lead to delays and travel headaches, she added. As of May 7, travelers need a Real ID or other acceptable identification for domestic flights and accessing federal facilities. Those who haven’t gotten one yet may be scrambling to figure out what they need to do before booking their next trip. One thing is for certain: They should probably leave their Costco membership cards at home.
Federal Emergency Management Agency
Washington Post: As disasters loom, emergency managers say they aren’t counting on FEMA
Washington Post [6/8/2025 6:00 PM, Scott Dance and Brady Dennis, 32099K] reports preparation for the unknown was always in Alan Harris’s job description as emergency manager for Seminole County, Florida, where thousands of homes suffered flood damage during Hurricane Ian in 2022. But as hurricane season begins this year, there is a fresh layer of uncertainty to contend with. The Trump administration has declared a desire to reshape a federal disaster response system widely considered to be too complicated and winding, and has already taken steps to upend it. Hundreds of Federal Emergency Management Agency veterans have left the agency, and those who remain will no longer go door to door in search of disaster victims who need financial aid, according to a memo obtained by The Washington Post. Administration leaders have floated other changes that could make it more difficult for storm- or fire-stricken communities to qualify for public assistance in the months and years ahead. After recent storms, states have waited weeks or months for President Donald Trump to approve requests for federal disaster assistance, far longer than usual. The changes are casting doubt on what sort of assistance the nation’s emergency managers can expect from FEMA — and whether it will be able to handle the hurricanes, wildfires and tornadoes that are likely in the coming weeks and months. Some experts say they even see signs the agency risks repeating mistakes that marred the response to Hurricane Katrina and other disasters. For months, Trump has been explicit that he expects state and local officials to shoulder more of the burden of disaster response, even though it remains unclear exactly what that looks like in practice. Officials at the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees FEMA, said their goal is to transform a FEMA known for “bloated, D.C.-centric dead weight” into “a lean, deployable disaster force that empowers state actors to provide relief for their citizens.” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi L. Noem has described plans to “eliminate FEMA as it exists today” and shift more control to states. But emergency managers say it’s not clear what that will mean for them. States have already been the ones to take the lead and guide FEMA assistance, they say.
ABC News: Severe storms threaten millions in South from Texas to Carolinas
ABC News [6/7/2025 5:13 PM, Daniel Peck, 31733K] reports multiple rounds of severe weather are targeting a large swath of the South this weekend. More than 40 million Americans are in the threat zone through Saturday night, stretching from Texas to the Carolinas. Damaging wind gusts, large hail and isolated tornadoes are possible with any severe thunderstorms that move through. Earlier Saturday, torrential rain slammed parts of Arkansas, including the Little Rock metro triggering flash flooding. A line of severe thunderstorms is sweeping across parts of the Southeast this afternoon bringing strong wind gusts and several reports of wind damage in northern Mississippi and Alabama. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect across several states, including Birmingham, Alabama, and Atlanta into the evening hours. On Sunday, many of the same areas impacted by storms over the past 24 hours will be in the severe weather threat zone once again. Damaging wind gusts, large hail and isolated tornadoes are also possible then.
USA Today: Severe weather in weekend forecast: See the map
USA Today [6/7/2025 9:53 AM, Jeanine Santucci, 75552K] reports damaging winds along with a chance of hail and tornadoes are threatening states across the Southeast as a large swath of the country braces for severe weather for the rest of the weekend, forecasters said. Over 1.5 million people were under tornado watches in Arkansas the morning of June 7. States in the Southern Plains region to the Carolinas are at risk for clusters of strong to severe thunderstorms moving rapidly, the Storm Prediction Center said. The storms will progress eastward throughout the day. Heavy rainfall is also expected to pose a risk of flash flooding in some of the areas affected by storms, particularly across the mid-South and another cluster of states in New England, the National Weather Service said on June 7. The multi-day severe weather event could impact over 100 million people in total east of the Rockies through the weekend, AccuWeather reported. Major cities in the storm paths include Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Oklahoma City, according to the outlet. Earlier in the week, east 20 tornadoes ripped through New Mexico into the Texas border town of Lubbock, leaving more than 10,000 residents in West Texas without power, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, part of the USA TODAY network, reported. Forecasters said bad weather could cause even more damage on June 8, when widespread storms are expected again across the Southern Plains.
Los Angeles Times: [CA] An earthquake just off California’s coast poses dire tsunami risk for many communities
Los Angeles Times [6/8/2025 6:00 AM, Rong-Gong Lin II and Grace Toohey, 14672K] reports California does not often experience dangerous tsunamis, but there is one type of ocean surge some experts are increasingly concerned about. Near-shore tsunamis — those triggered by earthquakes just offshore — could pose a particularly dire risk for California’s heavily populated coastal communities, according to experts, disaster modeling and local hazard plans. Depending on the strength and location of the quake, life-threatening waves could approach the coastline in as few as 10 minutes, perhaps not even enough time for an emergency alert to be issued, much less arrive on your cellphone. And it’s a potential threat all along California’s 840-mile coast, from the dense cities in the south to more remote reaches in the north. Data published in both the city and county of Los Angeles’ hazard mitigation plans show how locally generated tsunamis could reach heights of up to 5 feet above the mean sea level in Marina del Rey; 7 feet in Manhattan Beach and San Pedro; 8 feet in Long Beach and the Santa Monica Pier; 9 feet in Malibu; and 30 feet on Catalina Island — depending on the fault that ruptures or where an underwater landslide is triggered. In Orange County, a magnitude 6.8 quake just offshore could bring a local-source tsunami to the coast in as little as 15 minutes, county documents say. A quake-triggered submarine landslide could inundate areas in Newport Beach — including Balboa Island, Balboa Peninsula and Lido Isle — and potentially surge so far inland up San Diego Creek that water approaches the 405 Freeway in Irvine. And in the San Francisco Bay Area, near-shore tsunami could cause waves to surge 4 feet above mean sea level at San Francisco’s Aquatic Park, Alcatraz Island, Redwood City and Richmond; 5 feet in Alameda; 6 feet at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach; 7 feet in Sausalito; 8 feet in Pacifica in San Mateo County; and 9 feet in Bolinas in Marin County, according to the California Geological Survey. Reginald Harrison, director of disaster preparedness and emergency communications for the city of Long Beach, said “tsunamis are a rare but real threat to our community.”

Washington Post: White House security staff warned Musk’s Starlink is a security risk
Washington Post [6/7/2025 7:00 AM, Joseph Menn, 32099K] reports Elon Musk’s team at the U.S. DOGE Service and allies in the Trump administration ignored White House communications experts worried about potential security breaches when DOGE personnel installed Musk’s Starlink internet service in the complex this year, three people familiar with the matter told The Washington Post. The people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive issues, said those who were managing White House communications systems were not informed in advance when DOGE representatives went to the roof of the adjacent Eisenhower Executive Office Building in February to install a terminal connecting users in the complex to Starlink satellites, which are owned by Musk’s private SpaceX rocket company. The people said those managing the systems weren’t able to monitor such connections to stop sensitive information from leaving the complex or hackers from breaking in. It could not be verified whether the rooftop terminal remains installed or if anything would change now that Musk has receded from the government. The White House referred questions to the U.S. Secret Service, which said it could not discuss specific technology systems for security reasons. "We were aware of DOGE’s intentions to improve internet access on the campus and did not consider this matter a security incident or security breach," Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

USA Today: [MI] 2 in custody after loaded, high-capacity weapons found outside graduation, sheriff says
USA Today [6/7/2025 12:52 PM, Lily Altavena, 75552K] reports two people are in custody after sheriff’s deputies in Michigan found loaded, high-capacity weapons in the parking lot of a high school graduation as a brawl unfolded on June 3. The weapons found include what Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard described as an AR-style pistol and a Glock semi-automatic handgun. Both were loaded with 40-round magazines, including a drum and an extended stick, Bouchard said. The guns were not registered. Officials "probably prevented a mass shooting" in Pontiac, Bouchard said in a June 6 news conference. Sheriff’s deputies were originally called out after reports of a brawl breaking out, but were told by an individual at the event that rumors of threats about a possible shooting were circulating on social media, according to Bouchard. Two people, ages 19 and 20, have been taken into custody, officials said. Neither was a graduating student but had disputes with others at the Arts and Technology Academy of Pontiac, which had its graduation on June 3, at the United Wholesale Mortgage sports complex. The motive behind the incident wasn’t clear, Bouchard said.
New York Times: [WA] Teenager’s Bombing and Mass Shooting Plot at a Mall Is Foiled, F.B.I. Says
New York Times [6/7/2025 2:29 PM, Adeel Hassan, 138952K] reports a teenager in Oregon planned to set off an explosive at a shopping mall in Washington State and shoot people as they fled the movie theater there, said law enforcement officials, one of whom said the plot “was as serious as it gets.” The teenager, who is from Columbia County, Ore., and whose name and precise age were not released, was arrested on May 22 by deputies from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, according to the F.B.I. Officials in the F.B.I.’s Portland, Ore., office said the attack was planned for the Three Rivers Crossing mall in Kelso, Wash., which is about 50 miles north of Portland. Representatives of the mall could not be immediately reached for comment on Saturday. The detailed and imminent attack plans were reported to the F.B.I. on May 19, officials said at a news conference in Portland on Thursday. The agency worked with the local police to identify the suspect the next day. Doug Olson, the special agent in charge at the Portland office of the F.B.I., did not disclose who tipped off the authorities, saying only that “if you see something, say something.” The teenager was placed under court-authorized surveillance, and a federal search warrant was executed at his home on May 22. The authorities seized three handguns, boxes of ammunition, four knives and five digital devices, Mr. Olson said. “This plot was as serious as it gets,” Mr. Olson said. “We, along with our partners, moved swiftly to interrupt this violent plan and to protect our community.” The teenager faces state charges, which were not specified. It was unclear on Saturday whether he had a lawyer.

Daily Caller: [Ukraine] Ukraine’s Covert Drone Strike Marks Dire Warning For US
Daily Caller [6/7/2025 4:21 PM, Wallace White, 1010K] reports the U.S. is vulnerable to an attack similar to Ukraine’s Sunday surprise drone strikes inside Russian territory, defense experts told the Daily Caller News Foundation. Ukraine covertly transported containers full of drones deep into Russia over the course of several months, hammering a large portion of Russia’s strategic assets such as bombers and airbases when the drones were activated to attack on June 1. While the U.S. evaluated the consequences of the attack on future peace prospects, America is largely unprepared to defend against the possibility that an adversary could unleash a similar covert drone attack against key assets situated on American soil in the future, national security experts explained to the DCNF. "We don’t have a good counter-drone system protecting key U.S. infrastructure or military assets," Jennifer Kavanaugh, director of military analysis at Defense Priorities, told the DCNF. "Obviously, the military is working on it. They’re very aware of this gap. They’ve been studying it for a number of years, and there are some systems, so I don’t want to imply there’s nothing." Ukraine has the advantage of a large land border with Russia, which allowed them to set up the drones months in advance undercover. While the U.S. does not share a land border with any direct geopolitical adversary, a similar attack could still happen due to the high cost of policing smuggling into ports of entry and potential insider threats. "It’s definitely feasible. It’s definitely possible," Kavanaugh told the DCNF. "It’s definitely something the U.S. should be thinking about. It’s very difficult to counter. You never have borders that are 100% secure. You can never guard 100% against things being smuggled in. It’s just too hard, especially when the things being smuggled are small and the cost that would be incurred from trying to go through every container in detail is very high.".
